Merrily We Roll Along is a mish-mash of high energy lunacy, reverence, and irreverence for forgotten pop stars, love for Saturday morning cartoons, and exploration of the side of Bandcamp where I seem to be the only one purchasing. Bringing to you the odd and the upbeat from a growing collection of pre-rock novelties, classic and neo-Vaudeville, jug bands, polka, klezmer, and more at the convenient hour of 8-9 AM EST, Merrily We Roll Along starts the day off with a little light-hearted musical tomfoolery cut with an occasional comedy sketch. It's organic, free-range, cheese with the occasional onion thrown in.

Incidentally, Mae Questel was the second Betty but had also won a Helen Kane lookalike contest.

Mel Blanc  I Tell My Troubles to Joe   Favoriting 1952  There's a lot to digest with this song. Why is this song about drinking in a bar because you fight with your wife in Bugs Bunny's voice?

Bugs Bunny  What's Up Doc?   Favoriting 1950  Taken from an album called "Bugs Bunny on Broadway", film premiere was 1950.

Captain Paul & His Seafaring Band  I'll be Seeing You In the Movies   Favoriting 1959  “The Popeye Song Folio!” album by Captain Paul & His Seafaring Band uses songs released in 1936 under the same name but there is no Popeye preforming with Captain Paul. I believe the Billy Costello theme was included but most of the album is just Paul's Band.

Yeah, haven't seen that Terrytoon cartoon in decades. Wonder if they have any credits on the cartoon itself. Probably not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am
MHLee:

I've not watched much of the studio. I considered just doing the Merry Melodies featured songs for a couple of seasons but decided I'd try to feature more studios
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am

Sinatra doing Woody Woodpecker was atrocious, but he did worse! mam Will Bark and that awful nonsense about mip map mop, bim bam broom
👻 Swag For Life Member 8:27am
WR:

I wonder how many different people recorded the Woody Woodpecker song before 1960.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29am
MHLee:

That's a very good question. Good advertising.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am
MHLee:

Mam Will Bark is so bad
Avatar 8:30am

Must have been loads, WR: hadn't realised that the Woody Woodpecker Song was the first song from an animated short to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am
MHLee:

Interesting they gave ghosts and monsters on the most explicitly druggy songs

This Minnie the Moocher animation is so very good.

There's a great documentary, available on YOuTube, that shows how the Fleischer's copied Cab's movements for their cartoons

I also found Mel Blanc singing mockney music hall songs
👻 Swag For Life Member 8:57am
WR:

OK, Trouble to Joe is a Mel Blanc song, but not from a cartoon, makes sense. I was wondering. LOL. Funny song.

Hi DG Guin, welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am

It seems Bugs Bunny might have been a default voice for him.

DJ Guin:

my biggest issue with WB toons was the personality shift of Bugs and Daffy. Bugs with the side eye and Daffy becoming a miser. I mean. W.T actual F?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am

Daffy must lose... it's the cosmic way.
