Second Cousin by the Groovies nails it down, rock 'n' roll in all its glory!

Scott C.:
Here's how great The Groovies are: This is a legitimate, honest-to-Nanker horse race between these two bands! They're both in my personal Hall Of Fame, first class picks. For the purposes of your battle though, I go Groovies!

Tom:
If I could go back in time to 1972 and had the choice of either a Groovies or Stones show, I'd pick the Groovies, 100% American rock and roll!

But you could be missing the best Stones show ever! (Or a total trainwreck). |

Greg G.:
I'm guilty of not listening to either one of these bands very frequently, but this show's making me consider temporarily stepping away from the country records a little more frequently! Good stuff, Matt.

"Shake Some Action"--this is great, never heard of this one before! Maybe it's the demo, but that's some good jangly 60s guitar.

Agreed, Tom. The Stones do a good one too, as do the Sonics. I don't know if there are any bad versions. Even Aerosmith's is OK! |

Have the Flamin' Groovies ever gone the C&W way, and I'm just not thinking of it? Walkin The Dog is so fantastic it's hard to screw it up, much like Tallahassie Lassie!

Hi Fiveash! Are both "Let It Rock" and "Sweet Little Rock & Roller" Berry covers, or just in the style of?

And that sounds like an interesting subject to delve into--the "under/over"-ratedness of Exile on Main Street. It's a weird feeling, especially when music journalists write about it or the sessions, you get the feeling the double LP receives too much praise. Yet there are tracks like "Let It Loose" and "Torn and Frayed" that you wonder why they don't get more coverage.

Listening in archive later on Thursday. As much as I love the Groovies, I will go with the Stones. For those of us of a certain age, the Stones, and many others of the British Invasion, had actually been our first exposure to some of the great R&B sounds of our own country. The originals just weren't played on commercial radio. As a kid, I wondered if some of the authors of these great songs - like E McDaniels, M Morganfield, A Alexander - might have been from Liverpool. No disrepect to the Groovies, but the Stones were setting us straight years before.

Joe Non Papa:
PS: Your first song is a take-off on a famous old Cuban rhumba, "Mani" (aka "El Manicero"). Ricky Ricardo even sang a version of it on a certain old sitcom. Shrimp and Gumbo has a lot of Perez Prado.

JNP, I didn't know that about the Sabu song. Thanks for the info. Point taken about the Stones, and the Groovies were probably some of those kids you speak of who learned Chuck, Bo, etc. from the Stones. Luckily we don't actually have to choose one or the other. Shrimp Gumbo, Crab Gumbo, Mambo!
