Yes, I was at the Bovine from...1998 to about 2004? I have a regular monthly at the Piston now...and we are well, we're streaming live now instead at the moment. Christ I miss a good dance party too

yeah, Montreal is the same. and I work for a venue now-- whoops.

A part of why I moved was it was hard to see everything closing in every neighbourhood and starting to get replaced with Rexall and A&W and Dollarama lol. But now when I go back it's even worse. I miss the food soooooooo much, and I guess I miss stuff that doesn't exist anymore? Hopefully things will turn around... and every city will realize they need good bars and venues to have any kind of culture to speak of.

Rocket Tits sounds awesome. do you still have anything up on the ole web?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Derek Westerholm:

I still love Toronto. Though it's true it's got a shitty corporate vibe about it that's only gotten shittier over the years. Bad for fostering art, unless art is "Drake". (Or at the Drake.) But there's still lots of turnover and people doing super cool down-to-earth things. One of my favourite off-the-grid bookers is Tad, who books in alternate venues/non-venues, esp. his series "Feast In The East", where if you show up early enough to the show, for no extra cost, a rotating roster of indie artists cook you up a delicious vegan meal at no extra cost. Fucked-Up's "Long Winter" series has also become an amazing mainstay. But yeah, big city art is definitely getting polluted by corporate mentalities. Some cool things will definitely survive, and ppl doing interesting things will always find a way to make them happen in inspiring ways in approachable venues somewhere.

" Feels like Canada suffers from a massive identity crisis when it comes to art" I read an article by a Canadian writer called something "Canadian Music Is Boring" based on that concept, that Canadians haven't invented anything, they take from the US or the UK. Avatar 🍒 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. That team of Sim and Gerhard was pretty great, and I'd say the first half of Cerebus is great. But then you get to a certain story... and it starts to fall apart. The art remains great... but hardly enough for me to keep slogging through the misogyny.

scabrielle:

so like, when I was 20 I was really obsessed with this band called The Deadly Snakes, and I would have said that was an ok snapshot into "Toronto Sound" circa the 2000s when it comes to... kind of... indie rock I guess, it takes me right right back to Toronto every time I listen to it.

scabrielle:

and then this band Hooded Fang put out a really great record in 2009 or something that also makes me t hink "Toronto Indie Rock", buttt Metric and Crystal Castles and Fucked Up are all also very different examples too?

again, most of the bands I listen to now are stupid hardcore bands, so S.H.I.T is a good example of that... but like Orville Peck is from Toronto haha.

It's kind of all over the place, and I would say is not so distinct from "American"... as in... North America.
  7:46pm
Andres:

Mr. Fab, that sounds like a bunch of crap from some self loathing jerk. There are wildly unique sounds oozing from every ‘burg major and minor, suburb and rural territory across Canada. To reduce any city’s or country’s music to one sound would be foolish. WFMU and it’s streams are often me surprising me with CanCon old and new. Tune into a Canadian community station and you’ll find tons of great Canadian music beyond our Top 40 pop exports.

I'm with you, Sarcofiguy: I might like some of Miller's work, and I might like some of Moore's work, but I think neither would be fun to meet.

(In case it hasn't already come through in the photos of the Lava Lamp Lounge: I have far too many comics and 'zines, and that's probably not going to change any time soon.)

AUSTIN: I despise myself for how much stuff I've collected comic and book wise. I HATE MYSELF! Hah!

Mr Fab:

Yeah Austin, probably a lot of music is Canadian, but you didn't know it. I'm always finding that out about all the Dutch music that Jan plays. Had no idea I was so familiar with so much music from the Netherlands. They give themselves Anglo-Anerican names, singing English.

Andres: Both Otis Fodder and Derek n Bab's shows here on Sheena's are def hipping the world to the great Canadian music out there.

I would that Quebecois could be considered uniquely Canadian. It's sung in French, but often doesn't always really have a French-music feel.

Every time I think to myself, "That sounded like some classic 80s that was pretty good," it's inevitably The The.

Been listening in the backdrop on deadlines. Good book I recommend on the Toronto punk sound late 70s/early 80s is 'Treat Me Like Dirt' by Liz Worth. Sounding grand DJ.SL!

Mets-en! Music in Montreal is ever morphing and we have some damn fine record shops for digging, loads of Can Con treasure here.

that's true but you can't count Quebec in anything Canadian. also most of the Queeb bands I listen to are still punk so it's all the same to me.

I have not heard of this book Otis, but I will definitley be checking it out! Oh you're also Montreal???

Probably the most money I ever spent on seeing a performance was Tom Waits.
