Peter K.:

No, the melody and the bass line are both "All Blues" and not "Flamenco Sketches." The titles were originally reversed on the original LP, and it might even have taken a few reissues before the error was fixed. But this was definitely always meant to be listed as "All Blues." That melody Frank Milion sang was "All Blues."

San Francisco--sounds great. Sorry to hear you caught a cold--glad it was just a cold! As I'm sure you know, Jungian dream interpretation is so personal. I realized that driving in a car, for me, in dreams, usually was a metaphor for how my life was going/how I was doing in it. Maybe your train is similar?

Years ago I met this girl In San Francisco. Things got going pretty fast, so she came to stay with me in L.A. a couple months later. In the light of the day I realized her hair was filthy. So, before we continued I had to drag her into the bathtub and wash her hair. It was like scrubbing a cat. After she was dried off, I was amazed how much hair she had!

She told me me her grandfather said dirt was a protective coating to guard against germs.

Thanks for this link! Delightful fleshing out of the Bernstein-Gould relationship.

I have the "complete 1955 Goldberg Variations sessions" box, have barely listened very far. But there are delightful moments where he is talking to the recording engineers and producers and demonstrating things, not in a lecturing tone, but with this aura of "isn't this cool"?! And if memory serves... there's some weird moment when he mashes up an American and British anthem, I'll have to dig that up.

DJ Peter, in that piece Bernstein discusses the story behind the huge controversy (it was huge at the time) about Gould's bold reimagining of the Brahms and the pillorying of Bernstein for his public comments about it. It was assumed that Bernstein had blindsided Gould with his public skepticism, whereas Gould had actually encouraged Bernstein to talk about it openly.

Yes, that fits what I know of both men. Bernstein wouldn't show someone up like that. OTOH Bernstein could have a mischievous twinkle in his eye (you can see it in the Harvard lectures more so than the Young People's concerts) and it would be easy to interpret as an eye roll. (But can you see a twinkle from the stage? A TV lecture, sure.)
