IASO Records / Dominican Roots / Globalfest / APAP showcases

IASO Records mastermind Benjamin de Menil was inspired through his discovery of musicians like Super Uba - who he met playing the subways - and 80-plus year old guitarist Puerto Plata to start a label dedicated to great roots music of the Dominican Republic. He introduces us to Puerto Plata (who’s playing at Globalfest, the annual star-studded world music showcase to be held at Webster Hall Sun. Jan 13 in conjunction with the APAP conference) as well as other masters of Dominican roots music.

In addition to artist bios and cds to purchase, there are extensive print, visual and musical resources on the IASO records website for learning more about music of the Dominican Republic. One highlight is this excellent multipart essay on the history of the guitar-centered bachata genre - once snubbed by many, now a pop phenomenon - by David Wayne: http://www.iasorecords.com/bachata.cfm.
