While I’m still around: I, too, began my “higher” education in the fall of 1971. I was upstate at SUNY New Paltz, and it was a “trip” for a barely 17 year old kid straight outta Brooklyn. I was already into some blues and jazz (that’s my roots). But, Allman Brothers, The Band, Dead, Airplane were all in constant rotation in that part of the dorm where the guys were. When you walked to where the girls resided, you heard Joni, Laura, Carole and Cat Stevens. Of course, I’m generalizing. There were plenty of exceptions and more sounds than just the aforementioned.

I took a history of jazz class at SUNY New Paltz. The teacher toured with Charlie Parker behind that Bird w/strings record. I went over to SUNY Binghamton for two semesters in 1973. Got to see Duke Ellington at the women’s gym. Slam Stewart was a “fellow” at the school, and he’d have jam sessions at the dining hall. One of the jams featured Dizzy Gillespie. The other one had Clark Terry.

That's a great way to break into jazz-I had tried once, took Miles Smiles out of the library, couldn't make heads nor tails of it. The history course I took used The Smithsonial History of Classic Jazz as its text, going through it chronically made everything click for me (Chuck Israels had to leave for a short time, gigs, I presume, he had Lee Konitz come in as sub for a few classes. He put on Miles' On The Corner on the turntable, pulled out his alto, and jammed along with it for the class. It was very cool).
