Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Gerry from Miami:

Hello to you, Uncle Michael! Yesterday our vererans' recreation specialist took five of us to Miami's premier modern art museum, the Perez.Wasn't all that stimulated by most of the exhibits, except for one. It was a room filled with paintings, drawings, books, photographs and assorted memorabilia commemorating the life and work of the late author and social commentator, Joan Didion. It was titled "The Things She Saw." The one piece that really caught my eye was the re-creation of her writing desk/table. Aside from an ashtray full of cigarette butts, pencils, etc., there was a turntable with an LP sitting in playing position. Below on the floor next to the desk was a collection of albums in their jackets. They were arranged so you could only view the one in the front of the horizontally-arranged stack. This record cover looked familiar to me, but there was only a bit of tiny lettering visible. But I was able to lean cl I seriously and see that the LP on the turntable was "Donovan in Concert." And then I realized that was this disc's cover down on the floor. I had owned this record umpty-odd years ago. It clued me into what Ms. Didion was listening to in the 60s and this enriched the impact of the entire exhibition and her imp I trance in American culture. BTW, I pulled up the Donovan album on my laptop when I got home. Good one from the "Hurdy Gurdy Scotsman."
