I guess you'll be playing Can on today's show.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:31am bobdc:

Yeah, that's what I thought when I saw the German writing in the picture. Gefullte Weinblatter!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:32am Doug Schulkind:

You'll surely hear a certain can-do attitude.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:50am glenn:

those don't look like blue sparkle ludwigs.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:54am Uncle Michael:

I'm working on some Snakpak-based roto toms.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:55am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

I think you mean Snakpak-based roto toms®
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

Warm mornings to you, ndbob!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:57am Uncle Michael:

No, Doug. I have a really good attorney.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

Hey glenn, how the hell did you know I had a blue sparkle Ludwig set? Really! (with a Slingerland snare)
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:01am Uncle Michael:

How's everyone this morning?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:03am Van in DC:

*sneaking in late , waves hi*
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:03am glenn:

you told me in an email, and i have a good memory.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:04am glenn:

at least for trivial stuff i have a good memory.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of "waves hi," Van, later in the show I shall play an amazing blue-eyed soul track by a Scottish belter called "The Waves Are High Today (and So Am I)"
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:05am Doug Schulkind:

OK glenn, but what about the transponder I found in my back molar? Huh? HUH?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:05am ndbob:

pretty good Michael - I can see the sidewalk in from of my apartment for the first time in months:)
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:05am glenn:

but can i remember where my pants are?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:06am glenn:

transponder huh? you'll have to ask bryce about that.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael emailed me sweetly to inform me of my over-modulated mic. What a gentleman. Of course, you can always shame me publicly. I can take it.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:11am dchahahahahahaha:

dang. All that Hank ## talk we had yesterday and I miss Hank I today! shoot.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:13am dchahahahahahaha:

man, this Speck & Doyle is SUUUUUUURe hitting the spot.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:14am Uncle Michael:

Fine...you'd think after nearly 30 years of this, you'd have your shit together. How hard can it be?
  Fri. 4/5/13 9:14am Paul Sherratt:

Can't stop but will be listening. Mon. Sonnier reminds me that the tv advert for a directory enquiry firm is using Nolan Cormier's deranged ' Hee Haw Breakdown ' to grab the viewers' attention. Works too !
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:14am dchahahahahahaha:

sounds slightly like Charlie Feathers.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Brother Paul Sherratt, you are workin' too dang hard!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:17am Uncle Michael:

Maybe I need to find a happy medium.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:19am glenn:

one man's over modulation is another man's joyful ecstasy at bringing hi s followers so many great tunes. p.s. can i hear some johnny burnette?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:19am dchahahahahahaha:

holy crap Doug, I've never starred a whole set before--you're 6 for 6 at the moment....DON'T screw up...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:20am dchahahahahahaha:

I second glenn's request...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:20am Uncle Michael:

Please don't play "Clown Shoes."
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Dig the label logo for the Speck & Doyle rekkid: rcs-discography.com...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:21am dchahahahahahaha:

dang, good group name Syrup Bucket
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

@dchahahahahahaha
Even with an over-modulated mic. I'm touched.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:23am glenn:

well, it is maple syrup time, as i remember with mixed emotions from my childhood.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:25am still b/p:

Wondering if today's promised raw raunchy bit of blues is r&r musically or lyrically. My eyebrows still haven't recovered since Irwin, I think it was, played a double wow of an explicit blues number with web-only impunity in the day-after-Sandy situation.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn 'n' dchahahahahahaha
Johnny Burnette would be great, but he refused to come out of the bathroom and play.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:26am Uncle Michael:

Blaze has a bit of Prine to him.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:27am duke:

I heard this Blaze Foley song by John Prine. I can see it's a natural for Prine. He sounds a bit like John Prine.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:27am Uncle Michael:

jinx
  Fri. 4/5/13 9:28am Paul Sherratt:

This glorious Blaze Foley reminds me that after a 14 year wait there is a new Terry Allen album out ...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:28am glenn:

hmmm. what's the name for a doctor who specializes in eye brows?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:28am Uncle Michael:

"Groucho"
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:28am duke:

@UM great minds think alike or idiots agree or something like that
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:29am glenn:

i only have lubbock on everything, but maybe i need more terry allen.
  Fri. 4/5/13 9:31am Paul Sherratt:

glenn, you need all of Terry Allen !
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
The raw raunch will appear later in the broadcast.

@Paul Sherratt
Thank you for introducing me to Terry Allen (and so much more)

Blaze Foley used to kid that he was the bastard child of Red Foley and Blaze Starr.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:32am still b/p:

Or a Kahlopodist.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:33am glenn:

mind like a steel trap, that s b/p. kahlopodist it is.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:38am thedunkel:

Morning drummer and morn' er'body!
  Fri. 4/5/13 9:38am earrie:

The drum kit from a tinphony. Bah dum bump.
Good morning.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

thedunkel is thefunkel!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for lobing that comment into the mix, earrie!
  Fri. 4/5/13 9:44am earrie:

It is quite the kit. Needs a musician.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:44am Michael:

Perfect for my allergies today!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:44am dchahahahahahaha:

you follow A La Salud with Nina Hagen's Hatchi Waldera
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:45am Van in DC:

@Doug at 9:39 - I hear what you did there
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:45am dchahahahahahaha:

"you SHOULD follow..."
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
You hear all and know all.

@dchahahahahahaha
I liked it better as a command. You need to be more assertive!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:50am duke:

Perhaps this is the guy who plays those cans www.wellpromo.com...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:51am glenn:

you WILL tell johnny burnette to get his bony ass out of the bathroom. how much time does he really need to spend combing the 5 strands of hair he has left anyway?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:51am Hugo:

I certainly agree about Terry Allen. I checked my online sources and found a recording of a BBC radio programme from 1996. I wonder whose programme that might have been? (rhetorical)
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:52am dchahahahahahaha:

say, you're right...I should be more assertive...sorry!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:52am Uncle Michael:

Johnny's just looking for reverb.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:52am dchahahahahahaha:

ol' Johnny's LOOOOOOng gone...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:55am Uncle Michael:

His bathroom reverb remains.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 9:55am Uncle Michael:

So yesterday...I go to the carneceria for tacos. I'm usually the only Anglo in there. The tv's on and there's this fascinating documentary on but I don't speak Spanish. I made enough of a mental note to enable delayed googling. Turns out the subject of the film was German Valdes, also known as Tin Tan. Now I'm on a quest for recordings.
  Fri. 4/5/13 9:57am earrie:

Hello Paul, twas only the other day I was reading this.....
www.netrhythms.co.uk...
Fri. 4/5/13 10:03am Bruce in Boston:

But Doug I'm visiting B'klyn Saturday ...I fondly remember Record Mart...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:03am Brian in UK:

The Terry Allen review ends '38 years on from that first album, while he may have been born in Kansas, this serves a timely reminder that Allen remains arguably the finest Texas troubadour of outlaw country.'
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Bruce in Boston
Give Brooklyn a kiss for me.

Halloooo, Brian in UK!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Things are going to take an interesting turn, next...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:06am Brian in UK:

Doug, That Easterly wind doth blow, cold as a witchs tit. Well both of them.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:10am ndbob:

this is good Doug - I've never seen a collection of Korean 78s
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

ndbob: www.sublimefrequencies.com...

There, now you have.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:11am Hugo:

Another naturalized Texas troubadour is Tom Russell. Defintely a contender!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:12am Uncle Michael:

Sometimes I'll hear music that's unfamiliar to my ear and I realize that if I try to imagine what this music was used for in its original context, I might well be wrong.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

@earrie
Love the baby drummer snap!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:15am duke:

Kazutoki Umezu & Kim Suk-Chul thing is pretty interesting - free jazz meets traditional Korean music.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:16am Brian in UK:

Hugo I revisited John Peel's site recently The Space. They are putting some interesting subjects on there that you might like/bring back memories.

Has everyone seen this tyke? (save the youtube for later) www.youtube.com...
  Fri. 4/5/13 10:16am earrie:

@Doug Cute, eh? It led to a search trail of balloon drums (skins for those tin cans and different lengths of cardboard tubes). All-ages drumming.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Looks like that Germán Valdés doc is on YouTube.

@duke
That is EXACTLY what this is! Got it at the incomparable Inconstant Sol blog, here:
inconstantsol.blogspot.com...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:18am Uncle Michael:

@Doug: Yeah, I saw that it was there. Need to see if there's a subtitled version.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:20am Uncle Michael:

If I go for 30 minutes without commenting during the show, it will be because I've decided to try getting my daily pedal in during the show. But remember...I'll be able to read everything you all say when I get back to the keyboard.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

@UM
Can't you just drag and drop YouTube into Google Translate? (Only half-kidding.)
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:21am duke:

@Uncle Michael We'll try and behave while you're gone
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:25am Brian in UK:

Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:26am Hugo:

Just dropping by for a quick spell.
Also checking in to see what condition my condition etc etc.
Also: happy birthday Evan Parker.

Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:37am dchahahahahahaha:

ho boy, this Eric Dolphy is a good'n...
Fri. 4/5/13 10:38am Bruce in Boston:

god bless Dolphy
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:39am glenn:

in fact, it's so awesome that not even kenny rogers, that hump of misery, could completely fuck it up.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Especially during this Donald Byrd solo, this perfomance has a very "Sketches of Spain" sound to it. Like like like like!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:41am Jeff Golick:

If I may: next new D:O Radio show falls on Richard Davis' bday, so you can expect more Dolphy then, too, if you'd care to come by on 4/15.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Hope your show won't be too taxing. Blerg!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:43am glenn:

4/15? i have enough trouble with 4/4.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

This is set is only just getting started. It ends with Ornette Coleman, and that's four songs away.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 10:53am Jeff Golick:

It's those jazz robots, talking Dolphy. Not one of the better jazz robot vids, but...y'know...so killing, man.

I can highly recommend getting Dolphy-robicized.

What did I miss?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:14am Uncle Michael:

@glenn, The Newbury is way better than the 1st Edition. I played the 2012, Tom Jones version on my show last night.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:18am Brian in UK:

Doug, have you posted Doudou No2 (great title)
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:19am Hugo:

True, he's absolutely adorable. We forgive him everything (including trying to grab food from the dining table).
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:20am duke:

Damn! I got a phone call and missed the Dolphy to Coleman segment. This work stuff is cutting into my listening.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
You have a filthy mind! It's Doudou No. 2, not Doo doo = Number Two
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:23am Hugo:

One should never let work interfere with one's listening habits.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
I'm sorry, but you'll have to present me with a note from your boss stating your reason for missing the show.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:24am Brian in UK:

Doug that is true but it was a serious question posed in a grubby manner.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:27am dchahahahahahaha:

fekkin BBC, can't watch anything on their site in the US.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:28am Uncle Michael:

@dc...oh yes you can...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian, by posted do you mean the link? The answer is no, but it will be in my next Mining the Audio Motherlode (along with the soundtrack to "Baby Doll.")
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:28am duke:

@doug perhaps you could provide me with a note saying I'm not to be disturbed from 9:00-12:00 on Fridays
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:29am Uncle Michael:

Look here: addons.mozilla.org...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

(The link at Global Groove is dead, so I found this other one that works.)
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:30am Uncle Michael:

Personally, I *am* to be disturbed from 9-12. And I want to be left alone while it's occurring.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:30am Brian in UK:

COOL, finally a film featuring Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers..
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

@dchahahahahahahaha
I get Tunnel Bear ($4.99 a month) to watch UK stuff. You can purchase it for a month, than suspend it until the next time you want to watch something. I used it to watch the Olympics on the BBC and could have used it to watch Downton Abbey while it was airing in the UK.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
I can provide you with several notes. All in a minor key, if that's OK.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:32am dchahahahahahaha:

huh. Thanks for the tips Doug and Uncle!

Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

OK friends, if you gotta pee, go now. You don't want to miss the opening track (in about 6 minutes) of the next set.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:37am Alex In Illinois:

Hey this one sounds familiar! Yes, I bought this record way back in the 1980's. It is a Bill Laswell thang, with Steve Toure playing the conch shells.

Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:38am Ike:

Hey there. In Ken's Ask Me Anything/State of the Station on Wed., someone asked if the alt. streams will ever have Flash streams and he said probably not! Nobody noted that GtDR actually DOES have a Flash stream. I would have commented but wasn't able to listen live.
  Fri. 4/5/13 11:39am earrie:

@Ike Have you tried alternatives? (Flash cookies are just insidious lil buggers.)
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:40am Uncle Michael:

Googling "good vibrations" has some useless and predictable results. Googling "good vibrations movie" has some *interesting* results.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:42am glenn:

hmmm. maybe doug has a link to micky newbury downloads.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:43am Brian in UK:

I watched some interview type bits on Utube recently with Steve Stein. He is so self sffacing and modest. Lovely man.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:44am Brian in UK:

@UM this site always gives quality reviews.
www.independent.co.uk...
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:44am Ike:

Earrie, say what? No comprendo. I don't require Flash web streams myself. But others do. I was just pointing out that maybe the useful GtDR Flash needs more linking and pimping out.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:46am Uncle Michael:

@Brian: Thanks. Yeah...I want to watch that. I'd like to have it on my tablet for my trip.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:50am Shaun:

YEAHJHH, logged in to fav this motherfucker.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

That may be the baddest ass track i've ever spun.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:51am Shaun:

A'ternoon.
  Fri. 4/5/13 11:51am earrie:

@Ike It's creepy fucker technology. Eg. 2009 paper "flash cookies and privacy II"
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:51am Uncle Michael:

I'm doing a gut-check. Would *I* play that? hmmm
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:52am duke:

Definitely badass. He make R. L. Burnside look like a Sunday school teacher
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:52am Uncle Michael:

This Womack is pretty sweet. Is this Muscle Shoals?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:52am Brian in UK:

Hey Shaun it ain't over 'till John Lee plays out.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:54am ndbob:

nice version here!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

This is Judy's reworking of Otis Redding's "Mister Pitiful." And YES, Uncle Michael, you big-earred feller—a Muscle Shoals number!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:54am Shaun:

AGAIN, AGAIN! /teletubby
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:54am Van in DC:

Falafel calls, stomach growls, I am entranced and must obey. Or wither away. So, toodles and tanks for a show so full of CAN!

Happy weekend all!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:55am Brian in UK:

I'm still batheing in Rev Charlie Jackson's record what I bought recently. Ah the smell of it. Notes by the sainted Kevin Nutt.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:57am duke:

Thanks again Doug!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:57am Brian in UK:

PS This is where I got it. Personal service Only outlet for 50 Miles of Elbow Room out side of the US, I believe.

Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:57am Uncle Michael:

More people need to explore mobile options for GTDR. There's no need to go without.

You all know that there's a fully functional stream on TuneIn, among the other options, yes?
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:58am Ike:

Well, Ken rightly pointed out that Flash is on its way out and that maybe an HTML5 player is in the cards for all streams eventually. This kind of in-browser player is necessary for some listeners with evil locked-down office puters.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 11:59am ndbob:

@MIchael - yep - I use TuneIn all the time to listen to WFMU shows
  Fri. 4/5/13 12:00pm earrie:

If not office wifi, tethering your mobile to your network connection is also something to explore.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:00pm Michael:

Love the tune and Get Smart too!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:00pm Shaun:

Yeeah, I listen through the tunein app. Reports itself as 'Duane' and holds up the Disco Sounds LP but sounds great.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:00pm Brian in UK:

@UM Jeff Moore mentioned TuneIn to me when I enquired earlier in the year.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:01pm Alex In Illinois:

I often have to listen to the first few numbers of Give The Drummer Some using the WFMU app on my droid phone. Doug told me about that app and the molar implant, but my dental insurance would not cover the costs installation of the latter, so I went with the droid app.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:01pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Alex!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:02pm Michael:

Yes, excellent tunes this morning!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:02pm Uncle Michael:

This was a good show. I'm not just *saying* that.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:03pm Uncle Michael:

I get that testicle reference.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:03pm glenn:

Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:03pm Brian in UK:

@Shaun solid gold chain leaves green mark.

Better get my Rufus Thomas shoes on. Love you, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:04pm Uncle Michael:

@glenn, he'd still have two left.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:04pm northguineahills:

Superb set, forgot to check in. Been here since Kenyon Hopkins.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:05pm Alex In Illinois:

I wonder if the old Shlittz Malt Liquor add with Rufus THomas is available on the web anywhere like YouTube.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:05pm Brian in UK:

Two left test tickles
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

See all of you glorious drumheads down the road...down the road...down the road apiece.
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:05pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:06pm Doug Schulkind:

En Gee Aiche!
Avatar Fri. 4/5/13 12:06pm Shaun:
