Telling me to turn it off is a daily occurrence at home (my older daughter even started posting videos, "Why does my dad listen to this stuff?", which is usually the sounds of WFMU).
  10:41am

I can't remember whose show it was in the middle of the day, but someone in the mid-1980s played stuff that repeatedly got my lab's boss to yell, "Turn that shit off!" I think it was on Tuesdays.

I first heard WFMU as a teen in 1967 or '68. It was immediately enticing! Who was on the turntable? Sorry, too long ago to recall! (Moby Grape?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Webhamster Henry:

I was already hooked on the very very few freeform shows on WBAI (Peter Bochan, Citizen Kafka, ...). So finding a station that ran freeform 24/7 - and only did on air fundraising once a year - made FMU an obvious choice.
The pre internet WFMU was very very hard to get on the radio: every morning was a "signal hunt" walking around the office with a portable radio. I'm sure there are people who objected to this practice. Eventually we found a WFMU hotspot, stuck a radio there and piped the headphone signal though an idle 10-base-T wall line.

Hey rustypepin, great to have you!!

Ach! A little research online satisfies me that at the time period in question, it COULD NOT HAVE BEEN Mr. Gottschalk's program that I was thinking of. I VERY EASILY transpose in my memory the output of one WFMU on-mic person to another.

TDK60-guitar (he's a wild man).
Spinning Giant-it's done with affection, she's pretty open to different sounds (though I took her to see Sex Mob once, they had Nels Cline and John Medeski as guests. They followed Nels, who skronked out a very dissonant course, and she didn't enjoy it. I four a chance to catchy Sec Mob at an outdoor concert this summer, with Medeski, no Nels, and they ROCKED. We all loved it!)

Actually in all walks of life I have trouble keeping one person straight from another, but when the way I know of them is sound from a box, I'm nearly hopeless at keeping them straight.

Thanks doc. || I like that your background "beds" change. Some WFMU DJs' beds or theme songs do get old for me. (Minor qualm.)

@DoctorJ, I feel that your family is better for hearing Nels Cline even if they didn't appreciate him. Now they know that such sounds are part of the human expression.

My wife is particularly indulgent-she's accompanied me to shows she barely tolerated (BassDrumBone in Manhattan being a recent one-it was a small Museum in NYC, 2 rows of fold out chairs, she couldn't even read).
