Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:11pm Jeff Golick:

Back self? Ugh: bad self.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:11pm listener jeff:

Gotta stick together
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:14pm chromaphone:

I used to think this was the most heavily covered song ever until I started listening to this show :)
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:15pm Lane Gray:

Craziest Caravan I've heard. God bless the Farina Brothers
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:15pm Stanley:

Ooh, thought we were going with the 'teenage' in the title songs, just then. But hey, no matter. It's good to be listening again.

Hey Uncle M!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:21pm chromaphone:

Who did we lose Lane, Santo? I think I heard mention of that. Didn't the brothers have a huge falling out or something, early on in their career?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:21pm doctorjazz:

HI UM and Drummer Streamers!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:24pm chromaphone:

Nice UM! glad I can hear you better.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:25pm Lane Gray:

Bud Isaacs. The first player to record pedal steel where you can hear the pedals bending the strings (Webb Pierce, "Slowly" 1956>
  Fri. 9/9/16 12:25pm Dean:

Claw Hammer's "Caravan" is ... different.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:26pm doctorjazz:

I do believe it was Ivy Anderson on vocals on Jump for Joy.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:26pm Lane Gray:

I like the Mike Auldridge version off of "8 String Swing"
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:27pm Brian in UK:

@Lane Hello, there are so many steel players that I have no idea of living here; that you take for granted.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

Doc! Dean!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:29pm Lane Gray:

Brian, you have David Hartley. One of only two Steel players on the playlist at my wedding two years ago. The other was Buddy Emmons' recording of the Pachelbel Canon
David is VERY impressive
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:34pm Lane Gray:

This version of Haul Off and Love Me is worth the price of admission
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:35pm Brian in UK:

Buddy I know, David is new.
You might like this steel link. My favourite steel pan player from Trinidad, Robert Greenidge (a good Trini name) playing some improvisation.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:37pm Lane Gray:

One of the two prettiest steels being made today is in Blighty. Dave Wheelhouse makes the Sheffield Steel. Gorgeous wood and beautiful machinery
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:40pm Brian in UK:

Amazing how does that happen. Love the use of Blighty.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:42pm chromaphone:

Love Bud Isaacs music. Sorry to hear of his passing. I have a great comp of his early music somewhere on my computer at home.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:42pm burke:

Love this album!!! Never released on compact disk to my knowledge.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:44pm burke:

It's fun to compare Jim Keltner's drumming on this album to Fleetwood's
  Fri. 9/9/16 12:45pm Dean:

Seems only fair that if Lindsey and Stevie get to name a band after themselves then Mick and John should get to do the same!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Supposed to reach 90°F tomorrow. No tipping point just yet.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:48pm listener james from westwood:

No sign of fall around northern NJ; summery humidity this morning, 90s today and tomorrow. Cannot wait for autumn.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:49pm PMD:

No seasons here, alas
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:50pm chromaphone:

91 and horribly muggy in Boston right now.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:52pm Uncle Michael:

Doug! PMD!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:55pm Parq:

Hi, gang. Hiding out in air conditioning until 7 at least. PMD! Long time no see, champ.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:58pm Brian in UK:

Sandie Shaw original by Chris Andrews or is this the original?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 12:59pm chromaphone:

Not yer stepping stone, I know my rights.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:00pm Roberto:

Seriously, why can't he have his rice?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:02pm Roberto:

Buenos dias Tio Miguel!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:03pm Parq:

Head hurts from the heat, and work is piled up. Can't think of a good pun. Can we take some clever "hand" reference to the animation as read?
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:06pm Dean:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

Lay your aching head on the pile of work.
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:09pm Dean:

I can't figure out whether the image depicts a meatball factory or a canned applause machine.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:10pm listener jeff:

Put something on that pile o' work.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:13pm Uncle Michael:

Just add meat.
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:14pm Dean:

For later consumption, this interview at WCIN with a friend of mine concerning his recent book about his uncle's photography among the hippies of New Mexico:

Well worth the half hour. And the book is lovely, too.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:17pm listener james from westwood:

I needed this energetic cut; copyediting book references right now. A slog.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:18pm Lane Gray:

Cool, Michael
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:20pm chromaphone:

You know UM is chair dancing right now.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:21pm Lane Gray:

Safety features in the dashcam just went active today. It beeps if we get too close to a vehicle in front even in heavy traffic. And it chatters like an angry squirrel if I leave the lane, even to pass.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

oh, wonderful.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:22pm Lane Gray:

My truck is now officially my babysitter
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:23pm Dean:

I was reading about regulation of the Internet of Things when you posted that, @Lane. You need a bumper sticker: BIG BROTHER IS MY CO-PILOT.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:23pm Alex In Illinois:

I can understand why the proximity part is programmed in there, but why the lane changing alarm? Are trucks supposed to stay in the same lane?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:24pm Lane Gray:

We are allowed to change lanes, but the first symptom of highway hypnosis for falling asleep at the wheel is drifting out of the lane
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:24pm Dean:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:25pm Lane Gray:

Like being said. My last co-driver, the one with three wrecks in five weeks, took out somebody's bumper cover by drifting out of his Lane
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

I'd think the turn signal would tell the system you're out of your lane on purpose.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:26pm Lane Gray:

My boss is too cheap for one of the dash cams that integrates with all of the controls, it just sits here in the dash with no inputs other than microphone and two cameras
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:26pm Dean:

I know from experience. I was struck on 5 in Southern California by a truck/trailer that drifted into my lane. My car spun perpendicular to the flow of traffic, conveniently settling directly in front of the truck as it slowed to a stop. I looked out my driver's side window. I could read MACK.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:26pm Lane Gray:

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:27pm Alex In Illinois:

Ahh, I see.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:27pm doctorjazz:

Have to note, this ChuchuSteady is GREAT!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:28pm Lane Gray:

Come to think of it, his other two wrecks also started with Lane excursions. My speech to text keeps capitalizing my name even when I don't mean me
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:28pm Dean:

I was also once t-boned by a nun. Accidents are fun.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:30pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Michael!
Killer show (as always)
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:30pm Lane Gray:

They are positively surreal when they wake you up and you can't see what's going on because you are in the wrong room
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:30pm Alex In Illinois:

If it has a mike input, maybe somehow it can be programmed to accept a voice command to indicate that you are awake before you make a lane change. But that would be for the programmers at the device vendor to figure out.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:31pm Uncle Michael:

Guido! Thank you.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:32pm Lane Gray:

All the music today is great!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:33pm listener jeff:

Sounds like a plan. Here we go!
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:34pm Dean:

Hence the rights The Acoustics were demanding.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:36pm Lane Gray:

I I suspect FedEx might have a problem with me joining the party
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:38pm Rich in Washington:

I just posted psychotropic drug related comments on the wrong shows playlist. Boy are my faces red. And blue. And electric pink. Anybody got something for an acid stomach?
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:38pm Dean:

You can't spell Rolaids without LSD.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

Bryce doesn't mind, Rich.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:39pm Rich in Washington:

I am sure not, but I still backed awkwardly out of the virtual room, then ran.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:40pm Lane Gray:

Fortunately, everything is kind of damp to keep the risk of spreading down
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:41pm Lane Gray:

Another day, another green red and purple Paisley dollar
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

"Give the nice horsey a sugarcube..."
The horse's whinny mutating into an elephant's trumpet just killed me when I was a kid.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:43pm Lane Gray:

Sundowners: somebody wanted to be status quo?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:44pm Jeff Golick:

Nobody captured weird quite like Firesign.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff caught my reference!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:46pm Lane Gray:

I did. Hence the Firesign quote
  Fri. 9/9/16 1:47pm Dean:

Mr. Klein?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

I didn't catch yours, Lane. My bad.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:52pm Lane Gray:

Jeff, I'd say the Goons were S weird as Firesign, but a little different
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:54pm Lane Gray:

Cool Webb cut. Who's on the Table Harp?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:54pm Jeff Golick:

I have had much less exposure to the Goons, @Lane. Something about Firesign highlighted (for my young mind) the almost sinister aspects of "hippie culture." Did the Goons mine similar territory?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:55pm Brian in UK:

@Lane Goons title like I'm Walking Backwards to Christmas Across the Irish Sea. Weird enough.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:55pm Lane Gray:

BTW, I just reread the playlist table. I did not mean to Sundowners sounded like status quo, I meant EIEIO sounded like the status QUO to me
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:57pm listener james from westwood:

Julea's DS&DC is my Friday morning wake the hell up show!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:57pm Brian in UK:

@Jeff the main weirdness was probably Spike Milligan. The others happily jumped in too.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:58pm Lane Gray:

Jeff, there are a couple of internet radio streams of the Goons. They also had some great music.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 1:59pm Brian in UK:

Harry Secombe has a great singing voice.
Peter Sellers did the voices.
Michael Bentines the sets.
That is a very simple run through.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:01pm Jeff Golick:

I had my chance. A few jobs ago I managed BBC Audiobooks publishing in the US. Tried bringing some Goon Show recordings over, but...was not greeted with a lot of enthusiasm.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:02pm Lane Gray:

Max Geldray blew the hell out of the harmonica. Can't forget the Conk
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:02pm Jeff Golick:

The company met a sad end, and now Amazon owns all of the old BBC Radio recordings. Blergh.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:02pm Rich in Washington:

I found a shelf full of Goon Shows on open reel in KBOO's catacomb-like archive dead storage area last night.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:03pm Jeff Golick:

Wow, @Rich. Score.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:03pm Lane Gray:

You lucky man
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:04pm Rich in Washington:

I am hoping they're on the list to be digitized. Also, the original Hitchhiker's Guide was all there. And some Ken Nordine's Word Jazz - I think his 80s shows.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:07pm Jeff Golick:

Sweet set, @UM. Funky stroll.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

I sent Nordine a record to autograph and he went overboard with the inscription. I treasure it.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:07pm Rich in Washington:

the station got a grant (I think) to digitize its tape archive but I think it only applies to content which originated at the station - tons of rare stuff that was sent in by other stations, later sent via ISDN and taped to open reel.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

who knew a stroll could be a pimp walk?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:08pm Rich in Washington:

Ken is great! Someone once gave me his number and suggested I call him but I was too chicken! He's in his 90s now, slowed down considerably but I guess still active.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:10pm Jeff Golick:

pallid/salad is solid.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:11pm Rich in Washington:

Solid potato squalid.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:12pm Lane Gray:

At 14, all of Pimp's Walks are strolls (Pimp, actually Pimpin, is our superannuated pit bull
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:15pm chromaphone:

Weird, I assumed this was a recent recording because of the way it sounded.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:16pm Parq:

Long John! A relatively obscure 70s figure who means a lot to me for reason I won't bore you with.
  Fri. 9/9/16 2:18pm johnk77:

baldry was a talent
and a queenly piece of work
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:18pm chromaphone:

Wow, I also assumed Baldry was black.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:21pm ndbob:

don't think I know this Wade song - a good one
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:21pm Parq:

Remember "English Bob," the character played by Richard Harris in Eastwood's "Unforgiven"? Baldry looked kinda like that.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

not very!
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

Baldry is a lot longer than Harris
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:25pm burke:

That guitar sound is totally psychotic..
  Fri. 9/9/16 2:26pm johnk77:

baldry meant a lot world-wide
not so much lower 48
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:28pm chromaphone:

It must feel weird to be a popsicle.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:29pm Parq:

Hmm. Well, I remember seeing Unforgiven and thinking "Is that Long John Baldry?" Maybe it was just coz Baldry had a very similar black suit when I saw him ca. '72.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:31pm Uncle Michael:

I'm just saying Baldry is really, really tall.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:35pm Roberto:

All right already, I'll vote for him.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:36pm Roberto:

OK turns out he's not on the ballot this cycle, and is unlikely to be at any future date seeing as he died 10 years ago.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:37pm Lane Gray:

I can't wait for this show to resume, but I can't remember if it's Mock the Week or HIGNFY
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:40pm Parq:

Wow, from Baldry to the Nice. You really are playing my 70s today. Got any Sha Na Na coming up?
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:49pm geezerette:

Wow, beautiful Terry Smith!
Hello-Goodbye! I'm too L.A. :(

Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:58pm chromaphone:

Saw Eddie Harris with Scofield in the 90s. It was so amazing. Apparently he did comedy for a while, but I've never heard any recordings.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for being here, everyone...see you next week.
Avatar Fri. 9/9/16 2:59pm burke:
