Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Alex, it was his breakout hit after he left Ernest Tubb (Cal was his drummer, I believe). Big hit in 72
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 12:35pm Alex In Illinois:

In "Action", there is that cash register sound right when that change occurs. I remember a friend saying to me: "Get it!? Get it!? Change!? Change!"

We had the 'Run Joey Run' 45 when I was a wee kiddo. I was pretty fortunate for era & older siblings, as far as tunes go...
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 12:39pm Alex In Illinois:

I always loved the way the synths sound in "Fox on the Run". And this was years before Devo or The Cars. I don't know if it was before Kraftwerk's Autobahn though. I think a number songs by The Cars got synth ideas from Sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/23/15 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

Glad you can blow it off, Sue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/23/15 12:39pm Parq:

According to yesterday's Good Grey, I am regarded by some as the moral equivalent of a Nazi in post-war Germany. As far as I'm concerned, then, the big occasion that's coming up hereabouts is Halloween. Maybe somebody in my nabe will dress up as Ace.
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 12:39pm Lane Gray:

Oops. Cal was Ernest's guitar player, Jack Green was the drummer. Lord Knows I'm Drinking was his first #1

@DS - I was just thinking the same thing!
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 12:58pm Alex In Illinois:

@chromaphone: After I read my post, I felt that I should have worded it a little better. What's that word . . . "influenced" that is what I should have used. I hope Greg Hawkes is not going to see my post and get mad. I liked his synth work when I was into the Cars, but then I became a Devo fan.

@chromaphone: In one of my failed band attempts, I think I said something to the keyboard guy like: "More like Devo, okay if not Devo, then can you play more like Gregory Hawkes of The Cars?"
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 1:18pm Matt in Nebraska:

Haven't heard this one in forever.
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 1:19pm Alex In Illinois:

@Uncle Michael: I don't know why, but I have that exact same recollection of that same moment of that same Elton John and Kiki Dee video too. And I saw it on The Midnight Special too. Maybe it was also played again on Don Kirchner's. Maybe not.

  Fri. 10/23/15 1:25pm P-90:

...and a very nice take on the perennial "Apache" by Jorgen
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 1:26pm Lane Gray:

The Ventures covered it. The show theme was the CBS Orchestra
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/23/15 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

his nice take is the original hit version on this side of the pond
Avatar Fri. 10/23/15 1:28pm Charlie:

That Originals song sure was sweet.
  Fri. 10/23/15 1:28pm P-90:

"Apache" is one of those tunes many of the 60s-era English guitar greats say was one of the first, if not the very first, songs they learned on guitar. I think Hank Marvin of the Shadows made a big impression when he played it on that side of the pond.

  Fri. 10/23/15 1:32pm P-90:

@UM: I was wondering if that was THE big US version of Apache. Another tune I saw the Ventures play many times. And Dick Dale still whips that one out on dates.

I'd never heard that version of Lat Trip to Tulsa, Uncle. Really jazzed about it, gotta get a copy for myself. Electric/drunken treatment really improved that song, which I always sort of thought was the weakest point of the S/T LP

I always remember "Hello It's Me" as faster than it is. Somebody should do a thrash version of it. Loved the Little Feat, need to get out my CDs.

I was at a baby shower where most of the people were in bands and the mom to be unwrapped a music box. Somebody yelled out "Does it play 'Fool for the City'??" which I found absurdly hilarious.
