C'mon in, Carmichael! I'm afraid the lemonade's getting warm...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 11:50am Uncle Michael:

Let me know when the lemonade is getting hard.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 11:54am Jeff Golick:

That's a different Mike, isn't it? Or is that some primo product placement, UM?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:01pm pacific standard simon:

Wake up and smell the cacophony!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:02pm Jeff Golick:

Hi, @pss!

Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:13pm Jeff Golick:

That Roscoe cut always puts us in a good mood, for sure.
Also helping the mood: saw news of this RM reissue today -- www.chicagoreader.com...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:14pm holland oats:

ah cool - i have a dream, if only i had a dollar
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:15pm Shaun:

Morning, America (and Jeff). Bigup, Yasiin Bey.

Srsly @Shaun. Talk about walking the walk.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:25pm Uncle Michael:

Back in a bit. Kicking ass as usual, Jeff.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:26pm hyde:

@Jeff wow, that Roscoe Mitchell reissue sounds fantastic! thanks for the tip.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:29pm Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @hyde. Knew of the Sackville original (which had come out on CD, tho I didn't get it) but this adds a ton of unreleased stuff. George Lewis!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:30pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @UM. God knows we'll keep the seat warm for you.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:32pm northguineahills:

this be happening....
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:34pm Jeff Golick:

@northguineahills: now 'tis!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:35pm Jeff Golick:

Anyone else hearing some annoying clicking?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:35pm Jeff Golick:

Sounds like electrical interference, mebbe?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:36pm hyde:

yeah, i heard the clicking a bit.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:38pm pacific standard simon:

I've had that problem with discs recorded on a CD drive that was failing.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:40pm hyde:

@ps simon, yeah, me too. that seems like that's what it was.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:41pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, guys. Might have to revisit that CD...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:44pm northguineahills:

I heard the clicking in the Taborn piece.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:47pm Jeff Golick:

Well, none of y'all need your ears checked, that's for sure.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:48pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

What it is!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:49pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Please replay the annoying clicking. I missed all that.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:49pm pacific standard simon:

I wonder if it would be fun to start a jug band that covered free jazz comps. Y'know, jug, kazoo, slide whistle, washboard and washtub bass?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:50pm Jeff Golick:

Peace be with you, Right @Rev.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:54pm Jeff Golick:

I think Ken Vandermark might be with you, @pss.

www.discogs.com...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:54pm hyde:

@pacific standard simon i love this idea. go for it!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

YESSS, P.S.Simon. A JUG ORCHESTRA covering any Cecil Taylor solo would be prime strangeness.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:59pm Shaun:

Marlene Dietrich played the saw on the Berlin stage and later used it to entertain troops during World War II.[1][17]
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 12:59pm Shaun:

Sorry. Fell down the wiki hole and just found that.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:04pm hyde:

@Shaun there's a snippet her playing the saw on youtube: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:04pm listener james from westwood:

afternoon, all! bit delayed but happy to be here!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:05pm Jeff Golick:

Happy to have you, @listener james! There might be some seats toward the front...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:08pm pacific standard simon:

There's no disputing Vandermark's song choices, but the instrumentation isn't OUT enough. And, yes, musical saw would be nice, too. Also conch shell. Ocarina. Cigar box banjo?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:09pm Shaun:

Cheers @hyde. Definitely claiming dibs on saw in the Jug Ensemble of WFMU.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:11pm hyde:

can i play a comb and a piece of paper?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:11pm Shaun:

OK, if saw's gone I'll take nose-flute and spoons.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:11pm Jeff Golick:

I call spoons.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:12pm Jeff Golick:

DANG.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:12pm Shaun:

@hyde "Just stand there and double the kazoo".
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:13pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[raises hand] I'll do wobble-board.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:13pm Jeff Golick:

@pss: Agreed re Vandermark. In some ways, it's a curious (if entirely laudable) mission. Have you checked out any of Rova's reworkings of Ascension?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:16pm Shaun:

@Jeff One nose-flute (hardly used).
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:16pm Jeff Golick:

Oi. Count the Jevvs in for "hand claps."
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:17pm Jeff Golick:

@Shaun: pass.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:17pm pacific standard simon:

I haven't heard that, but it sounds like fertile ground for new seeds.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:18pm pacific standard simon:

Rhythm pole for me.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:19pm Shaun:

@Jeff I never had Hemingway's knack for pathos.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[lone ranger on trigger...]
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:21pm pacific standard simon:

@Shaun Binoculars for sale - formerly owned by Roland Kirk.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:23pm Jeff Golick:

@pss: This column over at Point of Depature piqued my interest in the Rova project: pointofdeparture.org...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:24pm pacific standard simon:

Joe Venuti used to send Wingy Manone ONE glove for his birthday.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:24pm Shaun:

Maiden Voyage was the record took my jazz cherry. True (dull) story.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:26pm pacific standard simon:

Thanks, Jeff -- I'll read up on it!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:34pm hyde:

I took a class with Marion Brown one semester at Umass in the 80's!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:35pm Jeff Golick:

@pss: re Venuti/Manone, wiki has it as a cufflink?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:36pm Jeff Golick:

@Shaun: the whole run of 60s Blue Notes was pretty much my jazz 101.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:37pm Jeff Golick:

@hyde: !!! - more pleez. How was?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:37pm Jeff Golick:

@pss: googling around, it seems there's even more at PoD re Rova/Ascension, mostly interviews with bandmembers.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:41pm hyde:

@Jeff it was pretty cool. He was a bit of an oddball professor and was kind of a reticent lecturer, but he was really interesting. I also had a class with Archie Shepp there, who I'm proud to say actually gave me a really good grade on a 25 page final paper I wrote on the "African origins of Avant Garde Jazz"...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:44pm pacific standard simon:

@Jeff - You're right about the cufflink -- I misremembered.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 1:59pm pacific standard simon:

My first jazz record was Stan Getz at The Shrine (father's record), but what really opened my eyes was Frank Zappa's "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque", and an Impulse! Records 3-record set.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:04pm hyde:

I'm not sure what my first jazz record was. I do remember reading a lot of Downbeat in the library as a kid and finding some stuff that way. I also don't really know when I started on more "out' jazz, but I did somehow see the Arkestra play at Mass Art when I was in high school....
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:05pm Shaun:

@pss I'd say it was Tony Williams' up on that ride in Maiden Voyage playing anything but ten-to-ten that hipped me but Jeff will just play his jazz trance clip at me ;)
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:09pm Jeff Golick:

@hyde: That Shepp grade is pride-worthy! Geez. I recall being scared shitless as an undergrad in a class taught by poet (and Trane liner note writer) Michael S. Harper. We read (and discussed!) his own poetry.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:10pm Jeff Golick:

@shaun: as long as you don't wake a man who's in a jazz trance...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:10pm dc pat:

<just butting in to say>My first jazz ablum was Brilliant Corners. I'd read On the Road and wanted to know what "bop" sounded like. Still one of my favorite ablums. </just butting out...>
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:11pm Jeff Golick:

@dc pat: Welcome! Butt in any time!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:12pm Jeff Golick:

For me, it was SATCH PLAYS FATS, overheard on my college radio station's jazz programming (which began at midnight).
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:13pm pacific standard simon:

Yeah, props to the public library systems of America -- mine had a lot Ornette, Coltrane, Davis, etc. and nobody else wanted to check them out.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:14pm hyde:

@Jeff. you want terrified? after i got the grade, before one of the last classes I got REALLY stoned 'cause I had already gotten my grade and then I went into class and Archie Shepp ASKED ME TO READ IT TO THE CLASS. what a disaster. I was completely nervous and baked and totally flubbed the whole thing. D'oh.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:16pm hyde:

@pss ditto. I got great jazz stuff on vinyl out of the local library as a kid. I remember grabbing that early Ornette stuff from there.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:20pm listener james from westwood:

fmu was actually my gateway to jazz, via many different djs, present company and doug included. so much more to learn and hear, and every week's a new semester!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

Is this an homage to Yakima Canutt?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:23pm pacific standard simon:

So which instrument do you want in the Destination:Out jazz jug band, Uncle Michael?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:27pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: even though I'm guessing (hoping?) that's a rhetorical question, I do believe it's an ode to the city itself. That album is something of an homage to family road trips Friedlander took as a tyke, iirc.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:27pm Jeff Golick:

@hyde: did Shepp have to talk you down? Or up?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

Hmmm...I want to play Walter Brennan's doohickey.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:30pm pacific standard simon:

Jaw harp?
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:31pm Uncle Michael:

Ocarina!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:31pm hyde:

@Jeff Shepp basically told me to try and chill out when I was partway into reading. Sigh.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:32pm pacific standard simon:

@hyde - HAH -- like Shepp never recorded anything while he was baked!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:34pm hyde:

@pacific standard simon the greatest irony of my anecdote is that Shepp generally came into class smelling like weed
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:35pm pacific standard simon:

If this is free jazz, though, we may have to list the ocarina in the liner notes as "sweet potato".
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:49pm pacific standard simon:

I once heard a set on Pacifica radio DJ'd by John Zorn in which he played some kind of amazing Indian jazz with a lead on conch shell (cut off end blown into like a trumpet, apparently).
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:56pm hyde:

great show. thanks!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:56pm Jeff Golick:

We're going over, folks; buckle up.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 2:59pm Jeff Golick:

You're welcome, @hyde! Thanks for listening and commenting and telling great stories...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:00pm northguineahills:

Got back just in time.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:01pm northguineahills:

Thanks Jeffs!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:01pm duke:

great show...couldn't comment because I had to write a report to justify my existence for another year
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:03pm Jeff Golick:

@duke! @northguineahills! Thanks so much!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:03pm Shaun:

Cheers Jeff.
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:04pm listener james from westwood:

happy to have caught the bulk of this fine program; looking forward to hitting the archive for the 1st hour! thanks!!
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:04pm Jeff Golick:

@duke: yr existence needs no justification here, of course.

@Shaun! Take care! Hope to see you next time...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:07pm Uncle Michael:

I wish I could have listened harder! See you all...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:07pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: We're happy you're happy! So long and see you on the chat boards...
Avatar Mon. 7/8/13 3:08pm Jeff Golick:
