Sugar Lumps Compilation

Acid Jazz

2005

More slightly modern takes on classic fuzz and psych. This came out on Eddie Piller's Acid Jazz records. By the way, Eddie has a new book out called "Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances" and it is EXCELLENT.

1:21:24 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Ultimate Spinach  Ego Trip   Favoriting Ultimate Spinach (Mono Mix)  MGM Records  1968  Bruce-Douglas says that he named the band based on experiences in an acid trip: "One day, in 1967, I was in my room, tripping on some really pure LSD. I started looking at myself in the mirror and my face was doing funny things. I had a bunch of colored markers I used to draw with. I grabbed a green one and started drawing all these psychedelic designs on my face. When I was done, I looked at myself and said 'Whoa! I am ultimate spinach. Ultimate spinach is me!'"[  1:25:25 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Soul Hooligan  Space Travel   Favoriting Sugar Lumps Compilation  Hard Soul  2005  Soul Hooligan began in 1997, as a solo project for veteran hardcore producer Austin Reynolds (who had been Surburban Base's in-house engineer between 1991-1993). Under this moniker he released the first single 'Sweet Pea'. They are an interesting post-Britpop early 2000's take on psychedelia. Out of step with everything, this tune is as authentic as they come...  1:28:31 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Galaxies IV  Don't Lose Your Mind   Favoriting Don't Lose Your Mind 7"  RCA  1967  The Galaxies IV formed at Catholic school in Trenton in 1962. Members were T.J. The Hallmarks  Soul Shakin' Psychedelic Sally   Favoriting Soul Shakin' Psychedelic Sally / Girl Of My Dreams 7"  Smash Records  1967  Need more psychedelic reverb and space echo...this garage-y stomper has it all. For Oceanport group The Hallmarks “Soul Shakin’ Psychedelic Sally” would be their only release and it’s become a highly collectable favourite 45 on the psych scene of today...  1:34:38 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Dr. Spec's Optical Illusion  She's The One   Favoriting Tryin' To Mess My Mind/She's The One 7"  Flambeau  1967  Dr. Spec's Optical Illusion was an American garage rock band formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1965. n early performances, the Illusions' set list was typically dominated by cover versions of other artists' material ranging from British Invasion songs to R&B standards by artists such as James Brown and Curley Moore. In addition, the band was notorious for their ear-shattering performances, with the local speech and hearing director measuring their cacophony at 140 decibels.  1:37:19 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Noel Gilpin Emporium  Will You Miss Me When I'm Dead?   Favoriting Sugar Lumps Compilation  Acid Jazz Records  2005  Another great track from Eddie Piller's 2005 Acid Jazz comp. People suspect whether they ever existed...because there is little to nothing to know about them. And they could be dead...but who knows?  1:39:31 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Plastic Penny  Strawberry Fields Forever   Favoriting Two Sides of a Penny  Page One  1968  How absolutely cheeky of this band to cover one of the greatest songs ever written a scant year after its release. Even though the critics hated this band, calling them "derivative and forgettable"....there's something about this particular organ driven cover with a base sound that later would become JJ Burnel of the Stranglers signature tone. I absolutely love it.  1:42:49 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Pink Floyd  Summer of '68   Favoriting Atom Heart Mother  Harvest  1968  To me, one of Floyd's finest...gentle, pastoral psychedelia...it's impossible to have a bad trip listening to this record. Heavy, elegant, regal, gentle, hits you squarely in the third eye with gentle caresses...it is a masterpiece.  1:47:14 (MP3 | Pop-up)

1:52:45 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Association  Never My Love   Favoriting Never My Love/Requiem For The Masses 7"  Warner Brothers  1967  AllMusic's Stewart Mason wrote of the "laid-back and dreamy" single with a "sleek and sophisticated" tune that "the dual lead vocals, by Terry Kirkman and Larry Ramos, are supported by wordless harmonies as effortlessly airy as whipped cream." Never My Love" is a pop standard written by American siblings Don and Dick Addrisi..and the Association's version still holds as the most successful of this oft covered tune. (BMI) announced it was the second most-played song on radio and television of the 20th century in the U.S..and rightly so, it is   1:57:04 (MP3 | Pop-up)

↳ Song: "Boys" by "Tammy St. John"
it was the shirelles version that the beatles knew. the first version, i guess. they covered it because they liked it, and apparently the gender issue/non-issue never crossed their collective mind. (just as traditional folk songs generally get sung as originally meant, regardless)
i personally think it's a terrible beatles song! but the first time i heard the shirelles version i realised it's a good song.
