Sorry, BOB and all the Brainiacs! Been distracted today and forgot to greet everyone. Great show as always. Today's opener, "Mendocino," by the Sir Douglas Quintet, was a song I heard repeatedly during my 9-week stay at Fort Ord, California, in 1969, getting my basic combat training for duty in Vietnam..The AM radio reception on the Monterey Penisula was sketchy, but we recruits(mostly draftees) did get to listen to some radio. Two other frequently-heard records during those 9 weeks were "Jingo Rock" from Santana's first LP and the Motown classic, "What Does It Take" by Jr. Walker and the All-Stars.
Avatar 12:36pm
Bob Brainen:

All fine songs, Gerry.
My nephew Eric was at Fort Ord many moons later, in the 90s, for the language program.
  12:50pm
Gerry from Miami:

BOB, your nephew was probably at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, just down the road from Fort Ord. Along with other bases, Bill Clinton shut Fort Ord down during his 8-year presidency(1993-2001). Lucky me! I ended up going to Army language training(Vietnamese, of course!) at Fort Bliss, Texas, in the desert outside El Paso for 9 months before shipping out to the war zone in 1970. By the way, what language did your nephew study? By the 90s, Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Farsi became more essential to the US military.

George Carlin used to say that he loved meeting individual people, but hated groups of them. To some extent, that's my experience, too, though I'm not a gregarious type. But I don't think humans as a species are blameworthy. However, humans as social beings (i.e., groups) most certainly can be.
  1:07pm
Gerry from Miami:

It's always a guessing game as to which version of "Strawberry Letter #23" a DJ is playing until about a minute into it. The Brothers Johnson did a fabulous job of rendering Shuggie Otis's original. And their take sold far more "plastic ware."

  1:10pm

Great song, love the slight bossa nova feel
  1:11pm
Dean:

The inverse of Carlin, interesting. Carlin's POV seems the most charitable, inasmuch as he seemed truly to regard individuals as individuals, not mere examples or types, and he respected them for their enthusiasms, regardless of whether or not he shared them.
  1:14pm
Gerry from Miami:

How about French novelist/philosopher JEAN-PAUL SARTRE's quote from "NO EXIT"-----"HELL IS OTHER PEOPLE."
  1:18pm
Jeff:

The only worthwhile things humans have contributed (in my opinion) are in the creative arts: music, art, literature, etc. The rest of our legacy is death and destruction. I hate to be so negative, but that’s the way I see our species (as a whole). We had a lot of potential, but we’re pissing it all away. I just wish we’d leave Mother Nature and her inhabitants alone.

Even the arts operate in the shadows of death and destruction. I attended an exhibit of works and objects of The Tudors yesterday. Utterly gorgeous stuff, but you know what it served. Technology is also fascinating, though so many advances occur to bolster military strength.

@PT. Been hearing a lot of Van Dyke Parks on WFMU lately. Followed him since the early Mojo Men/Harper's Bizarre/Song Cycle days. Saw him play at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA, just before the release of "Jump," his song adaptation of Joel Chandler Harris's "Tales of Bre'r Rabbit." He brought along Kathy(?) Beside Kathy Dalton vocalizing on Van Dyke Parks's "Jump" album, he also snuck in Jennifer Warnes and Danny(3 Dog Night) Hutton for good measure.

Watching the Linda Ronstadt documentary learned that her friend and early collaborator in music, Bobby Kimmel, started the music series at McCabe's after he was asked to step aside for Capitol Records to take Ronstadt as a solo artist.

I'm heading to LA next week. During my stay, a Beverly Hills gallery will mount an exhibit devoted to Horace Tapscott and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Orchestra. I won't make the concert, but I hope to get to the exhibit.

Great McCabe's story, @WR! I sure wish I were just a wee bit older or wiser at the time. Would have loved to have heard Linda, Andrew Gold, etc., in the small venues.

One of the best Tues from the Who's "SellOut" masterpiece. BOB, is this the original or an alternate version from the reissued super deluxe box set?
