Sounds ripped from cassettes & CDs found in immigrant-run mom & pop stores. Deconstructed icons. Field recordings. Sonic mayhem from the far corners of the internet.

been listening -- WOW this is phenomenal! how am i so unfamiliar with Ahmed Adaweya?!? thank you so much for presenting these treasures!
fascinating story behind that photo! Abdel Laim Hafez -- "The Dark Nightingale," iirc?
and yes, according to wikipedia, the assault happened in 1989
those delis on Steinway Street! best dates i ever purchased were from one of those -- the shop was Egyptian, the dates from Algeria

that is bizarre -- no Kanopy or Hoopla at NYPL or Brooklyn?!?
(i remember Kedi! just never got to see it when it was released :( -- but i have Kanopy and Hoopla through the Hoboken public library, so i will correct that :) )
Gary:
slugluv1313:

Cassavetes' Mikey and Nicky? On other versions of Kanopy, but not this one. The Wages of Fear? "Not available for your institution." Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast? Forget it, not via QPL.

Gary:
slugluv1313:
looks like Kedi may be available on youtube??
and to echo TDK60 and Gary -- you may be able to watch with DVDs?
(the Hoboken library is similar, in that it is part of a network of libraries in northern NJ -- so i borrow stuff from other libraries all the time)
Gary:
Dean:
But as TDK60 intimates, if you demand convenience, you will pay for it, and in ways and to extents none of us is able to predict. Prices will go up, and some prices will go way up.
If finding your way to the public library to check out an object is a pain in the ass, and if you prefer "virtual" engagement with the sources of the content you seek, then you must be prepared to deal with Terms of Service and varieties of "congestion pricing."

My point is they should either have it or don't have it, not some not-even-quarter-assed version that probably still costs way too much for what they're getting, which is very little IMHO. More here:

TDK60:
It is owned by a larger corp:
KKR.
Gary:
Dean:
Costs tend to be calibrated to FTE, e.g., the size of community served, the number of students, etc. This means libraries pay to permit access by their entire community, fully aware that not everybody will use the service.
Ike, "quarter-assed-versions" are merely choices! If you can't or don't want to pay for the half-assed-version, you might choose the quarter-assed-version. We're here to supply your individual needs!
Ike:
I absolutely do NOT blame the library. I blame Kanopy for instituting different tiers and not being open and transparent about it. And the greedy IP holders.
