A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm

I've got a fever and the only prescription is more Klausmeyer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Aitch:

Very under the radar over here, rarely mentioned. Underground here was more english bias for whatever reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Rich in Washington:

For those who don't know, Kitten Sparkles has been introducing us to outsider musician John Klausmeyer, whose music is somewhat reminiscent of R. Stevie Moore, The Rudy Schwartz Project, early They Might Be Giants, a less serious Residents. Just sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Rich in Washington:

and now he's unearthed him and had him as a guest on his (Kitten's) show yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Rich in Washington:

I found this CD at the Goodwill the other day and had to buy it as I am a completeist of this label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
ironybread:

@aitch It's interesting how "underground" in 1980 and 2022 mean totally different things...back in the day it meant "that one LP we're selling in the record shop on commission" whereas today it means "that one download on Bandcamp that no one's tweeted yet"

ironybread here we'd have to read about it and then order it or tape it off some other freak
Avatar 8:31pm
Mr Fab:

Aitch @8:23, Nick Cave has talked about that - they would get the Brit papers, like NME, but they didn't know much about the American underground. Maybe because the US is so spread out, with every city having it's own zine (s)? So the Birthday Party moved to UK, and were greatly disappointed to find out it was mostly like Rick Astley, etc. Then they played in LA and were like damn, we should have moved here. And stole Kid Congo Powers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
ultradamno:

Though they (Birthday Party) got shut down mid-set in NYC (of all places) first time out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well, Kid's transformation from a Cramp to A Bad Seed was a curvier road than that. He explained it to me and Chresti in our kitchen one night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
WR:

KBOO archives programs? when they get archived, how long are they available? Sure, I could go look at the web site, but come on, you're a direct source...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Rich in Washington:

I miss just reading about cool artists in magazines, zines, etc. and then it would be an eternity until you actually heard them or found their records. the ones which DIDN'T disappoint achieved a sort of personal immortality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Rich in Washington:

I think KBOO's archives are only supposed to be up for 14 days but no one there is clever enough to make them self-expire so I've seen shows of mine going back several years.
I gave up self-archiving my KBOO shows when I started doing a weekly show here.
Avatar 8:36pm
Mr Fab:

ultradamno: by the '80s, i don't think NYC went for anything that didn't come with an art gallery background at the time. that's why the Cramps moved to LA

Fanco: wish I'd been in that kitchen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Rich in Washington:

Here's my page for my KBOO show for those interested. For after the after show. Don't listen to the THEN me now.
kboo.fm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
ironybread:

I have so much music to catch up with it would take ten weeks of nonstop listening just for me to make a dent. I don't know why anyone would ever want to court me as a potential DJ to play their music, but to make me notice they'd have to mail me a package that included not just a CD of their las album but a sex toy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Rich in Washington:

The Cramps left NYC because they were tired of being ignored by NY and went to go be ignored by the West Coast music biz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
ultradamno:

You discourage listening to both shows simultaneously?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Rich in Washington:

I could play my Thursday night show on Friday night but do a commentary track over the top of it and complain about all the mistakes I made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
ultradamno:

Weren't they immediately dumped into contract hell at that point, barring them from releasing anything?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
ultradamno:

(accounting for a 81 to 83 gap)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Rich in Washington:

It was IRS, who I think were controlled by A&M, if I'm not mistaken. I remember they virtually disappeared for years until appearing on The Return of the Living Dead soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Rich in Washington:

It's weird that Ivy's sitting on a reissue and merch goldmine but seems not to be interested in pursuing any of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
ultradamno:

I always thought it was something of a crime she didn't pursue a post Cramps Link Wray-ish instrumental act
Avatar 8:45pm
Mr Fab:

I remember Ivy saying that by the '80s the NYC scene had become a bunch of artist loft conceptual types that they didn't feel they fit in with.

Rich: SOMEONE'S putting out Cramps merch. Ursula1000 said that he recently bought a Cramps tee from H&M. Hmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, it's a shame. Or at least write a book. She's a freaking genius and I'll bet it would be great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't think it's weird. i think she's too heartbroken to give a shit about money or the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I am pretty sure all those Cramps and Ivy shirts are just by opportunistic folks, as are the various bootleg comps with their name on them. As far as I know, there's no official Cramps merch and you can tell by some of the shirts, as they're usually incredibly cheesy in their execution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Rich in Washington:

No. It's not weird. I think she's doing exactly what she wants to do and that's awesome.

stairs are overrated

There's a gravity shortage, don't you know. Stay downstairs as much as possible.

My thanks to Kleo Records for their reminder that only musclebound cartoon dogs can defeat tyranny of a musical staff.

Hi Rich and Diggahz . .. just now tuning in and will have to stream earlier tracks later this weekend. I've been pulling ticks off myself all evening. Better than leeches, I suppose. One time I was out in the woods and put a cap on . . . some huge insect inside of it tried to drill into the top of my head. This was in Georgia. A scary place where the trees have teeth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
ironybread:

Squish a tick's head for me, Zip.

Oh, that's awful, zipperhead7!

How I haven't seen the spiral escalator in a movie yet (some guy with no time to waste leaping from one side to another) is amazing

I think escalators are an invention of the devil. I say deescalation now!

Nasty little buggers . . . almost as nasty as the three rubber fetuses my dingbat aunt gave my mother on their way to terrify women in front of Planned Parenthood. I found them when moving my mother into a rest home and threw them away, but christened them Huey, Dewey and Louie first. Although they were rubber, they were accorded human form and deserved respect

dab a little bit of metholated spirits on the tick and they pull themselves out, not enough to kill them though

That is a terrifying flasher on that cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Rich in Washington:

my favorite escalator story - and decades before the Mitch Hedberg joke - myself and some friends were wandering around the mall and riding the escalator when it inexplicably stopped. All the adults stood there blinking at one another for several seconds. I yelled at them 'YOU CAN JUST USE THEM LIKE STAIRS NOW' and they sorta jerked into action. That's when I realized that adults weren't very smart.

This place I went to see movies had escalators and they never worked. So, stairs.

It's crazy how tame this poor hating rap is though now. There was a politician not that long ago that compared aid to feeding stray animals because then they'll just be healthy enough to breed.

This from Wikipedia: "When Peter Boyle saw audience members cheering the violence in Joe, he refused to appear in any other film or television show that glorified violence."
