Figure 14 is one of my favorite albums of the '80s but, as Rabbit says, the follow-up has its moments too.

Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:40pm Brian in UK:

Rain cut short that one. The NVB sounded like Billy J Kramer.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:43pm Carmichael:

Actually the lead singer was John Carter, from The Ivy League. So you're pretty close, Brian.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:43pm pacific standard simon:

Oh, man, Ferry Cross The Mersey... I had no idea what a "Mersey" was when I was a kid, but just loved this song.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What was that magazine - B&W, not a glossy cover - ?!??- famously had on the back (??):
- DC5! (foto them getting off plane BritInvasion stylee) - They want to Tour America!
- MC5! (foto shirtless arms crossed face forward) *They* want to Destroy America! ...

Gotta love Pacemakers...
- IvyLeague = Badfinger ??
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:47pm Carmichael:

Wow, Fontana. I'll always remember that label from the Troggs 45s I collected.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:48pm pacific standard simon:

@Kenzo - I'll be limited to the Tuesday night show for at least a little while; it was a schedule trade to get at least ONE weekend day off. I'll be off to work in an hour.

@Rabbit - No, that was The Iveys.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:48pm Jeff Golick:

Can't believe I missed "Cynical Girl." That was one of my main jams back in the day. Archive, ho!
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:50pm Amanda:

@Carmichael -- yes! Me too! And let's not forget Wayne Fontana "Game of Love"

Hi Jeff G! I almost brought a McCartney LP today, too bad because your nice comment would have been even appropriate-r. And agreed on Cynical Girl...
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Girl In Black' - ya never hear it!
- & people say 'Wild Thing' is the only good Troggs - it's not even close to their best...Some comp. say 'Original Artist'...but *not* the original *version*, Thanks all the same...
- oh right pss, Thx...Ivy League were backup singers for hire? Are they on 'Can't Explain' & stuff??...
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@pss: That's why we have Wednesday afternoons! Making a decision is sometimes hard.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:53pm Brian in UK:

@Carmichael link to Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders on Fontana who went onto 10cc. It all connects.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:53pm northguineahills:

good stuff Amanda. For awhile I thought I wondered over into Duane's set.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

(I've been holding onto to that comment for weeks. Couldn't wait any longer, though a Macca item would have been the best time to deploy, for sho.)
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:54pm Carmichael:

Is this song the influence for Yes' I Am a Camera from Union? Rhetorical, because it blatantly is.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:55pm Stanley:

I'm signed in, now where do I sign Up?
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:55pm Brian in UK:

Christopher Isherwood prog lit.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:56pm Amanda:

We will enlist you Stanley!
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I would stubbornly stump for *early* Ultravox's 'I Want to be a Machine' - after Andy Warhol (they're all after Warhol)...
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:57pm Carmichael:

Yes Rabbit, Ivey League 1st appeared as background singers on the Who's Can't Explain. They were really a vocal trio trying to make it on their own.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Hey Stanley, did you get my reply?

@Carmichael were they Carter Lewis and the Southerners?
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:02pm Carmichael:

@Brian: very good! John Carter & Ken Lewis were that band, and a 3rd guy joined them (Perry Ford, had to look his name up). Eventually, Tony Burrows found his way into the band. And there's the Hotlegs/10cc connection.

I made my first stew of the season last Sunday.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:07pm Brian in UK:

@Carmichael Perry Ford had a big hook nose if I remember.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:07pm Stanley:

Did Brian, thanks. I didn't know how the 'contact' thing worked but I do now. I wanted to get in touch to thank you for your 'ghost' message left on the Zero Hour archives, regarding the Pere Ubu/Rokia Traore gig in Edinburgh. Funny thing is that I'm actually heading to the venue tomorrow to listen to McFall's Chamber do a Zappa/Beefheart tribute evening. So think I'll purchase a couple of tix for Pere Ubu there and then, though I can't really get my head round the Traore/Ubu double act thing.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:10pm Brian in UK:

Stanley seems like a wacko double bill. Thought you might hit that gig tomorrow. Zappa's siblings are touring again soon.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:11pm Stanley:

@Brian - have you ever been to a Dweezil Zappa gig?
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:12pm Brian in UK:

Do you know this guy picked some of his own records on Desert Island Disks?

No Stanley, some folks I know saw the Albery Hall gig a couple of years back and loved it. Too much for my mirror.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sunday Sept. 22nd 4:43 P.M. Eastern Time U.S. is thee oh-ficial minute of Equinox / Beginning of Autumn (= Sun leaves ♍Virgo & enters ♎Libra).
...Says my Calendar here anyroad...
- It is one of the two days a year Day & Night are Equal Length (Equi-Nox) - the other being beginning of Spring (Vernal Equinox). The Solstices (Sol-Stice = 'Sun Stands Still') mark the beginning of Summer - Longest Day - & the beginning of Winter - the Shortest Day (just before Xmas).

Here I am tapping my foot to this Englebert song.
Gawd I feel old.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:13pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Ahh..A little Englebert to bring in high noon. Loving the show!
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Jeez, how many Jimmie Rodgerses are there?!?
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:16pm Stanley:

@Brian - the DZ gigs up here have been packed, drunk and rowdy affairs. A bit weird.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:16pm Uncle Michael:

How many Jimmies do you need, Doug? I think I can make change.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:16pm Brian in UK:

He kept The Beatles Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields off No1 with Release Me. Twat.

Jimmie sounds like Cocktails for Two.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pop stars are great but arrogant mothers like Englebert I can live without. Now Tom Jones has some degree of humility and a voice.

@Brian - I hope you said hello. Ralph Stanley still alive and gigging? Amazing.

Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:25pm Brian in UK:

Stanley there were too many others chatting up Bobbie. Ralph had a lad that looked about sixteen playing banjo who was stunning. Poor old chap can hardly play now.

@UM ain't that so.

Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:28pm Carmichael:

You can hear Todd Rundgren's influence all over this.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:29pm Brian in UK:

@RR aint this strange I saw McCoy about five years back and he barely played one hour. I left feeling short changed. I also left feeling short but you cannot help the genes.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Making a decision is sometimes hard.
Avatar Wed. 9/18/13 1:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Brian: He may be aging finally? I also too often tell of seeing Eddie Harris have so much Music in him he shamed the pick-up drummer by telling him to lay out, & just clacking the keys to his sax percussively. Then he got sick - soldiered on - much diminished - soon dead.
- McCoy was amazing that night I speak of - played as a Trio.

- I believe McCoy was w/ Avery Sharpe on bass and Aaron Scott on drums that time I speak of - & it was like - intense Islamic Prayer - spiritual food; that same day/night in L.A. also saw Charlie Haden's Quartet West do a free show - so, memorable...
