@Parq: If you want to get upset at humanity in NYC nowadays, get off the Price Street R train stop and just deal with the humanity/tourists. Makes you wish—no pun intended—the real 3 card monty folks were back on the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 1:25pm Parq:

Jake Gould, the East Village is now party central for the recent-college-grad types -- the Bros and Besties, as I call them. Every other business down there is a bar that caters to the college-tee-shirt crowd.

Hey everybody,I feel your pain regarding loss of record stores, landmark historical buildings, diverse local bottom-up underground culture etc,. We lost Tower Records on Sunset Strip and now the Strip itself. Ugly big box "Dwell" style houses are replacing entire neighborhoods as if dropped from U.F.O.s overnight. It's a world wide phenomenon too;got friends in Europe, same there.

  Mon. 5/9/16 1:47pm Dean:

@geezeretee: Book Soup's still there, though, right? Damn, Tower occupied *two* stores on Sunset Strip, the main store to the north and the Classical Annex across the street. I remember meeting Cheap Trick and the Ramones at the main store a billion years ago.

@Michael 98145: Friends in London say the new thing there is houses as deep under earth as they are tall. One floor below street level and several more above. Senseless! Same plan of covering entire plot with house,no setback from street.

Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 1:56pm geezerette:

@Dean: Yep,Book Soup still there and safe for now.
The Last Bookstore in DTLA is good and Alias Books in Atwater Village. Uphill battle but some little victories. Culture's pretty homogenous though. Cherish the bright spots!
  Mon. 5/9/16 1:58pm Dean:

Last Bookstore gets press to this day. I worked in DTLA for some time, but before LB, I believe. Never had a chance to visit it. Downtown has largely improved since I left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:00pm Nate K.:

@Geezerette, bummed to hear this about the Dwell houses. I've always liked LA's architecture.
  Mon. 5/9/16 2:07pm Dean:

Speaking of architecture, it looks like the Hennessey + Ingalls bookstore moved from the west side to east of downtown.
  Mon. 5/9/16 2:10pm herb.nyc:

NYTimes had a Fairway Vs Fancy article, about trend(oid)s in NYC. Ugh.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 2:12pm geezerette:

Oh the DT of Al's Bar days was definitely MUCH rougher!
@ Nate K: Yeah,L.A.,like N.Y., had it's own architecture and culture. There are still a lot of little "Spanish Colonial" buildings but reaching the tipping point in wrong direction. We had a film based culture and it was funny! You could walk down almost any street and see a Normandy Castle next to a Spanish Mission next to an English Tudor... It was all make believe and studio influenced, charming.
@Dean:East of DT is the current hot spot and it's really great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:19pm Tim 07030:

  Mon. 5/9/16 2:22pm Dean:

Rougher, yes, but also boring as all get-out! Not counting Al's Bar--which was home away from home--signs of life emerged with MOCA, the Green Umbrella series at Japan America Theater, and Gorky's.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 2:26pm Cecile:

so dean, you're saying a city got a little nicer and by that token more interesting? This fraidy-cat tourist is happy to hear that.
  Mon. 5/9/16 2:31pm Polyus:

What is this Lou box you guys are speaking of? Like, the entire discography?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:31pm Cheri Pi:

What city are talking aboot C$?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 2:32pm Cecile:

Dean was talking about L.A., I think.
  Mon. 5/9/16 2:32pm Dean:

That's a good way to put it, Cecile. I always thought LA could be nice, if you hung out at the right places, Al's Bar among them. But downtown was dreary and "edgy" at once. The east side was predominantly warehouses just south of Union Station. When Al's closed in 2002, I think, an artist neighborhood began to appear, and evidently it has flourished. Meanwhile, there is still a Skid Row closer to the center of downtown.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 2:33pm geezerette:

Many breakfasts at Gorky's! Vickman's & Phillipe's too. I actually liked the roughness and emptiness after twilight and on Sundays. I loved driving around in that empty industrial wilderness. The sky was huge. It was kind of like an urban desert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:34pm Cheri Pi:

Gotcha, never been
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 2:35pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 2:36pm Cecile:

geezerette, have you been to Detroit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 2:36pm Cecile:

that's how it was in the 80s. Very deserted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:36pm Cheri Pi:

I know some Cincinnatians who live it there!
  Mon. 5/9/16 2:37pm Dean:

I remember a business trip to St. Louis a few years ago. I stayed downtown, which was rough and empty a la L.A., geezerette.

There's L.A. and L.A. It's just huge. You could spend a long weekend exploring the downtown area, but you'd be miles from, say, Hollywood or other parts west or east. Took me forty years to get used to the place. Then I left.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 2:37pm geezerette:

Here's the thing;there were artists down there from the mid to late 70's onward and you could get huge studio space for well under a buck a foot. Get a lot of work done that way.
  Mon. 5/9/16 2:38pm Dean:

Friend of mine is the sister of David Amico, one of those artists at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:39pm Michael 98145:

All this LA talk is makin me want to hear some Plugz, Dils and the Alley Cats
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:39pm Cheri Pi:

GERMS too
  Mon. 5/9/16 2:40pm Dean:

I was thinking a couple days ago of Kommunity FK, whom I heard at Beyond Baroque. They might still be playing around.

Lord, the Germs. Nothing better, except maybe a triple bill with Screamers and Weirdos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:42pm Michael 98145:

Saw the Screamers at the Whisky once; will never forget that night
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/9/16 2:42pm Cheri Pi:
