Welcome All!

Digging this. No connection to the Mtume who played w/Miles, etc i presume
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
KimSorise:

Yes, Satan - it is the same Mtume. This was his only foray into being a band leader. It's great stuff.

Sonny swoon for woo!

Nice start!

Santos L. Halper:

Ah, i was thrown by the '67 date (though it may actually have been from 71, released 74 per Discogs). Sounds great whenever, as this whole show likely will.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
KimSorise:

Interesting - mine says copyright 1967 but recorded 71 - so yes, you are probably correct. all i know is I scored a fairly beat OG copy that sounds pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Santos L. Halper:

Also learned from wiki that Reggie Lucas from Miles' band was in the group Mtume (pre-Juicy Fruit), and that Mtume himself is Jimmy Heath's son (!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
KimSorise:

Yes the recording Kawaida has Jimmy, Myume and Toudie Heath - it's amazing
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
KimSorise:

Oops Mtume

This is some fine shit you've been slinging, Greasemaster!

Thank P-90. It is the music that I often connect with most. So thank you much.

Welcome back, Kim. Thanks for gracing the internet-waves with these wonderful musics.

Good to be back and heard, Sam! Glad you are enjoying the jammage. Is the horse all hitched?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Doug Schulkind:

Melting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Sam Segal:

Getting hitched up as we speak! My show's got a bit less jazz than usual, so I'm very glad you're covering the stream's quota for the day.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
KimSorise:

Truly one of the sexiest tunes ever recorded.

I'm going to need to take up smoking when this track ends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Doug Schulkind:

Billy Harper now? Dear god, Kim. You are like some evil North Korean interrogator, finding my weakest points and forcing me to divulge. TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW!
Avatar 8:30pm
Jeff:

This show is basically the best.

Sorry, Doug and Scott McD, you now have to up your games.

I have always wanted to follow Blase with Sir Galahad -- same opening key. Glad I can oblige.

The first time I ever heard Theme de YoYo - it brought me to tears and my damn knees. Never looked back.

I hear that, Kim. It had me riveted. One of those pieces that had me saying, "They can DO that?!!"

And where did I first hear it? WFMU.

Was looking around for this AEC album, and the first reviewer on Amazon tells a story about a FMU DJ playing this very track on 9/11:

Doug Schulkind:

Only a fool would attempt to cover this jawdropping number.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
listener james from westwood:

Why, he'd have to be off his bean!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
listener james from westwood:

@Santos, good find on that Amazon page! That was a Tuesday; wonder what the lineup was at that point, which DJ it could've been? It wasn't Trouble as it is now (she had a show on 9/14 of that week). Hmmmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Doug Schulkind:

Ken Freedman played Theme De Yo Yo on his September 12 (2001) show: wfmu.org...

DJ $mall ¢change was on the air the early morning of 9/11 and played a track from Archie Shepp's Blasé: wfmu.org...

Hah, you beat me to it; I was diggin' thru my old LCDs for schedules to narrow it down!

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Poor Sam Segal. There is simply no music left. Sam, please just mumble semi-coherently for the next three hours, 9-midnight (ET) here on the Drummer Stream.

IF YOU LOSE YOUR HORSE is next!

Hip set Kim. Long time WFMU listener just discovered you today. I have or have had so much of this stuff esp love Archie Shepp and anything on Strata/East.
9/11 somebody on WFMU played John Coltrane's "A LOVE SUPREME" it its entirety the day after 9/11 and i needed that and I remember thinking: this is what makes America great and what a shame those people will never get a chance to know that. it was genius to play that. Thanks
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
KimSorise:

Thank you Jeff - that is nice of you to say, but I have a long way to go before I can measure up to these gentlemen. Doug - who would dare cover AEC's YoYo? Blasphemy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Sam Segal:

Luckily, that was the plan already, Doug. For a second there I was afraid Kim might leave a worthwhile song to play, but thankfully I can commence with the mumbling.

Loved the jazziness, Kim! Many thanks!

Thanks Kim!

Thank you for your kind words. Off beat women who like soul & free jazz rarely get an audience, let alone one with such knowledge and stories to boot. It's been my pleasure.
