Speaking of terrific WFMU programming, I urge you to tune in tomorrow, 9a-12p for Joe McGasko's Surface Noise program. Here is the blurb:

Twilight Nuages
Thursday, July 10th, 9am - Noon
on Surface Noise with Joe McGasko
Back in 1977, a high school music teacher named Bill Last joined forces with some of his students to record an LP in his parents' basement. Charming, poignant, and often lovely, that rare private-press album has just been reissued by the Folk Evaluation label. Renewed interest has motivated the group to get back together for a few reunion gigs, and today on Surface Noise, we'll talk with Bill and play some exclusive tracks recorded at the band's first reunion gig last month. Fans of Milos Foreman's Taking Off and the Langley Schools Music Project would do well to tune in.

I featured the 1977 album four years ago in my Mining the Audio Motherlode column in WFMU's blog, and lo and behold, the band is back together!

Read my comments from April 2010: blog.wfmu.org...

@Doug - Thanks for heads up! I rarely get to listen to my beloved Joe in real time now that he's a morning guy, but I just might be able to catch some of tomorrow's show. Everything is better in real time, when possible ;-)

Also want to point out that Twilight Nuages = Connecticut. Connecticut has birthed a surprising number of excellent private press lps given its (sadly true) rep as a generally uncool state.

pss, Have you ridden the WSF Walla Walla? Is it still in service? It's the one with fake wood formica tables that seat 8-10 and the 1974 earth-tones color scheme and sounds like Gene Krupa on acid when throttled up.

Gary, Been lurking most of the show. Before it was known as lurking we called it listening. I fall back on the old ways so easily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Gary:

1994 = first year I heard the term "lurking" in reference to hanging out online
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
pacific standard simon:

@Droll - My not-so-secret secret is that this isn't my first time on the island; a previous attempt to live here ('93-'94) met with abject failure. So, yes, I've ridden the Walla Walla many a time (with no internet!) while commuting to a job in Seattle. I believe it's still a substitute, or maybe on another route.

@PSSimon.....I know! My first WSF trip was in the 1950' when I was 11 years old We traveled out to Lopez to visit my paternal grandfather and aunt for the first time. Spent hours at Agate Beach exploring and collecting beautiful small pebbles. I loved it out there so much. I was lucky to return in 1990 to live there myself. I miss it so much. @droll:
find a wide mouth pint mason jar.
throw in: *ALL AT ROOM TEMP CANNOT STRESS IMPORTANCE*
1 egg yolk (best you can find, if not local, def. cert. humanely raised & organic) Save white to make a Ramos Gin Fizz or a Pisco Sour ;-)
1 t. prepared dijon mustard
scant T. fresh lemon juice
scant T. Bragg's apple cider vinegar
1 T. whey
-- YOU CAN GET 1 T whey in under 5 minutes from draining Seven Stars Farm Organic Full Fat Plain yogurt, or your own homemade yogurt, or your homemade paneer or whatever. And no worries! 1 T. plain old water is fine too, just decreases life span & health benefits of mayo. So use that tap water if need be :-)

Throw about 1C high oleic expeller pressed safflower oil on that mess. Yo seriously, olive oil is not your friend here (becomes bitter), but neither is nasty supermarket veg oil (will kill you sooner than later)

LET SETTLE AT LEAST 30 SECONDS UNLESS YOU LIKE FAILURE.

OK. now follow instructions @ Serious Eats for how immersion blender needs to be on bottom of vessle and stay there, creating vortex. After about 30 seconds no motion & then some tilting & swirling, you will have mayo. You will know when you have mayo. NOW AND ONLY NOW add salt to taste, and adjust whatever else you want.

If you used whey not water, let sit out for about 8 hours, before tossing in fridge. You heard me! Developed probiotics increase deliciousness & overall mayo shelf life by weeks. If you used water, put in fridge immediately. Water mayo life = about 2 weeks, whey mayo = about 4 weeks. ***********IF YOU ADD RAW GARLIC TO MAKE AIOLI YOU ARE BACK DOWN TO WEEK FRIDGE LIFE BEST - BOTULISM NOT YOUR FRIEND ***********

If anyone really cares, e-mail me.

Also, at this stage in my life I am anti-soy so no, don't ask me :-)
