Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 6:50pm Gary:

Going to rev up some throwaway music and break into the stream in 2 minutes ...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 6:50pm Dervish:

No need. I will just soak in your Bodegaliciousness.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 6:54pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:03pm glenn:

Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:03pm northguineahills:

Cool, and coinkdoiky, I need to head out to the bodega in about 15 minutes.

Trivial aside, DJ Olive used to call his beat-oriented music 'bodega beats'.

word, another nice trip around the sun ndbob! (inbob, now?).
  Wed. 1/15/14 7:04pm Gloria:

What is "east Jackson heights"
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:05pm ndbob:

Thanks NGH!I figured I would stick with ndbob for now - not sure what I would replace the buffalo logo with
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:06pm Gary:

Howdy NGH and Gloria! East Jackson Heights is the area around Roosevelt at like 82nd and east of that, more or less. At least, I think of it as EJH
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:06pm northguineahills:

somewhere east of west Jackson Heights? I say I live in north Bushwick, b/c East Williamsburg is a realtors concoction.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Hooray for Gary and all them foreign accents in the song titles. I bet he sprains a finger before the show is over.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:08pm Gary:

LOL ... well, it's quite possible that East Jackson Heights is a Gary concoction ... :)
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:09pm Gary:

Just cuttin and pastin ... hi Doug! And thanks for letting me join the fabulous team here!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:10pm Gary:

Doug, I think this song is from the first record you ever linked to of mine from the WFMU blog
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Gary spins, the world wins!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:17pm Gary:

Lemme know if the bass is too insanely loud on this one
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:18pm Gary:

I can't tell if Arthur H is channeling Gainsbourg or Waits ... maybe both
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Sounds great.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:23pm Rich in Washington:

I'm listening on some pretty good, studio-monitor-type headphones and the sound quality's quite good.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Maybe we can all get our moms to listen. Mine needs a new Drummer show to listen to.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rich on the MDR-V6's!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:26pm Doug Schulkind:

Wow, this guy really should wash his mouth out with 肥皂.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:26pm Rich in Washington:

My mom has never heard me on the air. Once their neighbor called them to tell them that they heard me on the radio. It's probably better that way.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:27pm Gary:

Mom's either groovin to this, or recoiling.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

@Kenzo; Still! I am convinced they are probably the perfect ones for me in terms of both quality and price.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

This is awesome, Gary!
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rich: Today on the way to my last show I ALMOST forgot my MDR-V6's. What a disaster that would've been!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:28pm Gary:

Rich, I can't express enough love 4 the Hotdog
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:29pm Rich in Washington:

Yes. Thank goodness!

Indeed Rich

I have some Finnish Hip Hop I should share. My mother in law brought it back from a trip and she told me some kids on the street told her what to buy.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Ladies and gents, meet the MDR-V6: kenrockwell.com...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:30pm Gary:

You may have seen this guy in Crossing the Bridge
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:31pm Gary:

I can't tell if there's a Beatles pun in the title or not
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:31pm Rich in Washington:

I've found headphones are like Scotch or cigars. Once you buy a really good pair, it wrecks you for cheaper ones.
I just refuse to buy silly, overpriced rockstar signature headphones.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:32pm Rich in Washington:

I like non-English hip Hop better than English.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:32pm Jesse K:

brother sister duo
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:33pm Gary:

Rich, I need to hear the Finnish hip hop!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:33pm northguineahills:

about 15 years ago, my parents came to see my band play for the first time, since it was in my home town. They left after about 5 minutes. I asked them why they left, and they said, "all we heard was noise!".
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:33pm northguineahills:

yeah, it's hard to make UK hiphop work ;)
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:37pm Holly in NC:

Heellloooo Gary and all other friends!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry I'm late, but glad I'm earlier than expected!

Yay Gary!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:37pm Gary:

Found this Cheba Maria CD on Fifth Ave in Brooklyn at Princess Music. There used to be about five or six places to get Arabic music down there (Bay Ridge), but no longer.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:38pm Gary:

The Holly!!!!!!!<------[infinity]
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:38pm Rich in Washington:

I think my show would frighten and confuse my mother, who thinks Singing in the Rain is the pinnacle of music. I am pretty sure my dad would be upset at the sheer amount of obscenity and weirdness in my shows.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:38pm Holly in NC:

And happy birthday ndbob! Super day!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:39pm Doug Schulkind:

I used to go to Rashid Sales on Court Street in Brooklyn all the time. That was my Om Kaltsoum supplier extraordinaire.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:39pm Rich in Washington:

Arabic Hip Hop just plain sounds cooler.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:39pm northguineahills:

There' still a place on south side of Atlantic Ave I believe b/tn Bond & Nevins. (to get Arabic pop tapes).
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:39pm Gary:

ndbob birthday party!!!!!!!!!<------[endless loop of these]
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:39pm Rich in Washington:

Is his Moroccan, Gary?
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:39pm ndbob:

Thanks Holly!
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:40pm ndbob:

and Gary!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:40pm Gary:

Yes, that was indeed Moroccan
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:40pm northguineahills:

I remember putting in what I thought was parent-friendly mix in the car and my father insinuating the meaning of certain Stereolab lyrics.
  Wed. 1/15/14 7:40pm LRSN:

I liked that Casablanca jam
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:41pm Rich in Washington:

Holy crap, this is AWESOME!!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:41pm Gary:

OMG! LRSN IS IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:41pm Holly in NC:

It's a jungle out there! ;-)
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:42pm Gary:

Rich, this is literally my favorite rap track, ever. Well, one of them anyway
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:43pm ndbob:

!!!! - great stuff
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:43pm Jesse K:

yewah, this Maori track is so good!
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:43pm Rich in Washington:

Straight Outta Upper Hutt!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:43pm My Mind:

Blown.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

omg hearing you say "Coney Island Avenue" made me really homesick.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:46pm Jesse K:

I can confirm Upper Hutt Posse is missing.
I believe Ceza's sister Ayben was the other rapper on that track.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

P.S. Who are the other 5 people in that photo of Doug?
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 7:48pm hyde:

I'm late. Obviously, I already missed all kinds of cool stuff (especially the Phuong Dung, who I love). Must go back later!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:48pm Doug Schulkind:

That dude's afro has nothing on mine (from 1976).
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:49pm Gary:

Jesse, yes, you're right and I should have included Ayben in the tracklist ...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:50pm Holly in NC:

@Kenzo - good one :-)
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:51pm Jesse K:

just trainspotting here, I though it was curious in a family way but not necessary to actually write down
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Gary and Jesse are like the Ruth and Gehrig of Maori rap–playing DJs!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:51pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:54pm Gary:

Can't listen to this Lata number w/out the tears, they come streaming down
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:57pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
I think I played Baksevanis from that set.

Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 7:58pm Gary:

My mom loved the Chinese song :)
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:00pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:04pm northguineahills:

I'm going to have to take breaks to make huitlacoche potato jalapeno soup in a bit (w/ oaxaca queso croutons). I'll hope to catch the last few minutes.

Dude, NGH, I haven't eaten yet -- not fair!

I love the geographical info in the back announcing. That's great! and yeah, ngh--what time should we come over???
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:10pm northguineahills:

should take me 70 minutes if I'm lazy (i feel lazy).
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:10pm Mike East:

hey northguineahills. What's huitlacoche? I just ate some lentils. Much less exotic sounding, but goddamn delicious.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:13pm northguineahills:

It's a fungus that grows on corn. In the US, they call it corn smut, and throw it away and think of it as a pest. In Mexico, it's a delicacy (rightfully so). I've only seen it in stores once in Bushwick, and once in East Harlem. I usually have the gf's friends mail cans of it for us.

(Some restaurateurs try to rebrand it as corn truffles)
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I need to divide up the playlist comments into separate simultaneous rooms, so that one will always be about food. Or maybe everyone needs to type what they're eating to appear next to their name. (Links to recipes optional.) Gary's show would certainly be aromatic.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:14pm Gary:

This insanely awesome woman is a judge on Arabs Got Talent
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:14pm Uncle Michael:

Bodhi is digging the tunes. Me too.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:15pm earrie:

I nominate a new column for this show's playlist: a pin icon that will click to open a map. I find some regions to be tougher than others to discover beyond 'country name'.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:16pm Uncle Michael:

hashtags, Kenzo

mmmm....hash.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:17pm Gary:

Najwa was like 23 or 24 when she recorded this
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:17pm Mark:

Oh dude, Gary's breaking out the big guns 2night!
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:17pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:31pm northguineahills:

feel better Erik!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:31pm Jesse K:

I haven't given myself the chance yet but I would totally eat corn smut. I don't think I'd eat Mexican Truffles, that sounds like a realtors term.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:34pm Mike East:

@ngh - what kind of a taste does it have? like mushroomy?
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:36pm Gary:

Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:38pm Mike East:

Hey Gary, thanks for the tunes
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:38pm Holly in NC:

Corn smut is damn tasty. Still eating my leftover canned salmon salad, which is awesome (preserved lemons are the best part). Making side green salad to go with, inspired by music to include toasted pistachios, oh yes.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:38pm fleep:

This is a great alternative to Paranoia Playhouse next door, thanks GTDR and Gary.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:39pm Gary:

thank *you* for joining us, fleep! Any relation to the comic by Jason Shiga?
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:40pm Gary:

The next singer (up in 2 mins or so) will be familiar to all/most of you, but it's a super early recording ...

I had a salad today of bib lettuce, spinach, red and green onion, cucumber, edamame, tomato, avocado, lemon juice, tofu, salt/pepper, gorgonzola cheese, drizzle of olive oil.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:41pm Gary:

next week I'm going to try and have dinner before the show starts ...
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:42pm Erik B.:

I've had water and cough syrup all day, in equal portions.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:42pm northguineahills:

@Mike: I'd say it's somewhere b/tn a mild mushroom and a mild a mild mild truffle. Mild flavor is the key b/tn the two. It's usually comes in a semi-liquid form (think a thick chowder w/ mushroomy stuff).
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:42pm fleep:

@Gary Not the sealed in concrete kind, the watery blowhole kind. Also not a Flying Jeep, nor a chat service, nor a site of deep houses mixes. There are many fleeps.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:43pm Gary:

Erik, I feel for you. I'm a complete baby when I have a fever. I'm a partial baby the rest of the time
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:44pm Mike East:

interesting...
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:44pm Erik B.:

Wow. This tune sounded like the Contortions during the intro.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:44pm doca:

Have to go, but you sure got a loyal new listener, Gary, thanks for the show!

Congrats on the new show, Gary! So pleased and excited. I had a headache but the sweet music has massaged my brain and cured it.

Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:47pm Gary:

LRSN, you are a superhero!
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:47pm LRSN:

Hit "Show more"
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:48pm Jessi:

Thanks for the research LRSN. As to dinner I am cooking bitter melon for the first time. Favorite recipes, anyone?
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:49pm Doug Schulkind:

This fab. The sax sounds like it's made of plastic. In a good way.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:52pm Holly in NC:

Must leave for date elsewhere, will catch last hour on the archives. Super, super show Gary, thank you very much.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:52pm hyde:

whoa, this song is amazing!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:52pm Gary:

My favorite is the bread recipe my mom taught me while I was out there during the holidays in 2012
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:54pm hyde:

I still have a National Geographic flexi disk with humpback whale songs on it...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:54pm Holly in NC:

@Jessi - No, but I trust Julie Sahni 100% for Indian recipes, esp. veg, so I'd suggest ye old Google.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:55pm Jesse K:

@hyde, I had that flexi! I remember listening to it in the back of the car on a portable battery powered record player.
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:55pm Jessi:

Hyde I am so jealous tho come to think of it there might be free recordings out there somewhere. Ooh, treasure to hunt for!
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:56pm Jessi:

@holly thanks for suggestion, will do
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:56pm Gary:

As is probably obvious, I'm label-ignorant
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:57pm hyde:

@Jesse K: ha, that's hilarious. mine sounds *terrible*, I think I played it too much in college
  Wed. 1/15/14 8:58pm Jessi:

@Gary who cares, I looove this!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 8:59pm Doug Schulkind:

I adore this pat waing drum circle stuff. They tune the drums with some gooey tree residue. I think.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 8:59pm hyde:

@Holly agree on Julie Sahni. The "Classic Indian Cooking" book is really great
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 9:00pm Santos L Halper:

Very groovy show Gary. Glad to have you on the air(stream)!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:00pm Gary:

Got it at Thiri Video in Elmhurst, Jessi ... and thank you, Santos!

I nicked this amazing record from Bodega Pop ages ago. Here it is: bodegapop.blogspot.com...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:04pm Gary:

I found it either in Bronx or East Elmhurst ... I think the latter ...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:09pm Gary:

Haven't shared this one yet -- lots of Tamil stuff I need to upload at some point ...

My mom just wrote me to say i was fading in and out ... anyone having issues with the stream/sound?
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Loud and clear, Gary.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Maybe your mother is just a bit light-headed with pride.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:21pm Gary:

okay, will tell mom to reboot or something ...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:22pm Gary:

Or maybe she was trying to excuse herself from the farting t.A.T.u synths or whatever this is
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:24pm northguineahills:

Actually. it cut in and out a few times in the last 7 minutes on my side... like now...
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 9:24pm Santos L Halper:

Toot-toot, hey, beep-beep!
  Wed. 1/15/14 9:24pm Jessi:

Oh yeah, the Leef! I've tried to turn my family on. To him. Not sure if it's took.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 9:25pm hyde:

yeah, i just had some sound drop outs myself...
  Wed. 1/15/14 9:25pm Jessi:

Ok that came out weird due to rogue period. Sorry for sounding sketchy.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:26pm Doug Schulkind:

Ladies and gents, please meet Abu El Leef: jadebellydance.files.wordpress.com...

and here: 2.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:26pm earrie:

A couple blips on my end, too. Mp3. No restarts req'd.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:27pm Gary:

LOL, Jessi ... that was my favorite album of 2012, I think.
  Wed. 1/15/14 9:27pm Jessi:

Perfect sound here in Seattle.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:28pm earrie:

(It sounded quite a bit like the post 3x-dump-button hiccups from Ken's show this morning.)
  Wed. 1/15/14 9:28pm Jessi:

Sound drops could be due to local wifi interference, if any of you are streaming the stream.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:29pm Gary:

Yeah, I had Nicecast hidden behind Audacity, so I couldn't see it ... front & center now
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:30pm Doug Schulkind:

The sound did drop out, briefly, three times during the Abu El Leef.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:36pm Gary:

Bummer -- poor Mr. Leef!
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Guess you have to turn over a new Leef, Gary.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:40pm Gary:

This album has the grooviest cover. I need to reup it, though:bodegapop.blogspot.com...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:40pm Gary:

And, yes, I totally bought it based on the cover, too.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:42pm Doug Schulkind:

You DID reup it, Gary! The link works.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:42pm northguineahills:

dropped again...
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:43pm Gary:

This is a recent find, right off Broadway in Astoria, on like 36 Street or thereabouts. This guy's from Spain, I think, and I'm pretty sure he's channeling Beck. Weird about the stream -- Nicecast shows a clear signal ... :(
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Nothing dropped here. Hey NGH, are you listening to via MP3 stream or the pop-up player?
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:45pm Gary:

I sure wish I understood Spanish, right about now
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:47pm Gary:

Two more songs after Senor Sabina is through. Will probably be like 3 minutes shy of 10 PM
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:52pm northguineahills:

I have to use my brain to understand espanol, and when I do, 90% of the time, the lyrics are as vacuous as American pop. My Mexi gf agrees.
Avatar Wed. 1/15/14 9:55pm Gary:

Und dot's dot.
Avatar    Wed. 1/15/14 9:56pm hyde:

great start for a new show. thanks for the tour of the globe and the record shops of nyc!
