Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:12pm Pedro G.:

In a twisted way, better that Brownback can't slink off. Amazing how quickly his bumper stickers will disappear.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:12pm Alex In Illinois:

I used to brew Ginger beer. The recipe said it was non-alcoholic. I guess it starts out that way, but after 10 days in a sealed container in the dark that yeast does SOMETHING with the sugar, and it seemed to be stronger than normal beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Alex!

Simon, dunno. He played with Freedy Johnston forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:13pm Brian in UK:

A non alchoholic GB for me Uncle. Mind you I found out that one tin of Desnoes & Geddes GB has something like THIRTEEN spoons of sugar in it.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:14pm Alex In Illinois:

Afternoon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:17pm Brian in UK:

I prefer Desnoes & Geddes Red Stripe for some strange reason. You have to check the tins over here as it is also brewed in Bedford (UK).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:17pm pacific standard simon:

The frost has been pretty heavy here for three nights, but the snow is skipping us. I think Tony Coulter might be getting snow, though.

Afternoon, chromaphone!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:22pm pacific standard simon:

Michael, you should tell Holly over the air that there's likely a way to turn off gifs and/or images in her browser.

You and me, both.

Robert, fetch me a ginger beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:29pm pacific standard simon:

The gif would be way cooler if it was slowed down so that it took a full minute to complete one cycle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Then it would cycle about 10 times during this track.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:33pm Dominick:

Seems Mr. Maby is a resident of New Jersey
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:33pm pacific standard simon:

Uncle "Honorary Jeff" Michael, apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

Freedy was working out of Hoboken, back when...so Graham in Jersey isn't too surprising.

Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:36pm Jeff Golick:

Actually...I do feel tardy.

You are always welcome in Jeff the Brotherhood, Uncle Michael. I'll take a ginger beer, too, please. (But please cover the nutrition label.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

And all you can say is "darn," Lane?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:37pm pacific standard simon:

Hey Lane, would you get stoned in a field with Tanya Tucker?
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:37pm Lane Steelpicker:

It's mitigated by the knowledge that I can listen later
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

And I'm getting tired. Been up since around 10 last night. Fatigue breeds more apathy than stroppy in me
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

How does the bass player not get a cramp?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:41pm pacific standard simon:

It's a Frippertronic bass player.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:42pm Lane Steelpicker:

I might think about it, Simon. But as a child of the DC music Scene, my heart belongs to Emmylou.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

I've been drinkin' since the river took Emmylou.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:44pm pacific standard simon:

In that case, you should schedule a cross-country run in early October -- she's always a presence at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/14/14 12:44pm Mike East:

I got inspired last week and made beef stew w/ barley on Sunday. Also, watched "World On a Wire" which features Uncle Michael's closing bed music pretty prominently. It was a Hinky Dinky week.
(also coincidentally, I recall a line in World on a Wire being "Champagne, of course")
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:45pm pacific standard simon:

Drinkin' muddy water, no doubt.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:45pm Lane Steelpicker:

Cool aspect of the cool new phone (Droid Bionic now retired for the HTC one M8): ringtones and notifications don't pause a stream. This sound protocol multitasks. So interruptions no longer pause and put me behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:47pm Uncle Michael:

That's great news. I don't know what my S5 does. No one calls me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:48pm pacific standard simon:

Today I'm planning on a pot of sweet potato miso soup, as a dry run for Thanksgiving.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:48pm listener james from westwood:

Mike East: The Cooking Light issue that just arrived is themed around slow cookers w/ a pic of beef stew on the cover. Just in time for the frosty weather rolling in. Will have to see if the recipe includes barley.

Ain't a day yet dawned that can't be improved by a Marty Robbins cut.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:49pm Lane Steelpicker:

Simon, about 6 or 7 years ago, Emmylou's show featured my dad. I have a dedicated run from KC to Jersey. And the closest FXG Linehaul gets to SF is Power Line Road in Sacramento
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

I also have a fridge and freezer full of slow cooker chili from earlier this week, but I'm hankering to give another batch a try, this one with chunks of meat instead of all beans.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:50pm still b/p:

Do any cell phones get robocalls from campaigns and poll-takers? Or marketing and fundraising calls? Mine doesn't, but I'm hangin onto the landline and, sweet jesus, was it busy the last month.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:51pm Lane Steelpicker:

James, try Ree Drummond's chili recipe. But increase the chili powder, cumin and cayenne. Sounds odd to leave out onions, but it works.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:51pm Wilson K:

At the end, the city cowboy took his money and left, so maybe the handful of dukes was a wad of cash he put down betting he could beat the brute
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/14/14 12:52pm Mike East:

slow cooker season is the best. Think I'll do a chili after T-giving. This weekend, I will be attempting to make duck. Never done it, so I'm excited.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:52pm Lane Steelpicker:

Still, I was getting them, but I got dead air robocalls. So they went to my killfile
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:52pm pacific standard simon:

Don't get all hinky, Michael!
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:53pm listener james from westwood:

b/p: I get one spam caller now and again on my cell, somehow gets through donotcall.gov. No robopolls. For the bulk of 2007 I'd get weekly calls from a collections agency to a previous owner of my cell #. Finally answered and screamed at the guy. They actually stopped.
  Fri. 11/14/14 12:53pm Robert:

That Continental Suit tune has been used a lot: Sink the Bismarck, Rambling Wreck of Ga. Tech, probably lots of others.

Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

My only beef w/ that film is they couldn't do a whole miniseries using the full, black depths of the book and the characters' backstories. Hoo boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

Sink the Bismark is johnny Horton, isn't it?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/14/14 1:05pm northguineahills:

I love this Bill Frisell album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 1:06pm pacific standard simon:

He posted "October 10, 1969" and "Some Of Our Best Friends Are", but specified that they were not, strictly speaking, part of the series.
Avatar Fri. 11/14/14 1:07pm listener james from westwood:

Where possible, I've been substituting shallots for onions. Onions still in the chili I make, but for omelets, stir-fries, etc., one good-sized shallot makes the point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/14/14 1:07pm Uncle Michael:

Recall 2 earthquakes. First in the 80s, in NJ, centered on the Ramapo fault north of me. Woke up b/c it knocked some crap off my desk. Bed was shaking, but it was a Saturday during my high school years, so I said, "Must be an earthquake" and went back to sleep. 2nd was also here in NJ, but it was that one centered down in, what, Virginia, a few years back. Felt like someone was rocking my chair from behind with enough insistence to wake me up if I were napping.

Outside of the VA earthquake, the only other ones I've been in was in Japan, where 6.1 was the strongest. It cracked a few large thin paned windows in our school and knocked over a few shelves. We got to cower under our desks, it was fun! (we were a good 70 km from the epicenter)
