I've always maintained that B./R./M. Gibb wrote the weirdest popular songs of the Sixties — and that's saying a lot considering the decade in question!
Avatar 6:11pm
cometothesunshine:

The majority of the sweeping orchestration heard in this show was the work of Bill Shepherd whose contribution to their music is underreported

Lori Balmer - one of the strangest children records ever recorded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm

Exactly, Andrew! I feel that they were just following a very strange muse that led them into Hitsville somehow.
Avatar 6:13pm
cometothesunshine:

I love visiting the Netherlands, Guus.
Avatar 6:14pm
cometothesunshine:

@Gaylord, they are a bit like The Beach Boys in that way. They tap into melodic emotion in a non verbal way. And then they surprise you with very sharp lyrics, albeit randomly.
  6:15pm
Guus:

You're welcome !
  6:16pm
Carmelita:

@Andrew I agree with the comparison. I’ve always felt that myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Andrew: I agree that there's a Brian-level savant aspect to their songcraft. Their songs, and especially their lyrics, often don't make sense on paper, but fortunately we don't listen on paper. Also, that Lori Balmer song certainly kept up the promise of surprises you made! I love it, and it was new to me!
Avatar 6:17pm
cometothesunshine:

Not to get too heavy, but there is a divinity to what they are tapped into. As an agnostic, it is about as spiritual as get when I get lost in one of their records.
  6:18pm
JWI:

I didn't know Lori Balmer went to the UK. I thought they had just worked with her in 1966 in Australia.

  6:24pm

I agree with Robin! Hi Mom Whig!
  6:24pm
JWI:

I loved what Vince said on the HBO Doc... That they would write, write, write and then just GO. Then they cut to HARRY BRAFF. So effective.
Avatar 6:25pm
cometothesunshine:

They apparently woke up Robert Stigwood in the middle of the night when they had to sing him Harry Braff.
Avatar 6:25pm
Ross66:

That Horizontal album has some rockers in it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Gaylord Fields:

I also had the privilege of interviewing Robin, whom over the years I was led to understand had a reputation for prickliness. But I found him to be as open and as kind as can be, as well as a complete gentleman — albeit one who didn't hold back on his opinions. Maybe because he didn't play the game, he got saddled with the "difficult" label.

@Carmelita - I don't think the Gibbs were into that area of drugs - they just had a lot of imagination and no boundaries lyrically.

Avatar 7:54pm

Orange Peel had the name first and John Ravenscroft stole it from him when they were DJs together at KMEN in the 1960s. He tells this story like every day.
Avatar 7:57pm
JWI:

@Ross66 I think the context there is that Robin had absolutely nothing to do during performances of First of May. It could have been a non-Robin-esque single. But First of May felt mean, and intentionally so, to him.
