WFMU 50th Anniversary Radio Greats Weekend

Terry Folger (TKF)

It’s true, WFMU is officially middle-aged. And to celebrate, many djs of yore return to the airwaves this weekend. This week on TSP we join the party by suspending (for the most part) our usual ‘world music’ quasi-format and letting all hell break loose.

Joining in studio are indie artist manager extraordinaire (Manage This!) and former FMU dj / Program / Music Director David Newgarden + musician / composer and former FMU dj Matthew Ostrowski + Tom Crowe, the first DJ to go on the air at WFMU’s current studios in Jersey City. We remember other great ex-DJs with archival excerpts.

Also: we hear a couple of songs from a classic 1992 WFMU remote broadcast, the Ex and the late Tom Cora from the old NYC Knitting Factory. (The Ex soon re-enter our orbit as part of a star-studded WFMU/Lincoln Center collaborative multi-national multi-artist free concert at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors on Wednesday August 20.)

WANTED: Obama Songs in multi-culti styles for our pre-election show!

We are putting together as many world music and / or non-English Obama songs as possible for the last show before the election on Saturday, November 1 and for a special one hour program during WFMU's special election day webstream on election day, November 4.

If you have suggestions for songs to play or want to offer your own creation, original song or mash-up please email your host Rob Weisberg via this g-mail address: r.l.weisberg AT gmail DOT com.

I have to chime in- Dan was the nicest person. I remember being about 17, working at Roy Rogers on Route 10 (East Hanover), writing him a note on the back of a napkin and he sent the kindest most inspiring letter back- I used to carry it around in High School for when I needed a pick me up. Great guy!
Matty O, Crow, David Newgarten- all hours of listening well spent.
