hi folks
  Wed. 9/21/16 7:05pm Jill B.:

Hi Gary, NoDakBob, and all the other faithful Bodegaistas. Voice of Tim is coming in just fine here in Oregon.
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:06pm ndbob:

Hi Melinda, Jill and everyone else
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/21/16 7:07pm Carmichael:

Music is down in the mud. Much more volume.
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:08pm Gary:

Hi James, Carmichael, Doug, Melinda, and Mom! I think I got Tim's voice up to where it should be, but be vigilant, listeners ... vigilant ... lemme know if the music is loud enough now, too
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:08pm Doug Schulkind:

@Carmichael
I think the volume is OK. We are listening to cassettes, which provide many layers of mud.
  Wed. 9/21/16 7:09pm Jill B.:

Music level is perfect!
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:10pm Gary:

Terrific! So thrilled to have Tim here, finally! One of my all-time favorite blogs, and I'm guessing y'all's as well ...
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:12pm Gary:

Tim, where did you find this cassette?
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:14pm tim abdellah:

I picked this up in Morocco when I was living there in 2000-2001.
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:14pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm holding out hope that I'll finally learn how to pronounce Najat Aâtabou! Welcome welcome welcome to the Drummer Stream, honorable Tim Abdellah Fuson!
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:15pm Gary:

I'm just relieved I don't have to pronounce anything for once! :)
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:15pm tim abdellah:

Hiya Doug! I'll do my best to pronounce it right!
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:16pm tim abdellah:

It's great to be on Give The Drummer and Bodega Pop!
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:17pm tim abdellah:

I love everything about this track. The alternating solo vocals, the call/response interplay, the scratchy textures of the viola and voices, the complex heavy rhythms...
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:20pm Doug Schulkind:

The voice is mimicking the viola and vice versa. Same throaty timbre. They are like sisters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/21/16 7:22pm Carmichael:

Yeah, music is better, thanks. I got involved in some actual real honest work for a second and couldn't respond. Won't let it happen again.
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:23pm tim abdellah:

@Doug - absoutely!!
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:23pm Gary:

Tim's note to me about this track: "The Fatna Bent el Houcine track is one of the greatest things ever. But it’s 21:40 in duration. Starts off in a slow 40-beat complicated, heavy rhythmic cycle, moves eventually into 19- and 10-beat sections, ending up in an ecstatic 6/8. It would be a shame to fade or edit it. This is Aita Hasbawiya, from the region of Asfi."
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:24pm Gary:

It is *totally* one of the greatest things ever
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:26pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gary and Tim
You can go until noon (ET) tomorrow, but then you gotta clear the decks for Charlie and Busy Doing Nothing.
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:27pm hyde:

@Doug cool. i am looking forward to the next 16 1/2 hours of the show
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:28pm tim abdellah:

I wish! I have to go to Back To School Night tonight :0
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:31pm hyde:

p.s. i am here but trying to sort out some computer issues, so thanks for the cool sounds to accompany my attempting to figure out why i'm having audio and video distortion issues. if you hear a loud thumping down there in nyc, it's just me banging my head against the wall while i'm trying to replace myriad device drivers
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:35pm Gary:

Hyde! Sorry to hear about the computer travails ... :(
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:36pm tim abdellah:

Moulay Ahmed el Hassani - SLINKY is my adjective of choice for his sound!
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:39pm hyde:

heh, well at least the stream plays ok if i'm not doing much else beside poking around in device manager! streaming video is the real problem. though i'm occasionally getting some weird psychedelic lag if i download a new driver. i'll manage, but i may not be chiming in too much. so let's just say it all sounds great right now if i don't turn up here much. ;)
  Wed. 9/21/16 7:39pm Dean:

I was gonna chime in with a requisite joke -- "Hey, when you gonna play Brand X's second album?" -- when a buddy of mine also listening raptly reports, "holy shit, this guy rides my bus sometimes!" Tim lives in our 'hood. (We know all about Back to School Night.)
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:41pm tim abdellah:

LOL!
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:42pm Gary:

Dean! Yeah, Tim is going to have to run off right after the broadcast ends for Back to School Night, is what I've been informed :)

  Wed. 9/21/16 7:45pm ZOs:

Wow, that Ahmed el Hassani track was great!
Will it be shared on the blog?
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:46pm tim abdellah:

This Noujoum el Haouz track has a different guitar sound - Not as slinky as Moulay Ahmed’s sound. I guess the absence of the flange effect.
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 7:46pm tim abdellah:

I've got some other Hassani on the blog. I'll try and get that album up soon.
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:47pm Gary:

  Wed. 9/21/16 7:55pm Dean:

From the catalog description of Dr. Fuson's dissertation: 2, vii, 620 leaves : ill. ; 28 cm. + 1 sound disc (4 3/4 in.). Doctoral dissertations don't typically come with "1 sound disc."
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 7:56pm Gary:

Dean, we're going to hear from that "1 sound disc" next set ... :)

I once referred to the now defunct blog Holy Warbles as the great Library of Alexandria of online music sharing. Tim's site, Moroccan Tape Stash, is HW's equal in it's bottomless, boundless offerings of sonic wonder and generosity. People talk about the Internet reflecting the very best and the very worst of humanity, and Tim and his marvelous gifts represent the very best of the very best.

I didn't arrange permissions for release when I made these recordings. They were intended for research alone, so I wouldn't feel good about releasing them commercially.

Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 9:14pm northguineahills:

The last dj premium /rupture did for WFMU was 3.5 + hours of an mp3 cdr of Maghrebi club music. (he temporarily quit WFMU to focus on his book).
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 9:15pm northguineahills:

Coincidentally, it was the last time I had enough money to contribute to an WFMU marathon.
  Wed. 9/21/16 9:15pm Dean:

I wonder whether Moroccan copyright law--about which I know precisely nothing--prohibits copying or unauthorized publication even for research. Even if there's a fair use provision similar-ish to US law, wholesale copying of an entire work might risk being an infringement.

I think I can hear your Google Hangouts noises... unless there's a Moroccan instrument that sounds eerily similar. Anyway, great show!!
Avatar    Wed. 9/21/16 9:36pm tim abdellah:

I always OK'd it with musicians ahead of time that I was recording for my research and to help me learn the music. I plan to deposit the recordings in an archive at some point, so other researchers can access the recordings.
Avatar Wed. 9/21/16 9:37pm Gary:

You're right, Quinn -- I had GMail open on both computers, which was making the noise ... just shut it off -- sorry about that. And, hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/21/16 9:37pm coelacanth:

i much prefer this organic music to the synthetic voices i heard around 9. i love this!
