	♥ 5:10pm WR: Thanks for the Everly Brothers feature today. When I started working in a record store in 1970 my manager told me that as long as the Everlys are making records he will be in the business. This is the same guy who turned me on to The Stooges and Albert Ayler.

	☀ 5:25pm mce1965: My mom was an Everlys freak and had every album up through Instant Party so they were as important to me as the Beatles. However, I was very confused as a kid by what happened after A Date With... : "Why are they singing 'My Mammy' and 'Jezebel'?"

	5:34pm Joe B: I had the opposite of gateway with this material - I knew the hit era quite well as a kid because my mom was a fan but did not discover the great mid to late 60s stuff until the early 90s

	☀ 5:36pm mce1965: There were a couple of Ace compilations, "Hidden Gems" in the late '80s that were totally mindblowing - I couldn't believe I'd gone all my life without hearing this stuff

	5:36pm cometothesunshine: Someone wrote me a letter after the 1994 Heartaches & Harmonies Rhino box set I was a compiler & producer on. They complained I included too much of the Everly Brothers mid-60s screaming. I felt there wasn't enough!
	5:36pm Greg McGarvey: I caught the obsession from my Dad, who ultimately took me to see them almost every year of my childhood. I read the news about Don just as I’d left a gig of my own, feeling dazed and confused by the words on my screen… but eventually I realized that the two-part harmony that my partner and I brought to our stage is about as good a tribute we could have paid to the guy. We learned it from him and Phil.

	5:38pm Joe B: The Rhino box was a game changer for me! A friend who was a jimmy page freak had turned me on to the couple songs he plays on on Two Yanks ... then the Rhino box ... I could not believe that they had all this great (relatively) obscure stuff for such a famous act

	5:43pm uptown jen: One of my favorite concert experiences ever is seeing the Everlys as the special guests of Simon and Garfunkel and not knowing they were there! I went with my dad, and we were both floored and thrilled. Both duos were in fine form.

There is a smaller room outside the main studio where I was told Songs Our Daddy Taught Us was recorded. It’s really too much to take in when I’m there - this stuff got under my skin as a little kid and it continues to move me like religion might move others.

	7:15pm Greg McGarvey: It makes my head explode when Don says (BBC 1984 doc maybe) that they never did anything in the studio in the late ‘60s that “mattered.” But with the Heartaches & Harmonies box set (and that 2-CD Walk Right Back collection before it), some of their “failed” singles got the second chance they deserved. I’m glad they got to see that happen.

	7:19pm johnyoung1234: It's amazing how tight their harmonies are. Their timing and cadence (pardon the pun) are spot on.

	7:23pm Greg McGarvey: I feel that, if a person who’d somehow never even heard the hits was given the Heartaches & Harmonies box set, they would have no idea which era had the most hit singles. Their voices are just so rich by the mid-to-late ‘60s and the songs and arrangements are so interesting. I even spin Pass The Chicken about as often as It’s Everly Time or other early classics.

	☀ ♥ 7:25pm Matt Clarke: @Greg McGarvey: I was definitely shocked having started listening to them in the 2Ks. Their 50s songs weren't even on the radio anymore that I can remember, so it was a treasure trove exploring their catalogue.

	7:28pm Greg McGarvey: That’s awesome Matt. I was born in 1983 so my situation was similar. I was hearing the 1963 Great Country Hits LP (with those amazing Glen Campbell leads) as much as any of the hits.

	7:31pm cometothesunshine: I learned a lot about folk, country and early rock from the Everlys in the late 1980s and 1990's. People like Elvis Costello was covering their songs live and I got a job at Warner Bros. where they had all of their deleted albums. I started listening to everyone and then finding the singles.
	7:31pm johnyoung1234: I'm sure we are sticking to early stuff but if you haven't heard "On The Wings of A Nightingale" (written by Paul McCartney) or "The Story Of Me" (written by Jeff Lynne) from EB'84 you need to. Both are amazing.
	♥ 7:33pm Eric R: speaking of Beatles, there's a thing Phil did where he'd have a harmony note at the end of the song, then instead of repeating that note on the same phrase would go up. Paul would do that, like in It Won't Be Long. I'm sure he got it from Phil.
	7:33pm cometothesunshine: I was not opposed to including the solo work or 80s stuff on today's show. The playlist was really just my emotional response to Don's passing. It just ended up as this and I feel it is a good exploration and different than my earlier show from years back.

	7:43pm Greg McGarvey: For my own listening at home, I’ve tied together all the Cadence outtakes from the ~5 CDs that have come out. Little bit of crossfading and whatnot. To hear it in order is really thrilling (if a little tiring for my girlfriend). The failures are way more beautiful than what most of us could come up on our best days. Some bits surpass the released recordings - the end of “Oh, So Many Years” where they do that extra Olympian harmony hurdle at the end… gives me chills every time.

	5:36pm cometothesunshine: Someone wrote me a letter after the 1994 Heartaches & Harmonies Rhino box set I was a compiler & producer on. They complained I included too much of the Everly Brothers mid-60s screaming. I felt there wasn't enough!
	5:36pm Greg McGarvey: I caught the obsession from my Dad, who ultimately took me to see them almost every year of my childhood. I read the news about Don just as I’d left a gig of my own, feeling dazed and confused by the words on my screen… but eventually I realized that the two-part harmony that my partner and I brought to our stage is about as good a tribute we could have paid to the guy. We learned it from him and Phil.

	5:38pm Joe B: The Rhino box was a game changer for me! A friend who was a jimmy page freak had turned me on to the couple songs he plays on on Two Yanks ... then the Rhino box ... I could not believe that they had all this great (relatively) obscure stuff for such a famous act

	7:15pm Greg McGarvey: It makes my head explode when Don says (BBC 1984 doc maybe) that they never did anything in the studio in the late ‘60s that “mattered.” But with the Heartaches & Harmonies box set (and that 2-CD Walk Right Back collection before it), some of their “failed” singles got the second chance they deserved. I’m glad they got to see that happen.

Their voices are just so rich by the mid-to-late ‘60s and the songs and arrangements are so interesting. I even spin Pass The Chicken about as often as It’s Everly Time or other early classics.

	7:28pm Greg McGarvey: That’s awesome Matt. I was born in 1983 so my situation was similar. I was hearing the 1963 Great Country Hits LP (with those amazing Glen Campbell leads) as much as any of the hits.

People like Elvis Costello was covering their songs live and I got a job at Warner Bros. where they had all of their deleted albums. I started listening to everyone and then finding the singles.

	7:43pm Greg McGarvey: For my own listening at home, I’ve tied together all the Cadence outtakes from the ~5 CDs that have come out. Little bit of crossfading and whatnot. To hear it in order is really thrilling (if a little tiring for my girlfriend). The failures are way more beautiful than what most of us could come up on our best days. Some bits surpass the released recordings - the end of “Oh, So Many Years” where they do that extra Olympian harmony hurdle at the end… gives me chills every time.
