I may have heard Greg Tate when he was on the air at the Pacifica station in D.C., WPFW, which I listened to fairly constantly during my last two years of high school. If I did, I don't remember hearing specifically him. My radio hero on WFPW was Jimmy Gray, whose radio show was Black Fire. @Jeff J, My feelings are pretty mixed. He did his best to be honest, but there is a negative tone to almost all of his experiences, and it's hard to tell how much is him and how much is in fact the reality of the music business, the movie business, the art business, NYC in the pre-Giuliani days, etc. Sometimes he recognizes that he only has his own perspective and memories, but sometimes not.
It's all very vivid and easy to read, though.

@Jeff J, a lot of people in the arts operated on no money and so lied and cut corners a lot to get their products done (or their club open or their art sold, etc.). To be fair, Lurie freely admits to his own shenanigans (or some of them).

Of course, Tate was most articulate about the value of HipHop (truly it was giving voice to realities nearly nothing else was), & the resistance to it - & in terms of PE, the shortsightedness of some of it. Interesting with homophobia for instance - I think parallel to Guns&Roses in Rawk - on the street level one has to be wary of unwelcome advances - issues of consent & of Class - while as mass media messengers be aware also of bigotry. Things I can relate to from both sides. Perhaps we have advanced there one hopes...

Avatar 11:39am
Jeff J:

Tate on "He Loved Him Madly":

"A wake held in honor of Ellington, ambient music for the hereafter. Its colors, moods, and textures derive from Tibet, India, Micronesia, and Memphis. The three guitars favor sitars and soul band strokes; Miles' organ smears remind one of Tibetan harmonium voicings, while Henderson's bass sinks to lows as gut-plummeting as those in gamelan music. Across this aural sarcophagus, Miles' horn sobs and hobbles like a bereaved widown in a shroud. Beyond mourning Duke, the piece seems to suffer more from wanting to join him in the afterlife."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
Jeff Golick:

Beautiful. (Duke Ellington had passed away the month prior to this recording in June 1974.)

Seems to me that a primary value of Music is that it is *not* speech. It is from other lobes of the brain. Since, however, Homo sapiens is as inherently Verbal as we are Musical, it becomes sometimes necessary to articulate about it.

...so it's a startling & actually integrative thing for someone to really be able to do that ...when Music is so immediate & immersive - & so powerful without one even catching the number of the vehicle that ran us over...

Back from shopping errands. Looking at the playlist to review what I've been listening to. Some old favorites, some new to me, particularly Burnt Sugar, which seems to be at the center of the focus of today's episode. Many thanks.

Will still be listening but not back on the screen for an hour or two. And then I will have all the reading from the links y'all shared to catch up on.

Laters all. Onward.

@TDK60: I'll second that emotion. Somehow, thinking of Greg Tate in putting together today's playlist is quite a proper eulogy and a sendoff for Greg's transition. Many thanks for sharing with all of us, Jeff
