Not at all related to the current goings on, but just opened and listened to a recent reissue by Craft Records (who have been doing great reissues lately) of the early Savoy Bebop sessions called The Birth of Bop. I have most (if not all) of this elsewhere in reissues, but the, ahem, craft of this box is great; terrific sound, interesting booklet with general overview and track by track analysis. Would highly recommend!

I thought the subtext of the song was the Israelites escaping from Egypt. How could a rabbi dislike that?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
doctorjazz:

Your right, the versus do relate to the crossing of the Red Sea-I've always interpreted the chorus as then telling us to baptize (after all, the Israelites didn't "wade" into any water, the sea was separated and they walked on dry land). But I could be over thinking this...

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm

Absolutely, but then there's no reason to "wade", since it's dry land according to the story (except for alliteration, which. could be the whole reason for it, actually)

Found an interesting article on the meaning/roots of the song Wade in the Water.
The wading part does indeed refer to the Underground Railroad for escaping slaves-the wading in shallow streams was to avoid leaving a scent trail for dogs to find and recapture the escaping slaves. Fascinating!
