Listener comments!

  Thu. 10/13/11 12:07pm Carmichael:

Good day, Joseph. Looking forward to wonderful musical offerings.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:16pm Cecile:

Okay, Nights in Venice by the Saints would be great here.

Hello Joe!
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:20pm Cecile:

vinyl everything!
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:20pm efd:

nice... RIP Bill Brown.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:22pm Joe B:

Hi Carm, Cecile, efd! and anyone else yet to comment, thanks for tuning in
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:27pm MD:

I knew that voice....born in 1962...did not remeber his name...NYC Classic baby!!!!!!!!!
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:28pm Cecile:

this is everyone's dream - having that voice and playing those songs in that era.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:28pm Droll:

Does Bill Brown really tear through those UAs and PSAs, or were those carts?
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:28pm Woo:

Why can't we have top 40 now? I think the kids would dig it.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:29pm SmokinJ:

Seems just like yesterday :)
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:29pm jerrybuchek:

was a wmca good guys listener myself back in the day, but this cat was class, too. thanks joe.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:29pm Cecile:

We have top 40. It's mostly kind of awful.
Unless we're talking vintage. Then, yes.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:31pm Joe B:

not only a broadcast legend but a super, super guy
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:31pm efd:

Droll, strictly a guess but I'd say they're live reads.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:32pm SmokinJ:

Just like you Joe eh?
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:32pm Cecile:

yeah, living the dream. Thanks, Joe.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:35pm Dina:

WOW!!! Flashback!! Thanks for taking me back Joe. Excellent show, as usual. RIP Bill Brown
Thu. 10/13/11 12:40pm Randy in NC:

To continue last night's CKLW topic, research shows in the late 1960's they, WRKO and WOR-FM were all owned by RKO General, thus the similar formats and jingles.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:40pm Parq:

My 21 year old daughter confirms that top 40 radio lives. But let's face it -- all commercial radio is worthless nowadays, without exception.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:42pm Cecile:

I have to admit I sometimes like the active rock station because I KNOW I will hear Highway to Hell, Crazy Train and Master of Puppets once per day, without fail.

But those records were made a bazillion years ago...
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:44pm efd:

In addition to the common ownership there were two huge jingle houses at the time that really dominated the business, PAMS and TM -- weirdly, both based in Dallas. Nearly every top 40 station in the 60s and 70s used jingles made by one of those companies, regardless of ownership. PAMS is still around today, but I think they're the only big jingle house left.
Thu. 10/13/11 12:45pm Randy in NC:

There are two top 40 stations here in the RTP area that my two listen to...
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:45pm efd:

Nerded out, sorry. :) Thanks for the mention, Joe!
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:45pm Joe B:

Hi everyone, thanks for checking in! don't forget, WFMU is in the midst of our silent fundraiser - can' talk about it on the air but if you can make a pledge for this show it'd be appreciated! more details on the home page if needed!
Thu. 10/13/11 12:48pm Randy in NC:

@efd, according to the Wiki, it is "The Johnny Mann Singers" on those jingles. Sorry, more nerding out, I'm done....
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:52pm Cecile:

Everything on top 40 is autotuned. Except Adele. In that context, I understand why everyone is going insane about her.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:53pm Cecile:

hell yeah.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:53pm efd:

Interesting, thanks Randy!
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:54pm Cecile:

I do not think I'm overstating it when I say the Savages are the greatest jump blues band since its heyday in the 50s.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:54pm Cheri Pi:

Barrington "may" move to my neighborhood ;) 2 of his savages are local boys...
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:56pm Cecile:

Cinnicinati is the new Brooklyn
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:58pm Cheri Pi:

can you imagine running into each other at the laundry mat? I knew if i stayed here long enough it would get hip.
  Thu. 10/13/11 12:59pm Cheri Pi:

..probably time to move.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:03pm still b/p:

I recently dipped into the local station that is today's Top 40, and after just a few short stretches, heard how the rotation/repetition is still kinda ridiculous....heard the guy singing about his moves like Jagger and the woman singing about her wild behavior last Friday night.
Thu. 10/13/11 1:18pm Randy in NC:

@still b/p, my 13yo son keeps asking me who is this Mick Jagger guy? I explained to him that his name is probably one of the only words they can think of that rhymes with swagger, and all the top 40 songs are about swagger.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:19pm Parq:

"I've been invited out to dinner with a prominent queen" -- insert reference to your favorite gay Brit comic here.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:23pm Cecile:

Play him some Stones, dude.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:25pm Colin:

really digging the show
Thu. 10/13/11 1:25pm Randy in NC:

Yeah I should...
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:25pm andymorphic:

the stones? how about some zombies
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:27pm Cecile:

Play him some stuff that's not overplayed like Parachute Woman or Dead Flowers, etc.
Thu. 10/13/11 1:29pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Randy, personally, I'd start with Goat's Head Soup of Beggar's Banquet.
Thu. 10/13/11 1:30pm Randy in NC:

There's a lot to pick from.
Thu. 10/13/11 1:30pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Whoops. "or" not "of" d'oh!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:31pm still b/p:

I also have a hard time imagining someone actually making a success of Mick moves in a young crowd on a contemporary club dance floor, regardless of whether the observers can ID the influence.
Let's experiment. Need a young volunteer.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:32pm Midwest Man:

My son was rocking out to Question Mark & The Mysterians earlier
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:32pm Michael Shelley:

Thanks for the Bill Brown - that guy was a super pro. he could talk up a record like nobody else.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:33pm Michael Shelley:

OH YEAH - pledge to Joe's Show!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:37pm Cecile:

TOMMY
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:38pm Joe B:

Jon Spencer show at Maxwell's tonight POSTPONED until November due to illness
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:38pm Cecile:

Here's a fun fact I found out following ex MTV VJ Dave Holmes on Twitter. On his audition tape he introed and outroed Tommy Keene's "Turning on Blue." That's aces in my book.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:39pm Cecile:

He had to pick the clip, I guess, and his words were "I love Tommy Keene."
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:39pm Joe B:

Wow, that is great! This new album by TK, of course, is great!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:40pm Cecile:

I always wondered why I liked that guy. He was one of the few I ever liked.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:40pm Cecile:

I always wondered why I liked that guy. He was one of the few I ever liked. Now I know!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:41pm Joe B:

Thanks Michael, yes, thanks to anyone who has pledged to this or any other show but if you haven't please do! but if you can specifically pledge to this show, it'd be greatly appreciated! still trying to rebuild the audeince from being off the schedule AND getting moved to a different day and it has been a tough go of it so far!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:42pm Midwest Man:

Urge Overkill have a new album out? I didn't realise they were still going
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:42pm Cecile:

Now Kato sounds like Monster Magnet dude in a mellow mood.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:45pm Catfish King:

Cracking show today, Joe! Greets from the fish ranch in Alabam. dan
Thu. 10/13/11 1:46pm Brian in UK:

Randy in NC. Dare I suggest for your son some early stuff, you know Queen Bee or Come On, then progress forward.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:47pm Cecile:

Ha! Nice tribute to Al Davis.

John Facenda!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:47pm dick butkus:

facenda, baby!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:47pm Joe B:

executive producer - Monica Lynch!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:48pm Midwest Man:

Joe, Have you had the new album the Fuzzrites in the mail yet? I've missed the past couple of shows so haven't had a chance to see if you've played them yet
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:48pm Cecile:

the FROZEN TUNDRA
Now I know why I like her so much.
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:49pm Joe B:

Yes! got it a couple weeks ago, played track 1 last week, don't have it in front of me now though, thanks!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:51pm Joe B:

hey Dan! thanks!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:52pm Midwest Man:

I just got my copy of it today along with the Boss Mustangs
I'm trying to persuade The B-Sides to get an album out, 2 members of The Fuzzrites and Peter Curry of Los Straitjackets play in that band
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:54pm Cecile:

I loved how half of the marching music was just orchestrated versions of "What should you do with a drunken sailor"
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:57pm Stevel:

In late, glad to see Dex Romweber on the list!
  Thu. 10/13/11 1:58pm Marmalade Kitty:

The Kinks rule! :)
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:01pm Joe B:

Hi Stevel & MK! Thanks to whoever just pledged as well!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:02pm Midwest Man:

Good to hear The Absolutes, been hearing a lot of their tracks on WRUR at the weekends
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:06pm TJ:

this mikal cronin is good stuff
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:15pm Cecile:

This must have been the Jayhawks my husband heard. He goes "Remember the Jayhawks?" I go "Yeah, the only song I like of their is 'Blue'". "Yeah, they were on NPR. Well, they don't suck anymore. All their stuff sounds like 'Blue' now." Me: "Cool!"
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:18pm Midwest Man:

I don't mind the Jayhawks, although they are a bit over played on the radio in the Twin Cities.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:19pm drewo:

All their stuff sounds like... the Jayhawks! Not a bad thing.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:20pm Cecile:

Our little family has a love/hate affair with the Byrds, from which the "Hawks draw heavily. But their vintage poppy stuff is good.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:21pm Cecile:

and yay Matt Volebeat Smith.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:23pm Cecile:

Baltimore is the new Brooklyn!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:24pm Midwest Man:

I can take or leave the Jayhawks, it's just that the main station here in Minneapolis seems to have a stock playlist of Jayhawks, Replacements, Suburbs and Suicide Commandos.
One band I really wish I had a chance to see play live was Trip Shakespeare
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:26pm Joe B:

Jayhawks phenomenal in my opinion, though I hear ya Midwest Man. My old station, around 92 or whenever they got big, every DJ played them to death, so I resisted for awhile myself!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:26pm 90% dc pat:

..it's just short train ride from where you really want to be...(DC)
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:26pm Cecile:

Yeah, MM, that's why I don't listen to the Current.
Commandos were fun live but now I'm convinced 80% of their appeal was live, the records were mostly souvenirs.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:28pm Midwest Man:

Joe, please don't get me wrong. I like them. But I often shy away from anything that become mainstream. which is my fear with some of my favourite bands at the moment, like Dead Bundy & The Neat Neat Neats, Reckless Ones and The F*ck Knights.
Love them to pieces, good buddies of mine,
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:28pm Cecile:

And I've been here for 20 years and I still don't get Suburbs-mania.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:29pm Midwest Man:

Cecile, Commandos and Suburbs are doing mostly "reunion" gigs these days. Not sure how many times a band can reunite before they milk it too much
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:32pm Midwest Man:

I don't get the Suburbs mania either.
My band records at Old Blackberry Way where the Replacements did one of their albums. The ones that listen to stations like Current and Radio K for some reason think it's awesome, but we record there because we like Neil, the sound engineer
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:32pm Cecile:

PATTI.

Yeah, I know. I think for those shows it's more like 70s/80s reunions for the people in the scene. People fly back for Suburbs shows!
One great reunion show I saw was the Spectors.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:33pm glenn:

hey cecile, is your hubby as big a music nerd as you are? how come we never see him on the comments boards?
Thu. 10/13/11 2:33pm tim from Champaign:

Go Joe! Minutemen get the dander up!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:34pm Cecile:

He's a HeroClicks and D&D nerd.
And he's a lurker...
He has really specific tastes - mostly 60s bubblegum pop, heavy British folk and movie soundtracks. But we bonded over Led Zeppelin and the Bonzo Dog Band.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:35pm Midwest Man:

Well the Suburbs always pack out First Ave whenever they play.
Nowt wrong with D&D, I used to be a nerd with that.
Hey Cecile, if your hubby likes 60's bubblegum pop, get him to check out The Fore. they're a Beatlesesque band from South London. Already had 2 albums out
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:36pm glenn:

good things to bond over, in my opinion. well, that and italian food and good red wine.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:37pm Cecile:

How about Death and Politicians in My Eyes?

That sounds good MM, I'll turn him on to that. He also adores surf music, as do I. Many happy hours at Los Straitjackets shows.
Thu. 10/13/11 2:37pm tim from Champaign:

Joe, could you play the Kelly Stoltz '84 Tigers jam in honor of the Tigers beating the Rangers today (and tomorrow and the following day)?
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:38pm glenn:

doesn't anybody play pinball any more? i'd take pinball over video games any time.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:38pm 15M Spanish Revolution:

Hi you all!

I'm happy you are having same feelings, same reactions now at the opposite coas.

I'm sorry if I was annoying you when I was shouting about the Spanish REvolution, but I'm sure this is something great going on.

Hope to see you all on the 15th at the streets.

Fight for your rights!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:38pm das:

Booyah!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:39pm Cheri Pi:

YEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!

Ive missed you.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:39pm Joe B:

Glenn, there is a great place in Asbury park called the Silverball Museum, row after row of vintage games all in working order!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:39pm Midwest Man:

Cecile
Here's their website http://www.theforeband.com/
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:39pm FePa:

I never get tired of this!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:40pm Midwest Man:

Cecile, did you make it to the Los Straitjackets show last December at The Turf Club?
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:40pm glenn:

i must admit that i was convinced (as late as september) that the phillies would beat boston in the world series. my predictive qualities are suspect.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:41pm efd:

Play it again!! ;)
Thu. 10/13/11 2:43pm Randy in NC:

Does anyone know if original copies of 13W from back in the '60's sounds the same as this Norton version? The production is so forward, clear, and over the top, not like they did things back then.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:43pm efd:

btw, I'm going to be very disappointed if that pledge thermometer doesn't move past the 50% mark before this show is over. Joe Belock! The People's Champ! Help us out, folks! (And thanks to those of you who have already pledged.)
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:43pm Cecile:

No, we didn't.
We saw a few shows where they were kind of tired sounding (in retrospect, it was around the time Daddy-O got sick), so we've passed. But it's overdue.
We do have a lovely poster from a Christmas show with the Pontanis a few years back. It is now part of our permanent Xmas collection.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:43pm glenn:

i loved the cancon show, evan.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:44pm 90% dc pat:

wow, finally looked up the video for that 13 women tune, it's pretty alright: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7__x_3GaJ_g
Thu. 10/13/11 2:44pm Iikka from Helsinki:

There was a half-page obit for Kim Brown in the biggest Finnish newspaper today. They really were huge.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:47pm das:

Joe, whats the best King Uszneiwch album to get first?
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:47pm Midwest Man:

Was that the Christmas show with El-Vez at First Ave?
I think if you see them now with Greg Townson from The Hi-Risers on guitar you'll be pleasantly surprised
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:48pm efd:

Thanks Glenn! and hi Iikka! Here's another "Thirteen Women" clip, where they're lip-syncing to an alternate version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_Ss-zf504Q
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:48pm Cecile:

No, that was before that. It was the Pontanis, the Legendary Shack Shakers and two sets from the Straitjackets, I think.
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:49pm Joe B:

Das, it's a three-way tie for first! 4-way if you count the battle of the bands LP with the South Bay Surfers!
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:50pm Midwest Man:

ahhh, wanted to go to see Legendary Shack Shakers last year, but couldn't get someone to watch the kids
LSJ are playing First Ave next week
  Thu. 10/13/11 2:50pm das:

haha, thought so. Thanks!
