Has been remarked in FMU boards of late that none of the Floyds were yer top-level instrumental virtuosos - but they were unfailingly creative & intelligent & interesting. (& let's face it - definitive & indispensable.) Yet they each had / have their own Voice Musically. Which is to say - they have something to Express - which is the most valued thing. They started not as Schooled Musicians - but like any other Band of Kids in the earlier 1960s Movement ...& (after TheBeatles & Pepper ...tho early on they were in fact exactly contemporary with that) became sort of figureheads of the Progressive direction of the whole Culture. So that's some pretty heavy lifting from a dead start, manner of speaking... Of course - Floyd always bore the direct weight & the quality of the implicit association with actual (rather then merely rhetorical) psychedelic drug use. For years & years...

always attached to this track the memory of saturday afternoons, my mother left my father with her youngest 2...we had to clean our rooms on saturdays, and after i'd done that i'd smoke some herb and lay down for a few hours just listening to music. my window looked down upon some fig trees that were always teeming with birds, and this song and that scene were a perfect fit.

If you listen to Explorers Room on the Drummer Stream - you can hear how Floyd relate to other Electronic, Experimental & Avant Artists it seems to me are very much their peers !
But those Artists are all the definition of Obscure, broadly speaking
- & Floyd is this huge iconic ClassicRawk Band...
Certainly Floyd were aware of the Others.

It's one thing to have say LSD experiences - they all did & we all have. It's another to be like the Acid Prince of Psychedelic London & consume intoxicants like Syd did. In that time & subculture - people would drop it on each other on a whim. Plain madness.

Self-taught Gittar (really it's the simplest & most responsive instrument ...that's why *everybody* plays it...) - took Sax lessons as a kid (didn't practice @ home ...played Gittar by ear ! ...& wasted all that...) So I can fiddle with Flute & Woodwinds (Sax is also one of the simpler ones ...note how these easy ones are the common Rawk instruments :D ...)
Keyboards tho ...they say it's simple cause all the Notes are laid right out. But - Gittar is these hand shapes. Keys present the intervals differently. (You can't put a Capo on a Piano...) Plus simply - you've got both hands choosing several notes @ once ! I could teach myself to get something out of it ...but I wouldn't want to learn it wrong. Plus - if you're learning Keys - you really should get your Music Theory - Reading Music & everything together & not screw around. You go to Music School - everybody learns Keyboard.
...Point being - people who get that together have mucho Respect from where I sit...

Not to dispute your general comment, the 2 independent hands in piano/keyboard playing seems really difficult to me. But, as a self taught/lapsed guitar player who also took some jazz guitar lessons way back in the day, I have to say that learning basic guitar is fairly easy, but getting into more complex guitar music (classical, jazz), where you sometimes get different lines fingured JUST USING THE LEFT HAND, is killer hard, harder than piano according to some.

I had a copy of "Ummagumma" but never listened to it much, so it's cool to revisit this part.
I will say this about Ummagumma - it has THEE definitive version of "Astronomy Dominé." Epic. I made of tape of "Piper" but I replaced th studio version with the live "Ummagumma" version.

I am not sure if this was number three or even number five whan speaking of Pink Floyd I heard for the first time, but the first "proper" one. Not that it was important, but the earlier ones were strong cases like 'Wish You Were Here' but also 'Obscured By Clouds' and
'Animals' - not exactly the go to ones (but yet rather important for me.)
