@glenn: that's why foodies are called for. Some festivals akin to the Japanese "RAW Food" one where chefs have to go into nature to get their ingredients, only escargot-themed, and voila, problem solved. The state just needs to provide cooking and eating facilities, and maybe a couple of tons of garlic butter.

Not a lotta invertebrate zoological gifs out there. Here's some bioluminescence in a comb jelly -- oo ah http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lisjoaOlVl1qdaaw6o1_500.gif

Good morning listening.

G,

Don't underestimate Caryn knowledgeable power which extends even to those obscure student short films from Turkey that were burned by the religious state when they were in post-production back in the 60's.

Ken that story of NYE 81' is great. Last night I was sick and read about Emma Goldman and Anarchism ad nauseam. Go Ken!

Don McLean has very specific instructions on the pronunciation of his name in his tour rider

thanks!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/13 11:45am Caryn:

@KP: heh. Yeah, it is the type of film that Andy Breckman would probably make Don McLean watch. And cackle while doing it.

Ken, I'm reading this story as Jack speaks...LCD, May, 94..always loved it...

Your gifs are outstanding today Ken. Sorry to hear about your aunt.
Avatar    Wed. 4/17/13 11:46am Rich in Washington:

American Pie is a very silly, maudlin song.
It's right up there with Harry Chapin's Taxi and Billy Joel's Piano Man.
Avatar    Wed. 4/17/13 11:46am Rich in Washington:

The worst version, right behind McLean's is Madonna's.
The best, in my opinion, is done by The Brady Bunch.
  Wed. 4/17/13 11:47am Marie:

It's like the song of a drunk.
Avatar Wed. 4/17/13 11:47am Mark S:

Harry Chapins "Cat's in the Cradle" is much more maudlin

Go Andy!
Avatar Wed. 4/17/13 11:49am Caryn:

Don McLean performed at Glastonbury in 2011. I did wonder what his set was like? Surely, the audience was like, "okay, he played American Pie, we can go to the other stage now."
Avatar Wed. 4/17/13 11:49am G:

it's on the written record that the engineer who created the commercially-released version of American Pie in 71 had to splice it together from tons of takes, moment by moment, because McLean had just recently read a negative review of his singing, and was doing all kinds of weird things to change his singing up that made it impossible to use much of his performance without having to clip something out and replace it with something from another take. Funfun.

Cat Stevens' "If you Want to Sing Out" is much more Harold & Maudlin
  Wed. 4/17/13 11:52am Marie:

That song always made me sad when I was little. But it seemed kind of epic.
Avatar    Wed. 4/17/13 11:52am KP:

Avatar    Wed. 4/17/13 11:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think the Don McLean album (there's more than 1?) has definite virtues (I kinda like singersongwriteryguitarist stuff). Artists being insecure - &/or - unpleasant is not news.
- Doesn't make Andy wrong, tho'. : )

Avatar    Wed. 4/17/13 11:56am Rich in Washington:

@Mark S: You are correct. Cat's in the Cradle is indeed hideously maudlin.
Other candidates: henry Gross' Shannon; Michael Murphey's Wildfire.
