Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from January 12, 2024 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I understand the default to chronology, for sure, but this reminds me of the late, occasionally great Harold Bloom, whose theory of the anxiety of literary influence purportedly skirted chronology, such that a strong poet like, say, Chaucer, suffered in the face of the greatness of his successor Shakespeare. Wish I could establish that Bloom actually said as much.

Per our conversation earlier: Years ago I had a neighbor who called the cops on me for making to much noise. I never forgave him. Once I was standing in front of my open garage. He walked up and gave me a thick book. I threw it over my shoulder and it landed in a coal grate in the garage. I stared him in the eye laughing. He marched away in a dramatic huff and we never talked again. Years later, I got the book out of the coal grate and dusted it off. It was Man and His Symbols by Carl Jung.

It became my bible, and to this day a template for understanding my own unconscious mind.

A hidden advantage of inner tubes is that, when it's Friday afternoon, and the sun is out, and I've finished my paperwork, and want to hop on the nice bike I haven't been on in a couple of months, most likely I can just air up the tires and go. With tubeless, I should have thought about it yesterday. But now the Orange Seal is in, and the chain is freshly lubed (NFS Green Genie, like it so far), and the music will sound just fine on one earbud, so I'm going for a ride. Thanks, UM!
