Top o' the morning to everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 9:01am fred:

Good morning Jeffs and non-Jeffs
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:03am Jeff Golick:

Hey-o!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:06am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh wow. Already exciting. Read about Anne Briggs in Mojo & such - she was shy of notoriety but influenced everything - legendary.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:06am Jeff J:

Hey there Fred and other Jeff! This Anne Briggs track feels very Sunday morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:08am listener james from westwood:

G'morning, Jeff, Jeff, and all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 9:09am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:09am Jeff J:

Morning RevRabbit63 and LJFW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:13am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

SandyDenny - Top 10 Singers of any kind. No?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Greets, @Andrew Waterloo.

And yeah, I'm ok with that claim, @RRN63.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:18am Jeff J:

Hey there Andrew Waterloo.
Can't ever go wrong with Sandy Denny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:24am listener james from westwood:

A performance of this song or a close relative to same was one of the most surprisingly sad moments in the show "Deadwood."
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:27am Jeff J:

Apologies if that song was cut down in its prime there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:30am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jefferey Davidson interviewed Shirley Collins in 2014 : wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Ok, there's that Collins end.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:33am Jeff J:

Thanks for that link, RRN63. There's also a nice feature on Collins in the new issue of The Wire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:33am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This BBC On Music about Ewan McColl & his obsession w/ keeping the BritFolk scene 'authentic' is a good 'un for historical background an' stuff : www.bbc.co.uk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:34am Jeff Golick:

Oh dear. This could be a problem. So this show was pre-recorded in order to get both Jeffs together again. I fear that there was a glitch in the uploading process, and we're getting this set break again -- I do believe we'll be back on course after this (bonus!) repeat set break.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:35am Jeff J:

Deja vu all over again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...we'll do the Time Warp again for Halloween...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...honestly - another chance to pay attention :) ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:48am Jeff Golick:

There's a tune on this Duncan Browne album called "Dwarf in a Tree (Cautionary Tale)." Just fyi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 9:51am fred:

D:O with no glitches wouldn't be D:O radio. Double the Jeffs probably means double the technical issues. I'm fine with that
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:52am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for the understanding, @fred! How're you doing?
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:52am Jeff J:

Fred - Double the glitches is probably too true! It's adding some drama to this upcoming set break, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:55am Jeff Golick:

(I'm just hoping the next time we get a repeat section of the show, it'll be music.)
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 9:57am Jason Elbogen:

I'm pretty good at the glitchy radio game myself... At least you started streaming on time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 9:58am Jeff Golick:

Ha. Hey, @Jason. Glitch radio is good radio.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 10:00am Jeff J:

Glitches at no extra charge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:04am doctorjazz:

Hey Jeff Squared and Outsters! What a great set I missed (slept in...). Will have to play it later from the archive. I'm a Richard Thompson junkie, in all his various gigs, but most of the rest of the names are not familiar. Be taking you out with me as usual...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:04am fred:

@Jeff and Jason: I will be cut off from WFMU for at least a month starting next weekend, so my not checking it won't be for lack of interest. No internet access at all for me because I don't have a smartphone or laptop. Next Sunday I'll see my favorite singer, Byambajargal Gombodorj. I actually delayed heart surgery so that I could go to that show, I'm checking into the hospital the next day
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:08am doctorjazz:

best of luck, Fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Delaying heart surgery for a concert is a baller move, @fred. Seriously, though, wishing you all the best - hope it goes well, and will look forward to seeing your red avi gracing these pages come December.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 10:09am Jeff J:

Hi @doctorjazz - thanks! There's more Richard to come, and much more from his colleagues and sometime collaborators on the British scene. Hope some of them catch your fancy.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 10:10am Jeff J:

@Fred - Hope the surgery goes well and you're feeling 100% soon thereafter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:12am fred:

I saw Comus open for Current 93. It did make a lot of sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:15am fred:

@Jeff J: Unlike the station, I'd happily settle for 56%. I hope more people pledge and make sure WFMU is still around when I'm released
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 10:18am Jeff J:

@Fred - Comus opening for Current 93 sounds like a remarkable bill. Did the Comus crew manage to summon the same energy of their first record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:18am Andrew Waterloo:

I always get a bit forlorn when WFMU isn't making its goal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:19am Uncle Michael:

Good morning.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 10:20am Jeff J:

Morning Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:21am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @UM. Speaking of not making its goal, what's the vibe in Cubtown?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:21am Uncle Michael:

Everybody pledge. Do it for Lorne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:22am Uncle Michael:

Resilient. We got Lester on the mound tonight. No quit in him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:23am doctorjazz:

Out on the walk with Ozzie... Man, feels like summer or!
(sorry about your Cubbies, UM, it ain't over until...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:23am Jeff Golick:

Nope. Dude beat cancer, so Indians shouldn't be too hard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:24am fred:

@Jeff: I don't know their records. It was 5 years ago, so maybe the energy wasn't all that high, but I loved their set enough that I have no interest in spoiling that experience by listening to "better" releases. Some people in the audience were saying they really sucked compared to their records, so I decided I'd stick with liking the experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:28am Jeff Golick:

RE PLEDGES: We do not have a way of knowing who may have contributed to D:O Radio in recent days and weeks (or minutes?), so please know you have our undying THANKS, whoever you are. I suspect we'll be able to make proper shout-outs in the coming weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:30am doctorjazz:

"a la mode", so to speak (ouch). All that droning really does give this stuff an "out" feel...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:31am fred:

I still hope the Cubs will win, and retire that stupid curse talk. Also, if Cleveland gets two titles in the same years, the Browns will feel bound to lose every game in OT on a weird play, just to prevent a city-wide identity crisis
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:32am Jeff Golick:

The Browns should be so lucky as to make it to OT once or twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:32am Jeff Golick:

But point taken.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 10:32am Jeff J:

Yes, a big THANK YOU in advance to anyone who pledges during the show. Hugely appreciated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:33am doctorjazz:

If my Jets lost to the Browns, time to find other stuff to do on Sunday's...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:35am doctorjazz:

Fairport!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:37am fred:

@doctorjazz: losing to the Browns might be enough to get them to reconsider their strategy. Like maybe get a quarterback? One they're not putting out while pinching their nose?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:39am doctorjazz:

So nice to hear you both again, double your Jeff's, blast from the past.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:41am doctorjazz:

The Byrds and Dylan had a lot to do with the British electric folk scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & people like Dylan & Paul Simon had gone to England & researched themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:45am doctorjazz:

Masters of War with different lyrics, Dylan must have heard this.
  Sun. 10/30/16 10:45am SeanG:

good stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I get the impression that Davy Graham was the prime Guitarist - even Bert Jansch looked to his example. He came up w/ the DADGAD open tuning that is now standard throughout Irish Trad...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:46am Jeff Golick:

Yah, Dylan in England in 65/66 is like a perfect marriage of source material and galvanizing force - good timing.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 10:47am Jeff J:

Davy Graham was a genius. His album with Shirley Collins was a game changer for the scene. Wish we had more space for his solo material in this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that almost any Guitarist that messes w/ open tunings & drones owes a debt to Davy Graham & his explorations of World Music & Fusions long long before any such terms were a thot in anyone's head...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:47am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @SeanG! And glad you are enjoying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:48am fred:

This Spontaneous Music Ensemble reminds me of the great Julius Eastman piece that deservedly got much airplay lately
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:48am doctorjazz:

@Fred... The Jets have been looking for a quarterback for what, 50 years now? Vinnie Testaverde is the closest they've come...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:48am Jeff Golick:

SME = John Stevens, Trevor Watts, Johnny Dyani, and Maggie Nicols, vox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:52am fred:

@doctorjazz: I can only hope they're protecting Hackenberg while he learns. But what can he learn from Fitz and Geno?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:52am doctorjazz:

Very cool, this SME.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:53am doctorjazz:

You can always learn what NOT to do from the Jets QBs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:55am fred:

@doctorjazz: Sure enough, this is PhD level education right there
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 10:56am Jeff Golick:

You can learn how to run into the rear end of the lineman in front of you, for example.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 10:57am fred:

@Jeff G: that QB is now in Denver, so that wasn't even a low blow
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Here's my mantra: The people (men, mostly [exclusively?]) who run sports teams are just the worst. Almost down to a man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:02am fred:

For the record, I'm a Patriots fan. Because the only time I went to the US was part of a high school exchange program, in Foxboro. That was in '88, so there have been some lean years
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:02am doctorjazz:

Brady came up behind Bledsoe, in New England, so it can be done... (another talented but mistake prone QB)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:05am doctorjazz:

Man, I took off my jacket, kept my flannel shirt on, and I'm overdressed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:07am Brian in UK:

Hello J'z and folks.
This might be of interest.
www.bbc.co.uk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:09am fred:

Full disclosure: I was a Broncos fan before that trip, but I fell in love with New England (it was in late January/early February)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:09am Brian in UK:

@fred good luck with the surgery. I work at Harefield Hospital so have some degree of appreciation of what you are facing. Bypass, valves or other; if I may ask?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:10am Jeff Golick:

I'm a New Englander by birth, so I too have hung with the Patriots. (Too many baseball games via local media to withstand becoming a Mets fan, though.) I had a Russ Francis jersey in junior high, e.g. I rather dislike the new logo ("new") and new Pats fanbase of smug asshats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Good day, @Brian in UK, and ah yes that looks like a lovely program(me). Thanks for the link.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:12am doctorjazz:

Sound is great on my end today.
@Brian, got it yesterday, thanks so much!
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 11:12am Jeff J:

Thanks for that link, @Brian in UK. Looks fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:12am fred:

@Brian: Aortic valve replacement, with some aorta replacement thrown in. Routine for the surgeons, but the recovery time gets longer every time I ask
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:12am Brian in UK:

Was the ISB from their scientology phase?

doc so pleased the post is great between our two countries.
  Sun. 10/30/16 11:13am SeanG:

tuning in from Somerville, Mass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:15am Jeff Golick:

@SeanG: Sweet. Have many friends up in Somerville.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:19am fred:

@Jeff G: I still have and wear that Foxboro Warriors high-school basketball T-shirt I got back then. Even though I never saw one of their games. That exchange stay really left a mark
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:19am Brian in UK:

fred the trick is do what you are told and you will get better quicker. I know that sounds obvious. It is a roller coaster ride but you go in with a positive attitude and you are half way there. Ensure that the pain relief is effective, Temazepam is good but can be trippy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:21am Brian in UK:

No need for the babel fish for the translation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:23am fred:

@Brian: I quit smoking (these patches are making me sick, docs never believe you when they ask how much you smoke), and do these breathing exercises faithfully. Pain relief scares me, maybe more than the surgery itself. A friend got addicted after knee surgery, and it's like taboo
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 11:24am Jeff J:

Meic Stevens representing for the Welsh folk scene in this morning's program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:24am Jeff Golick:

@fred: I've never actually even been to Foxboro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:26am doctorjazz:

To Jets fans, New England is the Evil Empire...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:28am fred:

@Jeff G: I was the only French student that even knew about football. They matched me with a guy who worked at the stadium but only cared about soccer (I don't know anything about it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:28am doctorjazz:

@Fred, the exercise/physical therapy is the key.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Would you call this the British Folk 'Revival' ? It's not just Folk, & not quite FolkRawk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:30am Jeff Golick:

@fred: ha!

@RRN63: I'm bad at labels...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:30am doctorjazz:

The weirdest, and most fun, Richard Thompson album. He played not to far from where I live a few weeks ago. Got to interview him once for a magazine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:31am doctorjazz:

He was really nice...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I love seeing RT. A living treasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:32am doctorjazz:

Amen.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 11:32am Jeff J:

@Doctorjazz - His most underrated solo album. And apparently his poorest selling one too, by a wide margin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Yup. I still treasure the memory of seeing him solo acoustic in the 90s, some kind of music industry gig. I should dig up that cassette...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:34am Jeff Golick:

The essential Danny Thompson on bass for this Jansch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:35am doctorjazz:

I don't think most people knew about itwhen it came out. Sank like a stone. Great version of Ellington's Rockin'in Rhythm on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:35am Jeff Golick:

@Jeff J.: were you at that RT gig, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:35am Brian in UK:

@Jeff J with a name like that, no surprises.

Ever listened to Martin Simpson? He spent some time over your way honing his guitar skills. Does a great version of Louisiana 1927.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:36am fred:

@Jeff G: I understand what you meant by "new" logo. I had a sticker of Pat Patriot in my high-school bedroom (it's still there). Flying Elvis doesn't look as good
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:36am doctorjazz:

He did a great concert at St Anne's in Brooklyn Heights I was at.
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 11:36am Jeff J:

@JeffG - Yes, I was there! It was a daytime show at Irving Plaza, I seem to recall? Seen him a bunch of times, always puts on an excellent show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:38am Brian in UK:

Fred pain relief is such a subjective thing.
It will be tough going WFMUless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:38am doctorjazz:

Saw him at Irving Plaza as well, but it was am electric show (bit of both, actually)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:41am Brian in UK:

My name is Brian. I have never seen Richard Thompson.
His ex-wife Linda's solo album from a couple of years ago was excellent. As good a voice as any female folk singer from these shores.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:42am Jeff Golick:

[all together] "Hi, Brian!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:43am doctorjazz:

Linda is fabulous as well. Had am interesting story, I'd I remember correctly. Lost her voice for a while, was diagnosed as psychosomatic, then turned out to have a real problem that was corrected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:44am fred:

@Brian: It boils down to money: I could have got a smartphone to listen to the station. I sent the money to the station instead, so that someone else can listen. I'm not humblebragging there: I could only afford so much, so I gave 1K to the station and will deal without WFMU for a while. Now please pledge and make sure the station is around for longer than I am
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 11:44am Jeff J:

Linda recorded some great live shows fronting David Thomas's 2 Pale Boys. Maybe someday they will see the light of day. It shows another side of her remarkable singing.

My name is Brian. I have hugged Maddy Prior. (Doug S is aware of this).

Thanks, fred. Humbled.

I hadn't heard they found a physical cause for Linda Thompson's vocal problem! It had been quite a different story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:46am doctorjazz:

Was that Pere Ubu David Thomas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:47am Brian in UK:

I think they might both live down on the South Coast at Brighton.

@fred: you are a prince among men & women.

It was a major misdiagnosis, if my memory serves me well (which it often doesn't... Hey, there's a catchy lyric...)
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 11:48am Jeff J:

@doctorjazz - yes, that David Thomas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:48am doctorjazz:

Our clocks went back one hour last night, so it will get dark soon. Brrrr.

Man, wish I still lived in Park Slope... It was nowhere near as cool when I was there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:51am fred:

@Brian: It came out as calling you out, it's not at all what I intended. I replied and thought I should get in a call for pledges, but lost track of how it would come out as against you. I apologize
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:54am Brian in UK:

fred, no apologies. It did not come out that way over here, my friend. I am into this station for far more than is healthy myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @doctorjazz! I wish I still lived w/o children. HA NO I DON'T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 11:56am Brian in UK:

The Lark Ascending is one of Vaughan Williams most famous pieces, often tops lists of British classical 'hits'.

@Brian - I don't believe so, but I don't recall exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/30/16 12:01pm Jeff Golick:

@Brian in UK: yes, as "Y Tebot Piws"
Avatar Sun. 10/30/16 12:01pm Jeff J:

If you remotely enjoyed this show, you'll dig the Electric Eden book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 12:01pm Brian in UK:

Good work, gents.

Jeff J the 's' in Glenisla is silent.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 12:07pm fred:

I'm so looking forward to the next show I'll be able to hear. Don't get too proficient, I'd be confused without those glitches
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/30/16 12:09pm fred:

@Brian: I don't have a phone at all. I'll be totally out of touch
Sun. 10/30/16 1:23pm John in England:

I missed the show but have just looked through the playlist and noted a disappointing failure to include anything by Nic Jones (best albums: The Noah's Ark Trap (1977), From the Devil to A Stranger (1978), Penguin Eggs (1980).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/3/16 3:31pm Jeff Golick:

Hello, @John. Thanks for stopping by. I confess that Nic Jones is a new name for me. And he doesn't come up in the ELECTRIC EDEN book we were using for a show blueprint. But happy to have new aural avenues to pursue.
