It's dredged, but the Lenape would walk across it at low tide in some places to cross from Manhattan to the Bronx.

Fun fact: the Harlem ebb tide flows INTO the Hudson, so basically the opposite from the East River. This is why Hell Gate is so much fun.

In deep winters, we get ice chunks, but the water is all salt -- it's basically just the Atlantic Ocean. So it never really freezes over. The salt line on the Hudson is usually up around Nyack, and as far up as Albany it's still somewhat brackish. It only loses about a foot of elevation in that 150 miles, which is why it's tidal all the way to Albany.
