Options March 25, 2015: Nippon Girls
Women have dominated the Japanese pop music landscape for a solid century, providing the archipelago with its most beloved and forward-looking artists, from Matsui Sumako, who recorded the country's first pop song in 1914, pre- and post-war superstars Kouta Katsutaro and Shizuko Kasagi, and iconic legends like Misora Hibari and Maki Asakawa, to contemporary pop innovators Shiina Ringo and Kahimi Karie and ground-breaking alt girl groups like Buffalo Daughter, Ex-Girl, Nisennenmondai and OOIOO.

Tonight, we'll celebrate this rich X chromosome-centric history with a three-hour, 100-year journey from early 20th century shellac to this year's hottest tracks, including many of your favorite cuts and at least a few jams never before aired on WFMU or GTDR.

I caught Shonen Knife fever in the '90s -- met all three ladies at the SF branch of Virgin Megastore.
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 8:51pm Gary:

I first heard Shonen at Tower Records in SF in 1987 or 88 and loved it, but then sort of forget about them until recently. I finally saw them live in 2010
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 8:53pm pacific standard simon:

That tour where I met them, the opening act was... wait for it... Michael Shelley!

Whoa, WFMU's own?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 8:56pm pacific standard simon:

Tower and Virgin are both long gone from SF, of course. Yep, the very. Michael was on the same label as Shonen Knife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 8:56pm doca:

Hi, Gary and all! Sorry to check-in late, I was watching Robert Wise's The Haunting. I must say it got me scared
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 8:56pm Gary:

That's awesome
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 8:57pm Gary:

Doca! I think I need to see that movie
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 8:57pm hyde:

@doca I *love* that movie. Great book, too.
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:00pm Gary:

Bear in mind that Ringo Shiina is a superstar on the order of Cher, and she's doing that with her voice in 2000
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:00pm doca:

It's really great. I wasn't expecting anything that great, but it is really frightening and beautifully made, sound editing and camera work is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:04pm pacific standard simon:

If memory serves, "ringo" is Japanese for "apple". So Japanese Beatle fans knew their drummer as Apple Starr.
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:05pm Gary:

^Yes
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:05pm hyde:

@doca the scene where Eleanor and Theo are in the bedroom and are getting menaced is totally terrifying! I also love Mrs Dudley's "in the night....in the dark" bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:05pm doca:

And that's why they named their label Apple
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:05pm Gary:

Can I see this movie on Netflix?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:07pm doca:

I don't know, @Gary, I downloaded it, but I have Brazilian Netflix which has like 2% of what you have over there (my Netflix plug-in isn't working anymore)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:08pm pacific standard simon:

It seems NOT, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:09pm doca:

@hyde: Yes! All the bedroom scenes are amazing and they involve only few elements. Just sound and almost the same frames.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:10pm doca:

Have any of you seen that "Get A Life" series from the early 90s? I remember there is a haunted house episode on it and I got scared as hell with it, even though it is a comedy series
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:13pm Gary:

I don't think so, no
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:14pm pacific standard simon:

You can rent it for as little as $3 on Amazon if you need to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:15pm Ike:

Hello!

@doca, is your plug-in called Hola Unblocker? I have heard about this, but I haven't tried it yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:19pm doca:

@Ike: Yeah, it was, but I don't know why it is not working anymore. I have lots of friends who use it regularly. It opens not only Netflix but also Hulu and other web services.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:20pm doca:

@Gary: Nisennenmondai have a new record out, don't they?
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:21pm Gary:

I'll have to look that up, Doca!
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:21pm Gary:

Hey, Ike!
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:26pm Gary:

@Doca, I'm seeing reference to a 2015 album: Live at Clouds Hill. Before that, there was N, from 2013, which is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:26pm doca:

Oh yeah, @Gary, it must be it, I was thinking a new album after N.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:31pm doca:

BTW, I find it interesting the place of women in Japanese culture. Lots of artistic representations are centered around women, like the cinema of Ozu, Mizoguchi, and Naruse, lots of manga and anime have strong women characters, and the first novel ever written was written by a Japanese woman. It's interesting to see it in a culture that seems to assign to women only a limited role (or at least was used to do it until recently).
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:37pm Gary:

Michael K. Bourdaghs addresses a bit of that in his book Sayonara Amerika, Sayonara Nippon
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/25/15 9:46pm doca:

@Gary: I'll try to get this book. Thanks!
Avatar Wed. 3/25/15 9:55pm Gary:
