Sat. 5/12/12 1:13pm
kat330:
I was wondering who moved his nose a tad to the left.

Enjoyed watching The Porter Wagoner Show over a UHF TV station from Sacramento back in '73. Dolly Parton was his gorgeous sidekick. That's entertainment!
Sat. 5/12/12 1:49pm
Jedd:
That's double entertainment
Sat. 5/12/12 1:50pm

Howie Sterno:

Sat. 5/12/12 2:20pm
kat330:
Certainly a better comedian than Jim Nabors.
Sat. 5/12/12 2:22pm
Howie Sterno:
a better character all round...i guess Hee Haw had him tied up
Sat. 5/12/12 2:26pm
kat330:
In my search for local Louisville TV of my early childhood, I came across Foster Brooks, "a hayseed character and sidekick to Randy Atcher on T-Bar-V Ranch and Hayloft Hoedown" and Boyd Bennett and His Rockets. Wonder if Rex has ever played "My Boy Flat-top."
Sat. 5/12/12 2:27pm
Listener Jumpy from Brooklyn:
I just noticed George Lindsey High School here in Williamsburg. What an honor!
Sat. 5/12/12 2:28pm
Howie Sterno:

Sat. 5/12/12 2:29pm
kat330:
I dunno it, but my Dad's radio persona beginning around the same time was Flat-top. "Flat-top's Follies" where he'd wail 'em, wail 'em, wail 'em from Salem, Salem, Salem (Indiana).
Sat. 5/12/12 2:31pm
Howie Sterno:
How cool ...you got any airchecks ?
Sat. 5/12/12 2:32pm
Howie Sterno:
an did he say it 3 times or was that an ECHO echo echo
Sat. 5/12/12 2:34pm
kat330:
I didn't inherit anything from his station, which he started in 1953. As I told station manager Ken, it's a shame because I would have had tons of incredible vinyl to donate. But I remember that "wail 'em" line and his sound effects of a mooing cow, meowing cat, etc.

@Howie: Advertisers discovered as the 60s passed that all the rural-theme shows attarcted older and more downscale viewers who didn't have a lot of disposable income, and anyhow were set in their ways about purchasing and therefore didn't respond that much to TV ad campaigns. Instead, they wanted younger suburban and urban viewers.
CBS had many of these rural/small-town-appealing shows, and an early change made by a young Fred Silverman was to start cancelling those shows in the 1970, replacing them with shows like All in the Family and Maude and The Jeffersons in the early 70s. You can google or wikipedia "Rural Purge" for details (that's what this phase of TV history came to be known as). If rural shows had not diappeared in 1970-72, Goober might have gotten a show. Many rural shows were spun off of existing rural shows in the mid/late 60s.

Philo Gristle:
Kat's dad was a real character. Since I moved to the area everybody tells me how he brought Elvis and Rock'n'roll to the area, and his was the only station in southern Indiana/Louisville area that was playing the cool hip sounds!
Sat. 5/12/12 2:45pm
Philo Gristle:
During his funeral a lot of outrageous stories were told -- e.g. he'd started his station without a license. After being on the air for some weeks/months (I forget) somebody asked him about one and he said: "what license?"
Sat. 5/12/12 2:47pm
Howie Sterno:
He dont need no stinking license !...i probly heard him in N ky at some point
Sat. 5/12/12 2:47pm
kat330:
He was a character all right. Now my half-siblings are running the station into the ground. A real shame from its heyday.
Sat. 5/12/12 2:49pm
kat330:
Baptized in butter -- slick!
Sat. 5/12/12 2:51pm
Howie Sterno:
That station shoulda been Kat's...no?
Sat. 5/12/12 2:53pm
kat330:
If I could have moved it away from Salem, perhaps. But it's now a 100% shill for the evangelicals, the only money to be had in rural radio. No thank you.
Sat. 5/12/12 2:55pm
Howie Sterno:
ya cant make 'Hillbilly' a going concern in the sticks anymore?..whats this country coming to
Sat. 5/12/12 2:58pm
kat330:
Besides there were six heirs. Everyone settled with cash from the youngest half-sibling, who is very comfortable with the evangelicals.

Sat. 5/12/12 3:01pm

Fine afternoon of tuneage, Rex! Thanks!
Sat. 5/12/12 3:02pm
