We'll say that's where the "beep beep" for Donna Summer's Bad Girls was sired.

We can let all our bleeps hang out.
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Righto, Van!
Fri. 5/4/12 12:12pm listener james from westwood:

yeah, i clean up nice.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:14pm Matt from Springfield:

Slim Gaillard, love his stuff!
I was trying to remember who recorded "Bang Bang" -- Joe Cuba. That was actually a charting hit at the time, a landmark mainstream success of Latin music in the US.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:21pm northguineahills:

Pizzacato Five. Makes me want to play Katamari Damacy
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:23pm Doug Schulkind:

I had to Wiki it:

Fri. 5/4/12 12:24pm Van in DC:

Ah. The genesis of the WASSSSSUP! Bud commercial :)
Fri. 5/4/12 12:28pm listener james from westwood:

oh, that's a dry burn: "by some accident, there are two good cuts on this record."
Fri. 5/4/12 12:28pm Van in DC:

that was funny :)
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:29pm JAY / LONDON:

hey found you :)
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:31pm Hank:

Is it Cibo Matto? Dullards rule.

Hey Jay, you upgraded to CAPS?
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:33pm JAY / LONDON:

@ hank caps ?
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Cibo it is. Thank Hank. Hey, Jay. (All comments must now be in rhyme.) For a time.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:34pm Hank:

Jay, thought you were a lower case man.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:36pm tr;sh:

First Friday in May.
Hey hey!
Fri. 5/4/12 12:38pm Van in DC:

Hey tr;sh, was catching up on previous GTDS earlier & saw your comment about it being 10 years of nicotine free. Wow! congrats! I myself just passed 19 months. :)
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:38pm JAY / LONDON:

@HaNk lower case higher case , what's the case of the day .. bigger case encase just in case
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:39pm Hank:

tr;sh have you gone semi colon?
Fri. 5/4/12 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

back in junior high, saucer stuff like this riveted me. used to be a show on nyc am radio, wnbc 660 i think, maybe sunday night (not long john nebel or art bell; way before bell) that featured ufo research and interviews. kinda stuff that omni magazine ran when it was still good. i ate it all up.
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:39pm Doug Schulkind:

tr;sh and Van, I wanna give your lungs a hug. (I will wear a protective apron.)
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:40pm Hank:

Think it's time for a cold one, Jay.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:40pm listener james from westwood:

holy crow. congrats, tr;sh and van. best decisions you'll ever make.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:41pm El Thatchmo:

On me, not in me!
Fri. 5/4/12 12:41pm listener james from westwood:

dad and i are scouting rehab or hospice for my mom due to her starting smoking when she was TWELVE. stopped 4 yr ago, but her lungs are done.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:42pm Van in DC:

ya, it can be grim. My lungs are up to 60% of what they should be (up from 43% when I quit). Will likely not improve from there.
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:43pm Doug Schulkind:

My moms is a lung cancer survivor. She quit smoking when I was 10. I told her I would give up sucking my thumb if she gave up cigs. I learned much later that she cheated on me.

I've been sucking ever since, suckah!
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:44pm JAY / LONDON:

I am with you there hank .. will soon be heading out to kings cross for a cold beer and a short well in a half a hour or more i goes .. oh just loving this show
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:44pm Hank:

Steinski is right about the production team on Cibo Matto, worked on Latin Playboys.

How's the blood pressure & Sats, Van.
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Hugs to you, too, Listener James.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:44pm listener james from westwood:

van, you bought yourself a huge break by stopping though, and it's damnably tough. plus your heart and cardiovascular system benefitted almost immediately from stoppage. (the smoking stoppage, not heart stoppage!!)
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Hank, I ADORE the Latin Playboys. Way more than Los Lobos. Especially their first record.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:46pm Van in DC:

high blood pressure (slightly). Everything else is okay far as I know. It was tough to stop. But cold turkey, not a puff one since.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:47pm Hank:

Well done, you will not regret it.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:47pm Matt from Springfield:

Kudos to all the nicotine quitters!
Man, the weather around DC has been really erratic lately. Nice this morning, then a sudden thundershower and now moist and overcast! It's been raining very unpredictably the past week.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:48pm Van in DC:

2.5 packs a day average (50 cigs a day) when I quit. 27 yrs of smoking. About a month ago I figured something ridiculous, like 27,000 cigs I have not smoked since stopping! Boggle.
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Just received word that Adam Yauch has died of cancer. He was forty fucking seven.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:49pm northguineahills:

effin' A, Van!
Fri. 5/4/12 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

thanks doug. been a helluva week.
van, there's actually a medical unit of measure called a pack-year for calculating/standardizing tobacco use. scary that such a unit is needed. i can only imagine you've found a good use for the money quitting freed up! (records, wfmu donations, etc.)
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:50pm still b/p:

Go, quitters. Outstanding. Big credit for something hugely and infernally hard.
I always fear for the kids of the smokers I know. I'd hope that one's own children -- without them having to say anything -- would a more powerful motivator than almost anything else. The prospective early loss of shared life and the terrifically bad experience...but you cain't say such things to folks.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:50pm tr;sh:

@Hank Full on semi-
@Van Thanks! 19 months is amazing.

@all worth celebrating never having to quit that insidiously addictive chem (again) whenever possible
Fri. 5/4/12 12:51pm Van in DC:

@ljfw - yep! That's the $$$ I've been using for various FMU supports & Kickstarters :)
Fri. 5/4/12 12:53pm listener james from westwood:

doug, that is fucking awful. hope beyond hope it's a bad net rumor.
b/p, both my parents smoked. it was a powerful disincentive. otoh, when a resident in my apt complex died, a longtime smoker from the look of the apt (it was clear in the unit where pictures had been, from the stained walls). when his son was making visits to empty out the unit, he took frequent cig breaks. got ingrained early i guess.
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Word came from a well-placed FMU colleague. Blessings to his wife and daughter.
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:55pm Hank:

Is that the time. Steinski is the man. After you Mr S ofcourse he said touching nearly vanished forlock.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:55pm Van in DC:

This show always seems to just fly by so fast for me. Kind of like Jim Price :)

47 is way too young. Sorry to hear that.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:56pm Van in DC:

Yep, his Wiki page was JUST updated with his death.
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 12:57pm Doug Schulkind:

In a few minutes, I have to scoop up my freakiest cat for a trip to the vet. It will not be pretty.
Fri. 5/4/12 12:58pm Van in DC:

Your cats sure love going to the vet :)
  Fri. 5/4/12 12:59pm Hank:

Good luck and goodbye. McGuinn over & out.
Fri. 5/4/12 1:00pm Van in DC:

tmz.com has the breaking news of the death...
Avatar Fri. 5/4/12 1:00pm Doug Schulkind:

I could use a sedative. For me, not the cat.
  Fri. 5/4/12 1:01pm northguineahills:

Goddamn, Adam Yauch, that sucks....
Fri. 5/4/12 1:01pm Matt from Springfield:
