Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:16pm Stevel:

First time listening to you live UM, although I've hit the archive previously and have chatted with you on occasion via the boards. Sounds like a great start, which is good, because I have to stay and my computer and GET SHIT DONE! Thank you for already making that easier.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

Glad to have you here and glad to assist, Steve!

Hi Indy Bob.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:38pm Mike East:

Gladiators "Looks Is deceiving" would be good next, with my favorite line of theirs: "The goat never know the use of his tail 'til the butcher cut it off"
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

I need to hear that one.

yeah Brian...a line heard on last week's show!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:53pm pacific standard simon:

@Mike East - Also a teenage hobby of Negativland's "The Weatherman" -- he's played some of those tapes on his for-realsies radio appearances.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:54pm Mike East:

our radio station was W-SMELLY-J, which I think was a takeoff of WPLJ, which my parents listened to, combined with toilet humor, which was very funny to me at the time.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:55pm listener james from westwood:

i thought that was helen kane, from my vantage point in the kitchen.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

had to be one of the Boops!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:56pm Mike East:

@pss - Its good time know I wasn't alone. I still have the clock radio that I used to record it...though the tape deck is probably shot...such is the fate of all tape decks.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:56pm Brian in UK:

10" Phew!!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

virtual 10"...not corporeal

Any Slim & Slam in the hopper?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

Henry, plenty around...I can make a point of it next week. Love those guys.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:03pm pacific standard simon:

I hope Bull Moose Jackson wasn't leading that lady on with a virtual 10", too.

Slim and Slam do "It's Gettin' Kinda Chilly."
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:12pm Webhamster Henry:

Some other DJ ground my ears to stumps, so I've come home.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

I can't get my stump grinder to start.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:36pm northguineahills:

Sitting at home for once. Hopefully waiting for my contract to be renewed soon. One of my speakers goes out under normal volume overpowering my receiver. Took some troubleshooting, but I think I finally fixed it. Now I can listen to UM on something better then my laptop speakers.

Hmmm..., I have a few of those Sound Dimension Recs.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:57pm Mike East:

I just took an order from WindUp Records.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:57pm pacific standard simon:

The Fake Cars!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:57pm Mike East:

I think I like The Darkness better than any of the bands they pay homage to.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 1:58pm Uncle Michael:

I'm very smitten with The Darkness.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:02pm Brian in UK:

@UM A stump-grinder is a thing of wonder. You must be peeved.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:03pm Uncle Michael:

It's a grim situation.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:03pm pacific standard simon:

Norman cooked a mighty fine hot dog after the money went away.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

He did?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:07pm G:

doesn't the money still come in when SITS gets licensed (fairly often I've noticed)?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:08pm pacific standard simon:

He bought a chicken farm in Petaluma, went through a bad divorce, and grilled weenies at Jerome's Good Dogs in Cotati, CA in the mid 70s. I ate there often. This was before every goddam movie wanted the rights to "Spirit".
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

There was probably a period of years between the hit and the licensing.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

I'm guessing not a lot of people have heard this one.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:11pm G:

If Norman pens (sorry, keys) a memoir, perhaps one chapter will be titled "My Weenie Era"
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:13pm G:

Yeah, I think the Ramsey may have been covered :)
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:14pm pacific standard simon:

Those really were "good dogs" -- I remember coming in on Saturday nights for a dog and a cup of beer to watch the second season of Saturday Night Live.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:17pm G:

They were made with sky spirit built right in
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:20pm efd:

All this talk about Norman Greenbaum and hot dogs and nobody's made a "Canned Ham" joke?!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

I don't even get the joke!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:22pm pacific standard simon:

What, you ignore the Sparks bait, but you chime in for Greenbaum?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:23pm efd:

ha! I was too busy when Sparks came on to chime in.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah man...what's the DEAL?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:24pm efd:

"Canned Ham" was Norman Greenbaum's second-highest charting single (I think). It's on the b-side of my copy of "Spirit In The Sky" but I think that copy was a later issue, with "back to back hits."
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:24pm pacific standard simon:

How about a "Canned Ham", Canned Heat, and Ege Bamyasi triple play?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:25pm G:

The flavor secret of the great dogs is they were made with all the Canned Ham Norm had on hand that never sold.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:26pm ndbob:

Right EFD - it was the follow-up 45 I think
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:26pm efd:

There we go. Thank you, G.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

Good Jewish ham.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:29pm pacific standard simon:

There's probably a really forced joke in there about the ham and all the eggs on his chicken farm, too.

Oh boy, I love this Pere Ubu track.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:29pm Stevel:

Pere Ubu (Eeeeeeeeeeeee!!)!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:32pm hyde:

woo hoo, I made it for the last half hour for once. Just in time for Badfinger.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

Welcome, Hyde.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:34pm teeter tot:

@hyde. me too, first time on the live rail, better late than never
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

Welcome, newbies...bring me the hazing paddle.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:35pm pacific standard simon:

No place I'd rather be on a Friday morning.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:37pm efd:

Nice of you to think of the cat.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:38pm hyde:

@teeter tot we'll go back for the other 150 minutes later
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:38pm pacific standard simon:

If you don't think of the cat, the cat will surely think of you. As a repeat-offending cat owner, I know this.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:40pm Stevel:

Not that I wasn't listening, but did Klattu write this song?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:41pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:41pm Stevel:

That was a great and mysterious album.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:42pm Ed in Scotchland:

As an extremely infrequent listener of GTDR (and I'm enjoying this show immensely, by the by,) I'd like to know, is the station as a whole best described as 'WFMU 2', or is there some sort of overriding musical concept which drives GTDR, which is distinct from WFMU itself?
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:43pm teeter tot:

Yes Hyde, I was on my way to the archive and you wouldn't believe how my eyes lit up in amazement at my good fortune to discover the live feed.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:44pm Uncle Michael:

Ed, I'd say that in principle it is not distinct, musically...since as with all shows on WFMU's terrestrial signal, GTDR DJs play whatever they feel moved to play.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:44pm hyde:

@Ed i think of it as sort of a parallel Doug Schulkind multiverse
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

I'm glad you're enjoying the show, Ed.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:48pm Andrew Waterloo:

GTDR and the other streams are different in the sense that they have a more consistent 24hr cycle.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:49pm pacific standard simon:

One distinction is that the GTDR stream is open to DJs who do not live in the WFMU broadcast area.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

And we don't have to please the FCC with legal IDs and clean language.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:52pm listener james from westwood:

@ed: plus a couple of WFMU 2 DJs are former on-air DJs, so there's some overlap there, too. about the only difference i can think of is that there are no fcc restrictions on language or content here.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:52pm listener james from westwood:

heh, UM, you beat me to it!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:53pm pacific standard simon:

Although the non-profit restrictions are still there.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:53pm listener james from westwood:

scott walker's a good late-playlist artist. that reflective moment when you realize how damn far off the next program will be.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:53pm Webhamster Henry:

You even could, for example, you could play several Scott Walker cuts in a row.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

Yes I could. And I'm the guy that just might.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:54pm pacific standard simon:

You could, and I could go for a bathroom break.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:55pm swayed alloy:

@James and Uncle. Is that true? Let me check: "Titties" "Monkeybutt"...wow it's true! This is fun!..."Boner"...
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

yes, you could!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:55pm PKNY:

"The Bells" is a Hey Love classic! Not only does it have Marvin Gaye as a co-writer and producer, I believe he also played drums on this.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:57pm pacific standard simon:

It was so cute when Joe McGasko filled in and went all potty mouth.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Your closing theme is just so... perfect.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:57pm ndbob:

excellent show UM!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:59pm hyde:

thanks for the tunes, UM. now I'm gonna pretend it's 9 AM EST Friday and start all over til I'm back to where I came in.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:59pm listener james from westwood:

doug, your end theme is no slouch itself. that's praise from caesar.
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 2:59pm pacific standard simon:

Fondue and Christmas movie marathon on Sunday!
Avatar Fri. 12/13/13 3:00pm Uncle Michael:
