Maybe I spoke too soon. This version of Kanopy is missing heaps of its best titles. (It's very expensive for these libraries to get Kanopy.) I wish there weren't all these different versions/tiers of Kanopy -- and it doesn't SAY you're getting a shitty low-budget version of it when you log in. It just says, "Sorry, this video is not available for your institution." Fuck. I blame the IP holders for being so greedy.
Cassavetes' Mikey and Nicky? On other versions of Kanopy, but not this one. The Wages of Fear? "Not available for your institution." Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast? Forget it, not via QPL.

Librarian here. I second Ike's parenthetical.

But as TDK60 intimates, if you demand convenience, you will pay for it, and in ways and to extents none of us is able to predict. Prices will go up, and some prices will go way up.

If finding your way to the public library to check out an object is a pain in the ass, and if you prefer "virtual" engagement with the sources of the content you seek, then you must be prepared to deal with Terms of Service and varieties of "congestion pricing."

On a brighter note, I just learned that Fred Frith will be making a house concert appearance in N. Berkeley in early February. Gosh, I hope it's streamed.

I still use a lot of DVDs and CDs from the library. I live in Manhattan so there is a big stock to choose from. Like some other systems mentioned you can borrow from the whole, get items delivered to your branch. But you still have to go into pick it up. I'm a bit old-fashioned so I don't mind.

Alex, grab the Arabic title for any of the songs and Google it along with the word "lyrics." Then, if you get a hit, take the Arabic and plop it into Google Translate -- better than nothing!

"Kedi" is the one good title that the QPL tier of Kanopy *does* have. I'm compiling a list of great movies that Kanopy is *supposed* to have and aren't available on the QPL version of Kanopy and submitting my gripe to Reddit as a public service. (Trying to stay off Reddit lately, but seriously, this is just a waste of taxpayer money. Either get Kanopy or don't get Kanopy, not this shitty not-even-half-assed version.)

My point is they should either have it or don't have it, not some not-even-quarter-assed version that probably still costs way too much for what they're getting, which is very little IMHO. More here:

@TDK60: Yes, it does. And yes, it is. Kanopy is now owned by OverDrive: https://company.overdrive.com/company-profile/who-we-are/

Costs tend to be calibrated to FTE, e.g., the size of community served, the number of students, etc. This means libraries pay to permit access by their entire community, fully aware that not everybody will use the service.

Ike, "quarter-assed-versions" are merely choices! If you can't or don't want to pay for the half-assed-version, you might choose the quarter-assed-version. We're here to supply your individual needs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Ike:

↳ Dean @9:36
I clearly specified that this is "not-even-quarter-assed." It has fewer than approximately 5% of the movies from the various lists of correctly-updated "best movies on Kanopy right now" etc.: www.reddit.com...
I absolutely do NOT blame the library. I blame Kanopy for instituting different tiers and not being open and transparent about it. And the greedy IP holders.

That's exactly what I took what you wrote to. mean, Ike. The reason vendors (not libraries) offer gradations of stuff, rather than all or nothing at all, is because they will entice still another sucker/consumer who will "choose" the lower tier, rather than not purchase at all.

Dean:

Libraries are in a position to negotiate these licenses, but give me a break. Very few have the leverage to demand full access at the quarter-assed price. And it's absurd to imagine a library successfully negotiating wide-open access for everybody and his uncle, because then no other library, nor anybody else, would need to pay for the service.
