International Novelty Quartet  Silver Bell   Favoriting 1931  The International Novelty Quartet and The International Novelty Orchestra started appearing in record catalogues from 1922 to the 1930's, becoming extremely popular with a string of best-selling discs. No one seems to have seriously studied the different groups that were formed solely as studio units to make records, always with the xylophone and clever arrangements as a special feature. They brought together some of the best musicians in England and the United States. Information on the participants is scant. These 'house bands' released discs in Europe under the these names also. Often I played Belafonte's live version as well, just for fun but also to let the kids name the differences.
  10:43am

That Belafonte record is something of a lodestar in the audiophile world. Some claim that on a good stereo system one can hear the subway running under Carnegie Hall.

Oliver Cobb apparently was known as the St. Louis Louis
  10:50am
MHLee:

A short-lived trumpet player named Oliver Cobb patterned himself after Louis Armstrong and
had a band called the Oliver Cobb Rhythm Kings. The band had two people in it who were both
in high school: Singleton Palmer and, later, Eddie Johnson. This band became the St. Louis
Crackerjacks after Cobb drowned in the Mississippi River and Johnson took over the band.

Golly, how did Cobb drown? That made me think of the sad story of Joe Perkins. Perkins had a hit with Little Eefin Annie on Monument. Eefin was proto-beatbox and Jimmy Riddle who was on the record appeared regularly on Hee Haw doing the Eef thang. The B-side of the single was a sad song about drowning in the Cumberland River. Sadly, Perkins did drown in the Cumberland. Not much info for him online except for this:

  11:22am
Dean:

Found a story, two brief paragraphs, in the Chicago Defender, July 4, 1931, about the drowning of Cobb.

River Takes Life of St. Louis Cornetist
GALESBURG, Ill., July 3--Oliver Cobb, trumpet player with Arthur Ray's "Rays of Sunshine" company, on the S.W. Brundage shows, was drowned last week in the Des Moines river at Ottumwa, Iowa. The body was shipped to the boy's mother, Mrs. Ollie Cobb, 2229 Pine St., St. Louis. He is survived by a wife and child.

All mail for the "Rays of Sunshine" company should be sent to general delivery, Galesburg, Ill.

Sounds like someone only interested in hearing the music tightly edited the Edwards show. The beginning of My Blue Heaven sounded cut. Love getting to hear more of Cliff Edwards but miss the context given by the jokes and intros.

I don't know... like I said, it was one file with about 5 second in between the tracks. I did't cut the songs shorter than they already were. I understand stations were using these discs, to be able to pause and have their own customized live bit.
