Yeah - LBJ was a skillful enuff politician - & intimidating enuff to Congressional Reps - he saw thru what JFK had initiated & intended. That included 'Great Society' domestic Programs - & the Civil Rights Act. Being a Texan - LBJ knew exactly what the cost would be : the Democratic Party would completely lose the South. To this day this is true - & this was crucial for Nixon's 'Southern Strategy'. (This is why when Republicans point out that Lincoln was a Republican - it's utterly out of the current context.)
Unfortunately - the other Policy that LBJ saw thru & extended - was the Vietnam Conflict.
He couldn't handle the backlash - & stepped down
...& RFK was going to be President of the United States - ending the Vietnam Conflict - & dedicated to Civil Rights & Equity of all kinds.
He was murdered like his brother, & like MLK (in rapid succession).
The Democratic Party divided against itself - violently even (see the DNC Chicago 1968 - one of the most consequential & significant events in Modern U.S. History) - with 'Radicals' versus 'Moderates'.
Nixon skated in with landslides - appealing to 'Law & Order' (unafraid that he echoed Hitler's precise words...)
& - frankly - here we are today.
