Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from March 26, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Howdy! I realized this morning I did not reply to your bit about listening to Edith Piaf whilst camping. I think it's cool. I have not gone camping in several years. I haven't listened to Edith Piaf that much lately, but I did have a best of type CD that I used to listen to a lot. In the early 2000s there was a lot of Leadbelly, Piaf, Nina Simone, and also Merzbow.

The Mid-Valley is one of those large, unincorporated parts of the county, that seems to encompass a number of climates and terrains, somehow. We usually try to explore the Mid-Valley, through music and stories, collage and cut-ups... or just playing songs, occasionally.

It's mostly an excuse to play some stuff I'm into lately.

My friend Wm. Berger, a venerated WFMU dj and musician in his own right used to talk about the quality of an artist like Robyn Hitchcock that was "wacky, but desperate." Syd Barrett was of that ilk too. Berger came up with the term lo-fi.

I watched Big Country (Gregory Peck, Charles Bickford, Burl Ives, Charlton Heston, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, and even creepy Chuck Connors) recently and it was a classic tale about cattlemen vs ranchers. There's a climactic shootout at the end that tries to tie it all up with a nice bow, but just seems really odd.

Another Eugene, Oregon band that is no longer around. I only saw 9th Life a few times, but their shows were spectacular and wild. The drummer played a junkyard set of things he found in wrecked cars. He played standing up. Both the drummer and guitar player sang. They jumped and screamed and they were the best thing I've ever seen. I wish I could see them again. A criminally under-heard "In The Red" album from the early 00s...

Guilty as charged. Never heard of them. Sounds kind of like Allman Brothers meets PJ Harvey.

The Frontier Gentleman is a gentleman, but he isn't considerate.

You might dig the record. I love it, but I'm biased.

I do love this accent! Here's a dram to whet your whistle!

Hi univac! Moonshine?

Anyone have any gin?

But a bit o' moonshine might just hit the spot.

Let me check Old Scratch's saddlebags for a flask...

Ah! Here ya are, fellow cowpoke. Hope lilac flavor suits ye. Rochester speciality.

Mmm. Lilac. I hear their wood's real pretty in the heart. Purply-like.

I have finally broke down and I'm sipping a shot of bourbon in the Lava Lamp Lounge. Cheers!

They're fragrant and delicious! Being in the Flower Flour (Flour Flower? I should know that.) City means we have weird gin flavors!

The Frontier Gentleman gets called out for his bad "English" accent.

↳ Song: "Twenty Questions" by "Beasties Boys"
I was a rabid Beastie Boys fan when this collection came out. It got a lot of play in the late 90's / early 00s in my house.

↳ Song: "Rambling Man" by "Melvins & Hank Williams III"
Morpheus, son of Hypnos, summons me. Reckon I'll hit the bedroll.

I really enjoyed my time here in Mid-Valley (West) - love the ol'-timey western stuff; brought back nice memories of moseying around back roads of the desert southwest with my gal.

'night y'all - see y'all at daybreak!

Another clue that The Frontier Gentleman might be queer: the way he says, "You're half right," when he is told a woman is the source of his problems.

↳ Song: "It's Okay, It's Time To Go" by "Evolutionary Jass...
This was one of the best bands to play in PDX, period, when I lived there. I saw them a few times, but I got to work a wedding as a DJ, where they were the band performing the music for the wedding, and it was magical.
