perfect timing...with no disrespect, I will be doing my Saturday housecleaning a bit later than normal, but in sync with this tribute show to a great musician. Thanks for putting this together, Doug. He played with all the greats, so, this show is going to be awesome! RIP Grachan!!!

You will be celebrating happier birthday tidings with your massive, five-hour Anthony Braxton blow-out on this, his 77th birthday. Can't wait to hear your show beginning at 7pm (ET).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm

Funny. This trombone opening sometimes makes me think of the music in Close Encounters of the Kind when the alien ship is landing.

@Jeff g. via app OMG! 5 hours of Braxton! This is almost too much to take in on one session....the brain at some point, for those who really listen, will be exhausted....or maybe regenerated. On the other hand, even though I am a vegetarian, could Braxton's music make me crave a Big Mac?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
alanr:

I want to share a posting on Facebook from Steve Swell: "I don't know where to start. Grachan Moncur III passed away yesterday. In the 70s I went to free classes on the Upper West Side presented by Jazz Interactions where Roswell Rudd was the trombone teacher. When he couldn't make it, Grachan was his sub. What Grachan gave me is beyond what I think is even discussed these days. For an improvising trombonist he got all of us in touch and connected with a full body sense of yourself when you played. He did this by having us play tunes like Donna Lee and Confirmation (which I still practice today) in alternate positions. Which means that the same notes "normally" played on the trombone can be played further out on the slide, rather than closer, bringing more of your whole body into playing as you stretched your arm out for those positions. If I'm playing out in 5th, 6th or 7th position for a protracted period of time, you can't help but to have your entire body more engaged in your playing. I believe that this has had a real effect on how I play and improvise. I was also fortunate, thanks to William Parker, to get to perform with him a number of years later. He was also a composer that was original and prolific bridging many of the styles that were being developed early on in this music. A truly brlliant musician and composer. Rest in Peace Sir."

I have to cut out... Ill check the archive!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Doug Schulkind:

I wonder if there was anything particular Rudy Van Gelder did in his recording set-up that enhanced Moncur's sense of stature on these numbers. It sounds like he is towering above the rest of the musicians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

Peace and love to you, Will the Sound Guy. Happy travels.
  Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
WR:

@2:35 @alanr: Thank you for sharing that tribute note from Steve Swell. I was very happy to get to ser Moncur III a few times in early aughts. He was such a presence, moving everyone in the room with his playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

This audacious music was recorded in 1967 and remained in the vaults for 17 insane years before being inauspiciously released as part of a bargain two-fer. Absurd!!!!
  Swag For Life Member 2:58pm
WR:

I assume the opposite Doug. That Gelder had to struggle to balance the rest of the group with Moncur's Jubalation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm
Doug Schulkind:

@WR
You're probably right. Van Gelder felt he had to fashion a lid for the pressure cooker that was Moncur's presence in the studio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm

One thinks Fela Kuta patterned his smoky tenor sound after Archie Shepp.

I don't know how to get it right, so I'll get it wrong. I first heard of Grachan Moncur from Scott McDowell's show, specifically as as segue from Hatikvah to Hypnosis. These two are one for me. People who think that soils your heritage, I don't know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm

Right you are, fred. Scott McDowell has used "Hipnosis" as his opening theme to The Long Rally for years. Amazing piece.

That Morrissey trophy also explains why Unruly Stubble never caught up in high school. That hit too close to home, but denying it happened? If all band members agree, OK

I am still potentially on the hook for jury service. I have to be available and on-call for service over a two-week period. Have to call in Monday at 4om to find out if I am directed to serve on Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Doug Schulkind:

Charnett Moffeet succumbed to heart attack back in April at the age of 54. Moncur's cause of death was also cardiac arrest, though surely the result of a number of contributing comorbidities.
