Fave songs are: Laughing, Gardening at Night, and pretty much all of Reckoning. I saw them play at Radio City Music Hall in 1985. Went with my friend from work who was in charge of import albums at the warehouse for the record store chain where we both worked.

Reading - as in Reciting Out Loud
- it's more of a specific Art & Skill than I think a lot of people realize.
Different than Writing. Different than Playing - or Singing.
A natural tendency is to go faster than the words might merit - just to fill the space & get thru it by oneself.

When Reciti ng & Playing are combined - the Musician(s) have to really the Poetry is already Music. & not trample all over it.
The Poet / Reader for his (her) part has to do suddenly what the Musicians are already used to - & give tone - & above all Space to it...

One of my first exposures to REM was on some *kids'* program ...actualy interviewed them & he was asked why the mumbling. They said two things: The voice is another instrument & shouldn't be separated from the overall sound with lyrics printed out. & - they were from Georgia where it's hot & humid like swimming thru the air - & their sound correlated to that. As a small-town NewHampshuh boy - that resonated too (or I thot it did)...
