Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Favorite moment from early '70s AM radio: "Smoking in the Boy's Room" is cued up. The singer begins, "How you doin' out there?" Dan Ingram responds, "Fine, how you doin' in there?"

Sorry I forgot to listen live to last week's show, Uncle Mike. Thanksgiving disrupted my Friday rituals. I caught up on the archives Sunday night. It was different yet still comforting.

I guess music is cool if you're into that kind of thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

Did you bring a note from Tom, Simon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/12/14 12:21pm Mike East:

Dave Edmunds is a great one to test compression I think...everything is right out front and sooo big.

Yeah -- a B flat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 12:22pm Uncle Michael:

I finally listened to the Rockpile cd and really don't care for the way it is produced but it prompted me to find some pretty great live recordings of that band on the net.

Although the author does point out that, in some ways, Tom is more Bob Dylan than Bob Dylan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 12:29pm Brian in UK:

The Jordanaires singing backup would make that Merle perfect.
Avatar Fri. 12/12/14 12:29pm ndbob:

one of Merle's best there - and now one of the best sixties songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

Tom didn't really get great until he became Van Vleit.
Avatar Fri. 12/12/14 12:30pm chromaphone:

I wonder just how many great albums were destroyed by 80s production approaches.
  Fri. 12/12/14 12:30pm Dean:

Sure, but Crystal Gayle is more Tom Waits than Tom.

Does the bio mention his time in Whittier?
Avatar Fri. 12/12/14 12:37pm chromaphone:

I wish he would lay off the vocal distortion effect on his albums these days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

@mikeeast lot of work last night
surprisingly luis was helpful
regarding tom waits
biff dawes told me at a
tom waits gig in the eighties
that tom had previously told biff
that tom found most producers
and studio engineers
not able to grok what tom wanted
and that is why he used biff
to engineer in the studio
and sometimes at his then
quite rare live gigs

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 12:42pm pacific standard simon:

My introduction to Tom Waits was seeing him open for Frank Zappa in early '74 -- in between his first two records. The book says that tour was a nightmare for him, because of all the impatient fans yelling for "Zappa!!!"
Avatar Fri. 12/12/14 12:42pm nah:

Thanks chromaphone, UM and Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

I saw him in '82 and then again in '12. Both were sensational shows.

Zappa or Waits? 'Cuz if Zappa, just wow.

Avatar Fri. 12/12/14 12:47pm Lane Steelpicker:

I missed the Rey. Darn.
Yes, Rey beat Drake to the talking steel guitar. Stringy was CREEPY
Avatar Fri. 12/12/14 12:47pm chromaphone:

From wiki: "In 1939, Alvino Rey, amateur radio operator W6UK, used a carbon throat microphone wired in such a way as to modulate his electric steel guitar sound. The mic, originally developed for military pilot communications, was placed on the throat of Rey's wife Luise King (one of The King Sisters), who stood behind a curtain and mouthed the words, along with the guitar lines. The novel-sounding combination was called "Singing Guitar", and employed on stage and in the movie Jam Session, as a "novelty" attraction, but was not developed further.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 1:19pm pacific standard simon:

I'm big on poaching chicken breast in brine, then finishing on a grill pan under the broiler. Maybe it would work for turkey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/12/14 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

I like the idea of flattening it, filling it and rolling it.
Avatar Fri. 12/12/14 1:19pm Lane Steelpicker:

Roast it simple. Some herbs, a few spices. Root veggies in the pan. Like a chicken. Carrots, onions, maybe parsnips or rutabaga in the pan. That's the vote of the steel picker.

I like brining turkey breast (Michael Ruhlman's chicken brine works well), ruhlman.com...

Then I like to make a compound butter mixing together a stick of softened butter, salt (unless the butter is saltened), something sweet like honey or maple syrup and some chopped herbs of your choice (not rosemary though, too overpowering). Take the mixture, roll it like a joint in plastic wrap, chill, then slice into disks and put under the skin before roasting. I like to roast in a pan on top of sliced onions, garlic, a Parmiggiano Reggiano cheese rind if you have one and a little water so you get a nice jus while you roast.

you can put it in a crockpot. And the flattening always takes less time than you think, if it's fully thawed.

My old MO used to be put butter with garlic and herbs under the skin. Put a lemon and an onion in the cavity. Start hot with foil on the breast. Cook it hot for 15 minutes. then take off the foil and turn it down to 350 and cook until it reaches temperature.

Makes a crazy great gravy.

OK, heard the turkey breast request: Here's what I do (and I do them rather frequently as one of our faves).
Gently pull up skin to separate from flesh but not break skin. Place under skin in about 4 separate areas of the breast an emulsion (right term?) Emulsion can be, as an example (use what you have / get creative): Seasoned (salt/pepper) butter pats squished w/ smashed garlic clove, lemon zest and sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary, sage, parsley. Or you can do the same with feta cheese pieces or crumbles.

Oil breast [EVOO], season lightly w/ salt and pepper. Place upside down on V-rack in shallow pan: Place on lowest oven shelf at preheated 325 degrees. Cook 20 min. Rotate breast to its side and baste w/ chicken stock and roast another 20 mins. Rotate to other side and baste and rotate every 20 min. as many times needed within total cooking time, but ending with 20 mins. breast up.
