It's just a 19 character Code 39 bar code. I work with bar codes in my job that I've had for 25 years IRL. I work at an industrial printing company and we specialize in bar codes aka ADC. I've said many times that I can talk about my job if you have trouble sleeping. It will put you right out.

One thing I don't like about ISRC is that there is a limited number of approved registrants. Are barcodes centralized this way? (you never know what will put people to sleep)

Well, UPC and EAN codes are proprietary symbologies that require registration and a yearly licensing fee for the privilege of having one on your products. The beginning of each code is the client's account number. It seems ISRC follows that general idea too, but I don't know enough about that. Books have ISBN codes that are purchased from Bowker. Asset and logistic bar codes do not require registration. We make signs for warehouses that help workers find where they are in a ginormous warehouse via a scanner attached to a forklift, for example.

I think I get it, bar codes are just encoding of information that had to exist previously. My mistake was coming from the fact that in the music industry (think biggies like UMG) they use the term "barcode" to refer to the identifier that will end up as an actual bar code on something

Right. Bar codes contain machine-readable information. They replace manual entry. We print what is called the human readable interpretation of the encoded information on the labels as well, just in case the machines fail. Some not so forward thinking folks have called that a man-readable number. Egad.
