On the Sheena stream, you will always be first Mr Fab.

Hi MM and friends! I'm totally in the mood for this!
Avatar 1:03pm
Miss Mei:

Today we have some bits from ambient/electronic/new age music from the 80s! Most of it comes from private press cassettes released by the Malibu, CA label Valley Of The Sun Publishing, a company started by the late Dick Sutphen who was a hypnotist, author and more
Avatar 1:03pm
Jamie Jazz:

Loving this while I send my emails!! Perfect. Hi all!

MHLee:

This is pleasant

Miss Mei:

I have been having some voice problems, which is why the last bit of episodes have no voiceovers in them - I will go back to doing voiceovers when I can. It can be a bit difficult since I am insecure about my voice.
Avatar 1:07pm
Mr Fab:

I like your voice! it's cute. So don't worry.
Avatar 1:08pm
Miss Mei:

Some of it is executive dysfunction - I put this entire show together this morning
Avatar 1:14pm
Mr Fab:

This is pretty up beat for New Age. More like low-budget '80s film soundtrack music. Even a bit porno-y.
Avatar 1:16pm
Miss Mei:

Hold on, lemme pull up info on this release...
Avatar 1:17pm
Miss Mei:

"Originally commissioned for an industrial film, this 22-minute bubbling seaside stroll was ultimately rejected by the producers. Hustling to make some cash, Steven Cooper submitted it to Valley of the Sun. Having just returned from a vacation in the Florida Keys, Dick Sutphen was more than happy to release it under a topical theme and ordered another side. The 1986 album stands as one of the more unique titles in the label’s repertoire with it’s prophetic, lo-fi synth humidity foretelling the rise of chillwave."

Mr Fab:

I can totally imagine a guy with way too much hair mousse and makeup singing over this.

I'm loving this set. It's bringing back memories of a super early morning radio program I used to listen to called The Witching Hour where this Wiccan dude would play soothing New Age-y music and occasionally read from obscure spiritual books.
  1:33pm
MHLee:

@Miss Mei I agree with Fab, I like your voice too, but if you want you can always text to speech. I've done that when live because my setup doesn't let me stream and speak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Rich in Washington:

<reading up in comments> I got to meet Dick Sutphen! When I was like ten or eleven my mom ran a bookstore, which the absentee owner slowly turned into a New Age bookstore, and they would often have in-store events with all kinds of authors.
  1:36pm
MHLee:

My other show is ambient should be my bumper sticker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Rich in Washington:

I also remember there being a spin rack with lots of cassettes like these for sale. Wouldn't be surprised if it was some of these various tapes.
  1:37pm
MHLee:

This all flows so well together
Avatar 1:40pm
Mr Fab:

is there Old Age music?

(insert Rolling Stones joke here)
  1:41pm
MHLee:

Stone Age music
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
WR:

You term these as "private press" and these are certainly not labels getting mainstream attention, but the production values in recording and cassette manufacturing appears to be tops.
Avatar 1:53pm
Miss Mei:

I suppose you're right. Only one of the tapes on here is a "True" private press release not put out on any small labels.

Tbh this is perfect music to sample for vaporwave
Avatar 2:10pm
Miss Mei:

I was in a rush getting this show together - These are not private press - just small labels with lesser known artists. I should've said rare or obscure. There is one private press recording on this show that I found at a friend's house, some new age stuff made by a social worker.
Avatar 2:11pm
Miss Mei:

(well Great American Audio wasn't really a small thing, they did music, toys and more and had 2 locations)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Rich in Washington:

I think these are great. I totally understand where they're coming from, because of my experiences growing up in a bookstore. They were like specialty press items. It's neat to hear these now, because at that age, I wasn't really curious about the cassettes or weird music in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Rich in Washington:

of course, I'm talking about '75 to around 1980, until the store in question went out of business (killed by big box retail bookstores nearby).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
MHLee:

Specialty Press
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Rich in Washington:

the store also sold role playing games, which were just about to explode on the scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
MHLee:

I know the ECK folks have some ambient meditation albums. I wonder if Transcendental Meditation or anyone in that niche have these.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember Otis playing some Eckenkar (sp?) albums, the Darwin Gross ones but they're spoken word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
MHLee:

Table rpgs have gone mainstream since I started playing them around 2006
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Rich in Washington:

There are also a number of New Age-y records around the orbit of Bagwan Shri Rashneesh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
MHLee:

@Rich I sent one to Daryll that's been described as Bing Crosby on Acid at an Ashram... there's also a jazz album out there somewhere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Rich in Washington:

There's also some Krautrock figure who's sort of marginally involved with the Rajneeshis but I cannot recall which one ATM.
I think Morgan Fisher was/is a Sanyasin but he's pretty well grounded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
MHLee:

Musical cults fascinate me. I have a bunch of recordings of Jesus Freak communes (All Saved Together Freak Band, anyone)... the Source Family etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
MHLee:

Though I've gotta to admit I'm not sure I think the Source Family particularly good. The Farm Commune however...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
Barno in Akron:

MHLee, Does your collection include the bands of Jesus People USA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
Rich in Washington:

I am sure we're all familiar with Mica's Music of Mind Control on the mothership.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
MHLee:

Those are those dudes in Chicago right? I don't know if they have a specific band in my list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Rich in Washington:

Gawd. I actually really love all this music. I need to find a 24/7 stream of it rather than what I usually (try to) sleep to: The Drone Zone on Soma FM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
Barno in Akron:

Yeah, MHLee. It's the Chicago-based commune. They were punks and rockers. Rez Band (Resurrection Band) and Crash Dog were two bands that I remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
MHLee:

You can catch my dungeonsynth show on Wednesday right after Beneath the Under Ground, Rich
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm

Wha? That's news to me! Cool!
Avatar 2:35pm

but NOT on WFMU - on MHLee's other station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
MHLee:

It's on the college station. I originally was considering bringing it over here.

Mr Fab:

remember that guy Kitaro? I had a co worker who was a collaborator with him in some way. I met him at a party at said co-workers house. I had just read an article about virtual reality, then a very new concept, and I was telling Kitaro about it. Which seemed pretty New Age.

Co-worker's family member kept calling him "Guitar-o."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Rich in Washington:

Jade Warrior was another big New Age-y group.
Avatar 2:41pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm

new age in virtual reality sounds great
Avatar 2:43pm
Mr Fab:

gawd all the mumbo-jumbo they wrote in these descriptions. e.g.: under the Awakened Dreaming tape cover. Guess they didn't want to just call it "guy noodling around on synths," eh?
Avatar 2:44pm
Miss Mei:

That's the charm of it!

A little militaristic and a little Star Trek

Much thx! Guess this really had me zoned out - can't believe it's over already.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
WR:

LOL. I thought that might happen, the high volume for ambient meditation resulted in me being startled when a post ambient track came on. What I didn't expect was that it would be a jingle for the ambient publisher, rather than whatever the Sheena stream would bring. But should have learned by now to expect the unexpected.

Thank you for another unique exploration around the edges of recorded recordings.

Laters all y'all.
