Favoriting May 5, 2024: It's Storko de Mayo!! There's cake for Stanley Cowell, then Steel Yourself For Mike Cooper

Birthday props for pianist, composer Stanley Cowell, who in tandem with Charles Tolliver birthed the great Strata-East label - and music and conversation with Mike Cooper whose new Steelaway album is out and about - and Mike professes his love for dub and jungle music. And we'll hear some 'o that, plus some whizzy, wacky steel-guitar besides.

I saw King Sunny Adé a few times in the 80s. The best time was Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Adé was in the USA and wanted to play in NOLA for Mardi Gras. A promoter told him that all the venues were already booked for Mardi Gras. They brain stormed and ended up having him and his band play outside a club on Frenchman street. I don't remember what time they started but they pulled a big crowd and played until almost dawn. Under Adé spell I was rejuvenated and went right to work.

The G7 in Muskoka was just a wild crazy piece of insanity. The only year of no mosquitos or blackflies, air traffic like I've only heard living nearish to the airport in Toronto. I went to an interview/discussion with Carl Stone talking with Eno back in the late ‘80s. That’s the closest I’ve been. Not expensive as I recall and cool to hear Eno speak, but not what I’d call life changing. Not sure if I’d shell out a ton of dough for a concert today, although he’s been a pretty huge influence for me.
