![]() |
![]() Let me know when the lemonade is getting hard. |
![]() |
![]() That's a different Mike, isn't it? Or is that some primo product placement, UM? |
![]() |
![]() Wake up and smell the cacophony! |
![]() |
![]() Hi, @pss! |

![]() |
![]() Yay, @hyde! The pleasure is all ours. |

![]() |
![]() Hi Jeffs and ever'body |
![]() |
![]() Yello, @duke! |
![]() |
![]() That Roscoe cut always puts us in a good mood, for sure. Also helping the mood: saw news of this RM reissue today -- www.chicagoreader.com... |

Shaun:
Morning, America (and Jeff). Bigup, Yasiin Bey. |
![]() |
![]() Srsly @Shaun. Talk about walking the walk. |
![]() |
![]() Back in a bit. Kicking ass as usual, Jeff. |
![]() |
![]() @Jeff wow, that Roscoe Mitchell reissue sounds fantastic! thanks for the tip. |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, @hyde. Knew of the Sackville original (which had come out on CD, tho I didn't get it) but this adds a ton of unreleased stuff. George Lewis! |
![]() |
![]() Thanks, @UM. God knows we'll keep the seat warm for you. |
![]() |
![]() this be happening.... |
![]() |
![]() @northguineahills: now 'tis! |
![]() |
![]() Anyone else hearing some annoying clicking? |
![]() |
![]() Sounds like electrical interference, mebbe? |
![]() |
![]() yeah, i heard the clicking a bit. |
![]() |
![]() I've had that problem with discs recorded on a CD drive that was failing. |
![]() |
![]() @ps simon, yeah, me too. that seems like that's what it was. |
![]() |
![]() Thanks, guys. Might have to revisit that CD... |
![]() |
![]() I heard the clicking in the Taborn piece. |
![]() |
![]() Well, none of y'all need your ears checked, that's for sure. |
![]() |
![]() What it is! |
![]() |
![]() Please replay the annoying clicking. I missed all that. |
![]() |
![]() I wonder if it would be fun to start a jug band that covered free jazz comps. Y'know, jug, kazoo, slide whistle, washboard and washtub bass? |
![]() |
![]() Peace be with you, Right @Rev. |
![]() |
![]() I think Ken Vandermark might be with you, @pss. www.discogs.com... |
![]() |
![]() @pacific standard simon i love this idea. go for it! |
![]() |
![]() YESSS, P.S.Simon. A JUG ORCHESTRA covering any Cecil Taylor solo would be prime strangeness. |

Shaun:
Marlene Dietrich played the saw on the Berlin stage and later used it to entertain troops during World War II.[1][17] |
![]() |
Mon. 7/8/13 12:59pm
Shaun:
Sorry. Fell down the wiki hole and just found that. |
![]() |
![]() @Shaun there's a snippet her playing the saw on youtube: www.youtube.com... |
![]() |
![]() afternoon, all! bit delayed but happy to be here! |
![]() |
![]() Happy to have you, @listener james! There might be some seats toward the front... |
![]() |
![]() There's no disputing Vandermark's song choices, but the instrumentation isn't OUT enough. And, yes, musical saw would be nice, too. Also conch shell. Ocarina. Cigar box banjo? |
![]() |
Mon. 7/8/13 1:09pm
Shaun:
Cheers @hyde. Definitely claiming dibs on saw in the Jug Ensemble of WFMU. |
![]() |
![]() can i play a comb and a piece of paper? |
![]() |
Mon. 7/8/13 1:11pm
Shaun:
OK, if saw's gone I'll take nose-flute and spoons. |
![]() |
![]() I call spoons. |
![]() |
![]() DANG. |
![]() |
Mon. 7/8/13 1:12pm
Shaun:
@hyde "Just stand there and double the kazoo". |
![]() |
![]() [raises hand] I'll do wobble-board. |
![]() |
![]() @pss: Agreed re Vandermark. In some ways, it's a curious (if entirely laudable) mission. Have you checked out any of Rova's reworkings of Ascension? |
![]() |
Mon. 7/8/13 1:16pm
Shaun:
@Jeff One nose-flute (hardly used). |
![]() |
![]() Oi. Count the Jevvs in for "hand claps." |
![]() |
![]() @Shaun: pass. |
![]() |
![]() I haven't heard that, but it sounds like fertile ground for new seeds. |
![]() |
![]() Rhythm pole for me. |

@Jeff I never had Hemingway's knack for pathos. |
![]() |
![]() [lone ranger on trigger...] |
![]() |
![]() @Shaun Binoculars for sale - formerly owned by Roland Kirk. |
![]() |
![]() @pss: This column over at Point of Depature piqued my interest in the Rova project: pointofdeparture.org... |
![]() |
![]() Joe Venuti used to send Wingy Manone ONE glove for his birthday. |

Shaun:
Maiden Voyage was the record took my jazz cherry. True (dull) story. |
![]() |
![]() Thanks, Jeff -- I'll read up on it! |
![]() |
![]() I took a class with Marion Brown one semester at Umass in the 80's! |
![]() |
![]() @pss: re Venuti/Manone, wiki has it as a cufflink? |
![]() |
![]() @Shaun: the whole run of 60s Blue Notes was pretty much my jazz 101. |
![]() |
![]() @hyde: !!! - more pleez. How was? |
![]() |
![]() @pss: googling around, it seems there's even more at PoD re Rova/Ascension, mostly interviews with bandmembers. |
![]() |
![]() @Jeff it was pretty cool. He was a bit of an oddball professor and was kind of a reticent lecturer, but he was really interesting. I also had a class with Archie Shepp there, who I'm proud to say actually gave me a really good grade on a 25 page final paper I wrote on the "African origins of Avant Garde Jazz"... |
![]() |
![]() @Jeff - You're right about the cufflink -- I misremembered. |
![]() |
![]() My first jazz record was Stan Getz at The Shrine (father's record), but what really opened my eyes was Frank Zappa's "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque", and an Impulse! Records 3-record set. |
![]() |
![]() I'm not sure what my first jazz record was. I do remember reading a lot of Downbeat in the library as a kid and finding some stuff that way. I also don't really know when I started on more "out' jazz, but I did somehow see the Arkestra play at Mass Art when I was in high school.... |

Shaun:
@pss I'd say it was Tony Williams' up on that ride in Maiden Voyage playing anything but ten-to-ten that hipped me but Jeff will just play his jazz trance clip at me ;) |
![]() |
![]() @hyde: That Shepp grade is pride-worthy! Geez. I recall being scared shitless as an undergrad in a class taught by poet (and Trane liner note writer) Michael S. Harper. We read (and discussed!) his own poetry. |
![]() |
![]() @shaun: as long as you don't wake a man who's in a jazz trance... |

dc pat:
<just butting in to say>My first jazz ablum was Brilliant Corners. I'd read On the Road and wanted to know what "bop" sounded like. Still one of my favorite ablums. </just butting out...> |
![]() |
![]() @dc pat: Welcome! Butt in any time! |
![]() |
![]() For me, it was SATCH PLAYS FATS, overheard on my college radio station's jazz programming (which began at midnight). |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, props to the public library systems of America -- mine had a lot Ornette, Coltrane, Davis, etc. and nobody else wanted to check them out. |
![]() |
![]() @Jeff. you want terrified? after i got the grade, before one of the last classes I got REALLY stoned 'cause I had already gotten my grade and then I went into class and Archie Shepp ASKED ME TO READ IT TO THE CLASS. what a disaster. I was completely nervous and baked and totally flubbed the whole thing. D'oh. |
![]() |
![]() @pss ditto. I got great jazz stuff on vinyl out of the local library as a kid. I remember grabbing that early Ornette stuff from there. |
![]() |
![]() fmu was actually my gateway to jazz, via many different djs, present company and doug included. so much more to learn and hear, and every week's a new semester! |
![]() |
![]() Is this an homage to Yakima Canutt? |
![]() |
![]() So which instrument do you want in the Destination:Out jazz jug band, Uncle Michael? |
![]() |
![]() @UM: even though I'm guessing (hoping?) that's a rhetorical question, I do believe it's an ode to the city itself. That album is something of an homage to family road trips Friedlander took as a tyke, iirc. |
![]() |
![]() @hyde: did Shepp have to talk you down? Or up? |
![]() |
![]() Hmmm...I want to play Walter Brennan's doohickey. |
![]() |
![]() Jaw harp? |
![]() |
![]() Ocarina! |
![]() |
![]() @Jeff Shepp basically told me to try and chill out when I was partway into reading. Sigh. |
![]() |
![]() @hyde - HAH -- like Shepp never recorded anything while he was baked! |
![]() |
![]() @pacific standard simon the greatest irony of my anecdote is that Shepp generally came into class smelling like weed |
![]() |
![]() If this is free jazz, though, we may have to list the ocarina in the liner notes as "sweet potato". |
![]() |
![]() I once heard a set on Pacifica radio DJ'd by John Zorn in which he played some kind of amazing Indian jazz with a lead on conch shell (cut off end blown into like a trumpet, apparently). |
![]() |
![]() great show. thanks! |
![]() |
![]() We're going over, folks; buckle up. |
![]() |
![]() You're welcome, @hyde! Thanks for listening and commenting and telling great stories... |
![]() |
![]() Got back just in time. |
![]() |
![]() Thanks Jeffs! |
![]() |
![]() great show...couldn't comment because I had to write a report to justify my existence for another year |
![]() |
![]() @duke! @northguineahills! Thanks so much! |

Cheers Jeff. |
![]() |
![]() happy to have caught the bulk of this fine program; looking forward to hitting the archive for the 1st hour! thanks!! |
![]() |
![]() @duke: yr existence needs no justification here, of course. @Shaun! Take care! Hope to see you next time... |
![]() |
![]() I wish I could have listened harder! See you all... |
![]() |
![]() @ljfw: We're happy you're happy! So long and see you on the chat boards... |
![]() |
![]() @UM: you're only as hard as yr lemonade? |
