Jeff:

I saw a crazy movie the other day - The Sphynx (1969). It was so bad, it was good. Had a bit of a Monkees theme to it, and one of the guys in the band was someone from my neighborhood. His real name is Denny Sarokin, but he was known as Denny Larden back then. Denny and his brother Larry had a folk duo in the early ‘60s, and they used to play for me and my friends all the time. After that, they formed Every Mother’s Son, and then Denny joined the Stone Canyon Band and played with Rick Nelson until the end. The film had an insane array of cameo appearances: James Brown, Rudy Vallee, Johnny Weissmuller, Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Georgie Jessel and many more. Music by Leiber & Stoller, backing tracks by the Wrecking Crew and screenplay by Stan Cornyn who wrote some of the most far out liner notes for Warner Bros/Reprise.
It was so bad, you’ve got to see it!

July 20, 1969 I drove to Amsterdam for the afternoon with three friends. Being a Sunday, as noted by Dean, it was pretty quiet. but we took a chance and stopped by Club Paradiso, a legendary converted church. Across the center diagonal of the main auditorium was a straight row of televisions, all tuned to the lunar surface and the Apollo lander. The astronauts were still inside resting, awaiting their first descent to the surface.

Gerry from Miami:

@AZ Dave. I viewed the July 20, 1969, lunar landing on a 17-inch black and white TV brought into our barracks building at Fort Ord, California, by our off-duty(it was Sunday) drill sergeant. We had 40 raw draftees huddled around the set, marveling at this astounding event occurring 250,000 miles away, as we were being prepared to go to war here on Earth.

Hi Bob, Andrew, Dave and all, and Sem (if he's not too out of it)

I spent July 20, 1969, among the few spectators allowed into the soundstage where the landing took place.

Great show, Bob. have you seen Ben Katchor's marvelous book on the dairy restaurant? I think you'd dig it.

Speaking of dairy restaurants, what do you all think of Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray. Voting YES over here!

An acquired taste that I never managed to acquire. Love Dr. Brown’s cream soda. Judging by Bob’s “I like celery as wellery,” odds are that he’s a Cel-Ray aficionado.

I liked Cel-Ray tonic as a kid but I'm more of a Dr. Brown's Diet Black Cherry fan!

I’m vegetarian now, but, back in my deli days, a pastrami or corned beef on rye w/a Cel-Ray was the only way to go. Of course, mustard on the sandwich and sour pickles on the side.

Back to dairy restaurants: Does anyone remember a Rappaport’s. I think it was on Delancey, a block or so from Ratner’s.

I'm mostly vegetarian but tomorrow I hope to have a corned beef w/ Black Cherry! Pickle is 'e' for essential
