I knew that voice....born in 1962...did not remeber his name...NYC Classic baby!!!!!!!!!
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:28pm
Cecile:
this is everyone's dream - having that voice and playing those songs in that era.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:28pm
Droll:
Does Bill Brown really tear through those UAs and PSAs, or were those carts?
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:28pm

Why can't we have top 40 now? I think the kids would dig it.

Thu. 10/13/11 12:29pm

We have top 40. It's mostly kind of awful. Unless we're talking vintage. Then, yes.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:31pm

Randy in NC:
To continue last night's CKLW topic, research shows in the late 1960's they, WRKO and WOR-FM were all owned by RKO General, thus the similar formats and jingles.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:40pm
Parq:
My 21 year old daughter confirms that top 40 radio lives. But let's face it -- all commercial radio is worthless nowadays, without exception.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:42pm
Cecile:
I have to admit I sometimes like the active rock station because I KNOW I will hear Highway to Hell, Crazy Train and Master of Puppets once per day, without fail. But those records were made a bazillion years ago...
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:44pm
efd:
In addition to the common ownership there were two huge jingle houses at the time that really dominated the business, PAMS and TM -- weirdly, both based in Dallas. Nearly every top 40 station in the 60s and 70s used jingles made by one of those companies, regardless of ownership. PAMS is still around today, but I think they're the only big jingle house left.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:45pm

There are two top 40 stations here in the RTP area that my two listen to...

Nerded out, sorry. :) Thanks for the mention, Joe!

Thu. 10/13/11 12:45pm
Joe B:
Hi everyone, thanks for checking in! don't forget, WFMU is in the midst of our silent fundraiser - can' talk about it on the air but if you can make a pledge for this show it'd be appreciated! more details on the home page if needed!
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:48pm
Randy in NC:
@efd, according to the Wiki, it is "The Johnny Mann Singers" on those jingles. Sorry, more nerding out, I'm done....
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:52pm
Cecile:
Everything on top 40 is autotuned. Except Adele. In that context, I understand why everyone is going insane about her.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:53pm
Cecile:
hell yeah. | |
|
Thu. 10/13/11 12:53pm

Interesting, thanks Randy!

I do not think I'm overstating it when I say the Savages are the greatest jump blues band since its heyday in the 50s.

Thu. 10/13/11 1:03pm
still b/p:
I recently dipped into the local station that is today's Top 40, and after just a few short stretches, heard how the rotation/repetition is still kinda ridiculous....heard the guy singing about his moves like Jagger and the woman singing about her wild behavior last Friday night.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 1:18pm
Randy in NC:
@still b/p, my 13yo son keeps asking me who is this Mick Jagger guy? I explained to him that his name is probably one of the only words they can think of that rhymes with swagger, and all the top 40 songs are about swagger.

I also have a hard time imagining someone actually making a success of Mick moves in a young crowd on a contemporary club dance floor, regardless of whether the observers can ID the influence. Let's experiment. Need a young volunteer.

Here's a fun fact I found out following ex MTV VJ Dave Holmes on Twitter. On his audition tape he introed and outroed Tommy Keene's "Turning on Blue." That's aces in my book.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 1:39pm
Cecile:
He had to pick the clip, I guess, and his words were "I love Tommy Keene."

Wow, that is great! This new album by TK, of course, is great!

Thanks Michael, yes, thanks to anyone who has pledged to this or any other show but if you haven't please do! but if you can specifically pledge to this show, it'd be greatly appreciated! still trying to rebuild the audeince from being off the schedule AND getting moved to a different day and it has been a tough go of it so far!

I just got my copy of it today along with the Boss Mustangs I'm trying to persuade The B-Sides to get an album out, 2 members of The Fuzzrites and Peter Curry of Los Straitjackets play in that band

This must have been the Jayhawks my husband heard. He goes "Remember the Jayhawks?" I go "Yeah, the only song I like of their is 'Blue'". "Yeah, they were on NPR. Well, they don't suck anymore. All their stuff sounds like 'Blue' now." Me: "Cool!"
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:18pm
Midwest Man:
I don't mind the Jayhawks, although they are a bit over played on the radio in the Twin Cities.

All their stuff sounds like... the Jayhawks! Not a bad thing.

Our little family has a love/hate affair with the Byrds, from which the "Hawks draw heavily. But their vintage poppy stuff is good.

I can take or leave the Jayhawks, it's just that the main station here in Minneapolis seems to have a stock playlist of Jayhawks, Replacements, Suburbs and Suicide Commandos. One band I really wish I had a chance to see play live was Trip Shakespeare
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:26pm
Joe B:
Jayhawks phenomenal in my opinion, though I hear ya Midwest Man. My old station, around 92 or whenever they got big, every DJ played them to death, so I resisted for awhile myself!

Thu. 10/13/11 2:26pm
Cecile:
Yeah, MM, that's why I don't listen to the Current. Commandos were fun live but now I'm convinced 80% of their appeal was live, the records were mostly souvenirs.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:28pm
Midwest Man:
Joe, please don't get me wrong. I like them. But I often shy away from anything that become mainstream. which is my fear with some of my favourite bands at the moment, like Dead Bundy & The Neat Neat Neats, Reckless Ones and The F*ck Knights. Love them to pieces, good buddies of mine,
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:28pm
Cecile:
And I've been here for 20 years and I still don't get Suburbs-mania.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:29pm
Midwest Man:
Cecile, Commandos and Suburbs are doing mostly "reunion" gigs these days. Not sure how many times a band can reunite before they milk it too much
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:32pm
Midwest Man:
I don't get the Suburbs mania either. My band records at Old Blackberry Way where the Replacements did one of their albums. The ones that listen to stations like Current and Radio K for some reason think it's awesome, but we record there because we like Neil, the sound engineer
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:32pm
Cecile:
PATTI. Yeah, I know. I think for those shows it's more like 70s/80s reunions for the people in the scene. People fly back for Suburbs shows! One great reunion show I saw was the Spectors.

He's a HeroClicks and D&D nerd. And he's a lurker... He has really specific tastes - mostly 60s bubblegum pop, heavy British folk and movie soundtracks. But we bonded over Led Zeppelin and the Bonzo Dog Band.
|
Thu. 10/13/11 2:35pm
Midwest Man:
Well the Suburbs always pack out First Ave whenever they play. Nowt wrong with D&D, I used to be a nerd with that. Hey Cecile, if your hubby likes 60's bubblegum pop, get him to check out The Fore. they're a Beatlesesque band from South London. Already had 2 albums out

No, we didn't. We saw a few shows where they were kind of tired sounding (in retrospect, it was around the time Daddy-O got sick), so we've passed. But it's overdue.
