Japanese Music Special including an interview with
Celebrate Golden Week in Japan with our approximately annual Japanese Music Special. Japanese roots and neotraditional music, world music and ethno-grooviness, enka, quirky pop, etc. Special focus on the islands south and north‚ Okinawa and Hokkaido, including an interview with the innovative Ainu (northern indigenous) musician/producer Oki Kano in the last half-hour.
Oki Kano homepage / song clips at http://www.tonkori.com; info in English and cds at http://www.farsidemusic.com/acatalog/OKI.html .
Farside music is an excellent English-language source for exploring (and acquiring) Japanese and Okinawan roots and world music and for East Asian music in general. Great capsule descriptions of the cds by proprietor (and Resonance FM, London dj) Paul Fisher. http://www.farsidemusic.com/
Other online sources we came upon while researching this show: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ and http://us.yesasia.com/en/Japanese/Music.aspx
Our favorite Japanese cd (and book) shopping outlet in NYC is Book-Off at 14 E41 St. The shop's large and varied selection of used Japanese cds includes a good deal of indie-label material not found at the few other Japanese cd shops in the NYC area. Click here for a blurb.
