February 22, 2017: Weird Russia
Soviet synth-driven religious pop, a bedroom project devoted entirely to the 16th century occult language Enochian, Siberian cassette-culture freak outs, a hip-hop album celebrating the lives of alcoholics, and more, from the 1980s to present.

Gary, this looks fantastic. Gonna have to catch most of it in the archives as usual, but this is a great theme for a show. |

My screen name comes from Russia. I'm reading Boris and Arkady Strugatsky right now. Russia is everywhere - we should just embrace our new overlords. |

ill see if i can do it | |

![]() I always bring up 'How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin' as a must-see film. That is not so much about the 1980s of course - but it is a great introduction to Rawk behind the Iron Curtain & how that situation evolved over decades. People cutting flexidiscs on used x-rays for instance: just scoring the music was like scoring dope over here... |
![]() |
![]() Okay -- typically what people do, Murat, is to click on the 128k MP3 and then get that to play in their iTunes ... but the pop up just works automatically |

![]() Another very wide tangent: The Gospels correlate to the four Fixed Signs of the Zodiac - the ones in the middle of each season that focus energy & are used to represent the Four Elements. You'll see them in Art & Architecture as the Man/Angel - Matthew, Bull - Luke, Eagle - John, & Lion - Mark. Matthew here is the Man/Angel correlating to ♒Aquarius: the Gospel of Christ as Fulfillment of Prophecy. |

it occurs to me 1980 was when the soviet unioon was still there --so religious themes are transgressive acts
![]() |
![]() JesusChristSuperstar RawkOpera from a whole different Era & Place. What to compare it to - ScottWalker? Einsturzende Neubauten right here? It's quite interesting! |
![]() |
![]() Yes, Murat! Everything Yuri Moroz did was transgressive, beginning with using State-owned equipment illegally to record his albums |

Murat:
do you mean these songs were recorded in government studios?
Wed. 2/22/17 7:30pm
Murat:
youre answering my question
![]() |
![]() That film I mentioned tells how the Soviet system came around to a 'if you can't beat 'em join 'em' attitude - & decided to press the records for themselves & such - then there were Soviet versions of albums no one in the West got paid for... |
![]() |
![]() I expected to get turned off by the Xian theme - tho' of course I don't understand the Russian anyhow - but that was really impressive & interesting - a Narrative w/ dynamics but not cloying melodrama - & sonically quite varied & effective. Kewl! |
![]() |
![]() Glad you liked it, RevRab! |
![]() |
![]() Of course the socio-political context adds weight & interest too. |

Of course it is completely coincidental I assume, but those gospel recording had some of the feeling of a cecil taylor performance.
